Renew

Romans 12:2 (NIV84)
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...
4 Quick Observations:
Society’s standards have degraded even more than when I was a youth pastor 20 years ago.
comments from current college students about whether there is absolute truth or not.
everyone has their own opinion and so that is their truth.
The world feels more broken than it was 20 years ago.
The necessity to renew our minds with the truth is even more important now than ever.
The Gospel applies now just as much as it did 20 years ago.
Bring Kids Up To Share:

Truth Defined:

Truth is: A Verified or Indisputable Fact
(verified) Come into agreement with a standard pattern or rule - REPEATABLE
(indisputable) Does not change - UNIVERSAL
(fact) To be exact, correct and accurate - ACCURATELY REFLECT REALITY
Truth must then be derived from a source outside of oneself. OBJECTIVE
Claims about the external world independent of what one believes or feels about it.
2 Corinthians 10:12 NASB95
For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.

Worldview Defined:

It is the lens through which one sees the world.
Our worldview touches every crevice of our existence.
It seeks to give us an intellectual framework through which we can interpret life, see meaning in it, and what we then can expect from it.
This is what we believe about reality.
Problems:
You can have your own beliefs, but you can’t have your own truth.
Not Necessarily Based On Truth. Dependent on the internal opinion of the individual.
Personal and private claims of preference.
SUBJECTIVE. How we feel about an object.
You cannot have opposing worldviews and both be TRUE.
Ultimately There are Only 2 Worldviews.
God’s which is based on truth.
John 17:17 NASB95
“Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
John 14:6 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
1 John 5:6 NASB95
This is the One who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not with the water only, but with the water and with the blood. It is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.
John 16:13 NASB95
“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
John 8:32 NASB95
and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
Satan’s which is based on a lie
John 8:44 NASB95
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 8:44 - Greek word holding means - stands not or continues not in the truth
Question: Do we adjust the truth to fit our worldview? Or do we allow the truth to shape our worldview?
Our responsibility is to learn the truth and then submit to truth and adjust our decisions and behaviors to line up with the truth. Sanctification…Renewing our mind...
Romans 12:2 NIV84
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Do not act to please this world, but let God transform and renew your mind so that you act to please Him. When you do His will you discover that His will is good, satisfying and perfect.

Our Behavior and Our Decisions Will Expose Our Worldview.

A. Jesus – Right worldview
1. Unashamed - I have spoken openly…I said nothing in secret…Ask those who heard me…They know what I said.
2. Confident - If I said something wrong, testify as to what was wrong (false). But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?
3. Knew where He came From: My Kingdom is not of this world.
4. Knew who’s got His back: If it were, my servants would be fighting for me.
5. Knew who He was: I am a King
6. Knew His Purpose: For this reason I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth.
7. Knew the Result: Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.
What part did Christ’s knowledge play in His worldview?
B. Pilate – Wrong worldview
He knew something was wrong: It was because of envy they had handed him over. (Mark 15:10)
Mark 15:10 NASB95
For he was aware that the chief priests had handed Him over because of envy.
Asked the right questions, he sought the Truth:
Are you the King of the Jews?
What have you done?
What is Truth?
Wanted to do what was right; release Jesus 3x
Luke 23:16–18 NASB95
“Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.” Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner. But they cried out all together, saying, “Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!”
Luke 23:20–22 NASB95
Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, but they kept on calling out, saying, “Crucify, crucify Him!” And he said to them the third time, “Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”
Ultimately, followed his worldview
Washed his hands.
Matthew 27:24 NASB95
When Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.”
Their voices began to prevail
Luke 23:23–24 NASB95
But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail. And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted.
Wanting to satisfy the crowd
Mark 15:15 NASB95
Wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Questions:
In the end did his current knowledge matter?
Did asking the right questions (seeking truth) matter?
Did his desire (passion) to do what was right matter?
We need to renew our mind with a knowledge of the truth.
Hosea 4:6 NASB95
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.
Romans 10:1–3 NASB95
Brethren, my heart’s desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
C. Peter – Conflicted worldviews
Garden - Willing to fight. Easy
Fire - Not willing to stand up. Hard. (Matthew 26:69-75).
Denied it
Denied it with an oath
Began to curse and swear
In the Garden Jesus was there.
What about in the fire? The Lord turned and looked at Peter
Luke 22:61 NASB95
The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”
He went out and wept bitterly.
We may embrace a godly, biblical worldview and not be consistent with it.
Spiritual Growth and maturity, consistency, not perfection.
