It is a pastors Job to correct those who are erring by the Word of God, and they are to do so out of love not malice.
Paul has given some hard correction to those in Galatia and today we will see his heart behind it.
Exalting Jesus in Galatians Free to Grow (Galatians 4:8–31)

Paul gives us some of the strongest words of personal affection that we see anywhere in his writings. Luther said that these words “breathe Paul’s own tears” (Luther, Lectures on Galatians, 27:299).

Main Idea: Pauls pastoral desires for the church in Galatia are my pastoral desires for you. This can be summed up in a three part prayer.
PRAYER
A - Dearest Lord Jesus we are amazed by you. Thank you for coming to and for us in the flesh and even now through your Spirit. Father we praise you this day.
C - We confess to you that we are weak and sinful. We need you to bear with us. We need you to change and grow us for in ourselves we often turn aside to earthly things.
T - Thank you Father that you never leave nor forsake us, that you who have begun a good work in us will bring it to completion. Thank you that you have sent your son to dwell among mortal men and to suffer the death that we deserved so that He might give the life which He earned to us.
S - Show us how to live Lord Jesus. Help us to hear your word and apply it even when it is hard to hear and hard to apply. Make yourself known though us. Conform us to your image and give us the gift of being used by you to see others transformed for your glory.
Paul’s prayer for the Galatians, for us...

Show them how to walk by grace

[Gal 4:8-11, 21-31]
How we got here
Paul goes all the way back to Gen 16-17 = Abraham / Sarah / Hagar
Abraham / Sarah’s plan - Hagar / Ishmael = slaves
God’s Plan - Isaac = born of promise
Exalting Jesus in Galatians Show Us How We Got Here

We do not become children of God by the law, by the old covenant, but by the promise of God, by the new covenant. To put it another way, we are not saved by obedience to the law, but by faith in the promise of God.

Old Cov. = Keep the Law
Galatians 4:28 ESV
28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise.
Ishmael = according to flesh /// Isaac = according to supernatural intervention !!
Gal 3.2 “2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?”
That is where we came from who are we now?
Who we are
no longer slaves !!
Galatians 4:30 ESV
30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.”
V8 = slaves to those things that are not gods = false gods / demons = pagans
V9 = turning back to slavery
V10 = days, months, seasons = jewish religiosity
just as pagan as before !! = amazing !!
Exalting Jesus in Galatians Show Us Who We Are

if you go to church, sing songs, and study the Word, thinking this is how you’re going to work to earn God’s favor, then you are no different from the over one billion Hindus in the world today who are bowing down to their gods. If your Christianity is a check-off box in order to make you feel good about yourself before God, in order to save your skin on the day of judgment, then your Christianity is no different from every other religion in the world, and ultimately it will condemn you. Paul is uncovering a scheme of the Devil in the first century that continues in the twenty-first century. It is subtly and dangerously deceiving. What if Satan’s strategy to condemn your soul involves not tempting you to do all the wrong things, but instead leading you to do all the right things with the wrong spirit?

What if Satan wants you to try and work your way to God ??
Instead of growing in Christian liberty they have slipped back into bondage.
The Message of Galatians 3. The Appeal of the Apostle (Verses 8–11)

Oh, the folly of these Galatians! We can certainly understand the language of the Prodigal Son, who came to his father and said ‘I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired servants’ or ‘slaves’. But how can anyone be so foolish as to say: ‘You have made me your son; but I would rather be a slave’? It is one thing to say ‘I do not deserve it’; it is quite another to say ‘I do not desire it; I prefer slavery to sonship’. Yet that was the folly of the Galatians, under the influence of their false teachers.

