A Way Forward (Chapter 6)

Repeat this… “We Are They”
is a proverb that challenges the hearer to stop looking to others to solve their problems, saying, “They ought to make children's books that more accurately depict the skin color of Biblical characters. or “they should offer more courses on early African Christianity in universities and seminaries. This proverb forces you to look at “they” differently. They isn’t is who most think. This proverb isn't so focused on THEY but YOU! They in the proverb is US and we should create the change.
The majority of what we have or have been able to experience in the past and present is birth from rejection.
Black funded banks were created because of the rejection of white owned banks.
HCBUs were created because universities rejected and refused to educate blacks.
The black church built fellowship halls , because they had no venues to host weddings and parties.
The black church was birth due to rejection from the white so called Christians.
The point is that the no’s and rejections you may face, concerning needs that others ignore or belittle is your opportunity to create the change that is needed.
We cant wait for others to admit there wrong doings before we make a move. Church cant wait for sinners to repent, Blacks cant wait for the 40 acres and a mule,
For your idea to become a reality, you must take the initiative.
I want you to explore these 4 Initiatives and consider how God is calling you to be the “they” in your community.
These 4 things is a guide to help prepare you to be a bridge for the others wrestling with the question “Is Chritianity a White Man Religon”
ACDE
A - Advocate for the RIghts of the Opressed
“We always see oursleves in need of being delivered. But we should also see oursleves as ones who deliver. Dr.Day
Luke 4:18–19 ESV
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus valued the ignored, and spoke for those who couldnt speak for themselves. Everything was done on the behalf of others.
WHen you look at your local community, what burdens or frustrates you the most? What have you been pointing at and saying they should do something about???
How can you make a change?
If its nothing you arent looking and if you arent looking that may suggest you really dont care.
When our faith lacks the work of advocacy for the oppressed, people are left questioning God’s goodness, commitment to justice, and love for all.
James 2:14–17 ESV
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
The Church is Mobile not Stationary
People, not a Place.
C - Create God-Glorifying Work
“The way to right the wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them” Ida B Wells
Ask yourself this question.... Whats in your hands? What gift, what ability, and what experiences has God blessed you with?
Ida B Wells used her pen. She was already running a newspaper office. So she wrote about lynching, "Southern Horrors: Lynching in All Its Phases. She wrote that lynching was an excuse to get rid of negros who were buying land and building wealth. She used you God given gift to create God-glorifying work. You may heard of another thing she created.... NAACP.
God gifted you with the ability to mobilize a community. When that gift is dormant, it paralyzes the community.
Make a list of the gifts , ablilites, and experiences God has given you.
How might you these gifts to create God-glorifying work in the world?
E - Educate Yourself
“To seek for Oursleves” AME CHurch Proverb
One of the reasons I wanted to do Sat school now Monday school was to touch on subjects that are contrvesrial, topics that you wont always get in our sunday school books, that will make us SEEK.. Dig deeper. I have lost battles to contend because I didnt educate myself on things so that I can have a legit biblical answer. I didnt always have an answer as to why slavery was in the bible, didnt always have an answer was this a white man religion, didnt always have an answer to many other touchy toipcs. That drove me to seek search and dig. Before I can educate others there must be some private study time to learn and grow.
Concerning this book, what are some things you would like to learn more about?
Concerning the bible what are somethings you want to learn more about?
Will you challenge yourself to buy and read more books this year?
D- Disciple Others
“A part of making disciples is to contend for the faith” - Chris Broussard
We are to love God and Neighbor.
One of the ways to show that love is by making disciples. Doing this expresses love toward God and our neighbors. Toward God in our obedience, and towards man by sharing this lovely gospel.
Name one or two who are on the fence about christianity.
