There is mercy for a sinner, but there is no mercy for the man who will not own himself a sinner

Charles Spurgeon
to become the recipient of leniency
‘Grace is especially associated with men in their sins; mercy is especially associated with men in their misery.’ In other words, while grace looks down upon sin as a whole, mercy looks especially upon the miserable consequences of sin. So that mercy really means a sense of pity plus a desire to relieve the suffering. That is the essential meaning of being merciful; it is pity plus the action.
Lloyd-Jones, D. Martyn. 1976. Studies in the Sermon on the Mount. Second edition. England: Inter-Varsity Press.

Pure in Heart

pure- free of guilt or sin
heart- conscious, thoughts, emotions
How?
Acts 15:9 ESV
9 and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.
1 John 1:7–9 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
see God
John 1:18 ESV
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
Revelation 22:1–5 ESV
1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. 4 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. 5 And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Peacemakers

a mediator who tries to bring about harmonious relations
2 Corinthians 5:17–21 ESV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
1 Timothy 2:5–6 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
exhibiting a glorious characteristic of their Father who is in heaven, who works out peace, who sends the Prince of Peace
This is the Gospel, only possible if God is a peacemaker
At least four things characterize a peacemaker. First, he is one who himself has made peace with God.
John F. MacArthur
Second, a peacemaker leads others to make peace with God
Third, a peacemaker helps others make peace with others.
John F. MacArthur
Fourth, a peacemaker endeavors to find a point of agreement.
John F. MacArthur
sons
Romans 8:14–17 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
“sons”
those who have inheritance rights as God’s children. a legal term that uses the masculine but encompasses the feminine.
Romans 5:1 ESV
1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 John 3 ESV
3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.