Jhn 8.36 “36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
So we have seen where we came from who we are and now,
Where we are going
Galatians 4:25–26 ESV
25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
We are destined for a heavenly home!! = Jerusalem Above !
we are no longer to live for the slavish earthy pleasures but for those in our heavenly home
Many of us need help here… myself included!!
The Message of Galatians b. How to Live the Christian Life

By the grace of God we must determine to remember what once we were and never to return to it; to remember what God has made us and to conform our lives to it

John Newton = 11 - went to sea = involved in the slave trade… @ 21 - March 10, 1748 - converted… REMEMBER Deut 15.15 “15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this today.”
The Message of Galatians b. How to Live the Christian Life

The way for us to avoid the Galatians’ folly is to heed Paul’s words. Let God’s Word keep telling us who and what we are if we are Christians.

Paul’s prayer is - Show them how to walk by grace, ...

Help them to trust in your word

8-11 & 21-31 = bookends… middle?
[Gal 4:12-16]
V12 = Paul became like gentile to lead gentile to christ… become like me, free!
1 Cor 9.20-22 “20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.”
The Message of Galatians a. Become like Me

All Christians should be able to say something like this, especially to unbelievers, namely that we are so satisfied with Jesus Christ, with His freedom, joy and salvation, that we want other people to become like us.

V13-15 = how he met them… bad sickness… a burden/trial… how they accepted him (ANGEL)
V15 = what has happened to your blessedness?
Galatians 4:16 ESV
16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?
Help us to hear it
Exalting Jesus in Galatians Help Us to Hear It When It’s Not Popular

He has said some hard things to the Galatians, not because he hates them, but because he loves them.

The truth is not our enemy
The truth may hurt, but it also saves
The truth is, not everyone wants to hear it !!
Popular or Faithful ??
Not only do we need God to help us to hear the truth when it’s not popular, but we also need God to help us to live it when it’s not easy.
Help us to live it
Paul’s trials remind us that it’s not easy...
Look how Paul lives for Christ
Galatians 4:29 ESV
29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
Early church persecution… Jesus predicts persecution… are you willing to accept persecution??
labeled a fanatic… even by those in the “church”?
Paul’s prayer is - Show them how to walk by grace, Help them to trust in your Word, and ...

Give them a zeal for your will

[Gal 4:17-20]
Galatians 4:17–18 ESV
17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you,
“Make Much Of” = zealous, to have zeal for
Zeal is good for the right thing… What is Paul zealous for? --->19
Galatians 4:19 ESV
19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!
Be conformed to the image of Christ
Morphoo - formed = in the same nature… until you become like Christ is
Gal 2.20 “20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
imagery of child birth… love / pain… purpose!
this should be the prayer of every pastor for every church
the prayer of every father for every child
every mother for every child
every christian for themselves … are we zealous for this !?!?
every christian for each other...
See others transformed for the glory of Christ
The Message of Galatians 3. Paul’s Attitude to the Galatians (Verses 17–20)

The difference between Paul and the false teachers should now be clear. The false teachers were seeking themselves to dominate the Galatians; Paul longed that Christ be formed in them. They had a selfish eye to their own prestige and position; Paul was prepared to sacrifice himself for them, to be in travail until Christ was formed in them.

The Message of Galatians b. The Pastor’s Attitude to the People

Calvin wrote: ‘If ministers wish to do any good, let them labour to form Christ, not to form themselves, in their hearers.’

Are we striving to this end?
Gal 4.11 “11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain.”
Exalting Jesus in Galatians Give Us a Passion to See Others Transformed for the Glory of Christ

Paul says that he will not be satisfied until that happens. May God help us to be a people who are not satisfied until Christ is formed in us, until we take on the shape of Christ.

Paul’s prayer is - Show them how to walk by grace, Help them to trust in your Word, and give them a zeal for your will.
This seems like a good prayer for us as well .
PRAYER
God our father in heaven show us how to walk by grace in faith. Help us Lord Jesus to trust in your Word. Give us a passion, a fire, a zeal for you will above all else. Let us not be mere hearers but doers. Let us press on into one another until Christ is formed in us. This is Paul’s prayer and LORD Jesus this is ours. In your name we do pray, AMEN.
