Title:  DO YOU WANT TO BE HOLY?

Text:  Hebrews 12:14

Introduction:

Roland, is this your elite group?  Is this the best of the best?                   We’ll see.  It will only take me one question to find out.                    Do you really want to be holy?  I mean, be like Jesus!

If you’re really honest about that question, you probably have mixed feelings about how to answer it.  We all want to be holy…but at what cost are you willing to obtain it?!

The idea of being holy is so distant from where we actually live, isn’t it?  The present reality is that you rarely run into anyone who really desires to be holy.  I want to talk about the desire to be holy, because if you haven’t discovered it yet, you soon will, and that’s the fact that it’s impossible to be holy on your own.  Our culture is so “me-centered” and even in our churches people are showing up wanting a cheap religion…because they don’t desire the real thing that’s costly.  They want to go on the fun men’s outings and play softball without having to sacrifice.

Is holiness a big deal?  How about if I show you a verse that says it is?  Read Text.

How do you know if you really have the desire to be holy?  Let’s discuss some questions:

1.      Do you embrace in your heart only the tings that the Lord can co-inhabit with?

2.      Do you always tell the truth with no shading?

3.      Do you treat people of the opposite sex with purity?

4.      Is your reputation one of integrity with everyone that knows you?

5.      How will strangers you meet know you are holy?

Without a real desire to be pure in your heart, you have as much a chance of being holy as you would working in a coal mine with white coveralls and come out with them clean!  If you don’t hunger and thirst for righteousness, you will never experience it!

Let’s see what the Scriptures have to say about holiness.

Rom. 12:1-2

Eph. 1:3-4

Col. 1:21-23

1 Pet. 1:14-16

If you are having trouble with your personal holiness, I suggest you need a trip into the fire!  Fire removes impurities.

Mal. 3:1-3

1 Cor. 3:12-16

1 Pet. 1:6-7

Lk. 12:49-50

I’m going to read you the words of a song.  I’d like to ask you to listen to them with your heart.  I’d suggest that as you listen that you ask the Lord to use it to create a hunger for true holiness.  (Read “Refiner’s Fire”)

            Conclusion:

Now, before we leave this sacred moment…before power of God’s Holy Word blows you away…before you despair about your own ungodliness…I want to close with a couple of passages that give us tremendous hope.

Eph. 5:25-27  “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her; that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word, that He might present to Himself church in all her glory, having NO spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be HOLY and BLAMELESS.

Rev. 22:11-12  “Let the one who is righteous, still practice righteousness; and let the one who is holy, still keep himself holy.  Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me.”

Sing - “Refiner’s Fire”  &  “Give Me Jesus”

REFINER’S FIRE

“There burns a fire with sacred heat,

White hot with holy flame.

And all who dare to pass through its blaze

Will not emerge the same.

Some as bronze, and some as silver;

Some as gold with great skill.

All are hammered by their sufferings

On the anvil of His will.

I’m learning now to trust His touch,

To brave the fire’s embrace.

For though my past with sin was etched,

His mercy did erase.

Each time His purging cleanses deeper,

I’m not sure that I’ll survive.

Yet the strength in growing deeper

Leaves my hungry soul alive.

The Refiner’s fire has now become my sole desire.

Purge and cleanse and purify

 That the Lord be glorified.

He is consuming my soul

 Refining me, making me whole.

No matter what I may loose,

I choose the Refiner’s fire.”
