This Week’s Theme: God Will Fix It!
This Week’s Word is High Priest: He was to serve as a representative and mediator between the people and Yahweh. It was the high priest’s responsibility to see that the covenant was enforced and to direct people to complete the duties of the temple and the law of Moses. He was responsible for the nation’s spiritual welfare and for making atonement for the people’s sins. The NT recognizes Jesus Christ as bringing this role to fulfillment, making the perfect sacrifice for the sins of his people, as both high priest and the sacrificial victim.
Memory Verse: Hebrews 7:26 “26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;”
Essence of the Text in a Sentence: God pronounced judgment on the house of Eli because he was not faithful in instructing his sons.
Sermon Proposition: Saints of God are confident that God will do what is right.
Sermon Objective: I want those in attendance to praise God for His faithfulness in fixing what was broken in their lives.
Sermon Text: 1 Samuel 2:27-36
1 Samuel 2:27–36 NKJV
27 Then a man of God came to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord: ‘Did I not clearly reveal Myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh’s house? 28 Did I not choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be My priest, to offer upon My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod before Me? And did I not give to the house of your father all the offerings of the children of Israel made by fire? 29 Why do you kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling place, and honor your sons more than Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’ 30 Therefore the Lord God of Israel says: ‘I said indeed that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me forever.’ But now the Lord says: ‘Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 And you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33 But any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age. 34 Now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them. 35 Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever. 36 And it shall come to pass that everyone who is left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and say, “Please, put me in one of the priestly positions, that I may eat a piece of bread.” ’ ”
INTRODUCTION:
TRANSITION: 1 Samuel chapter 1, it is during one of the times when Elkanah took his yearly trip to the Shiloh to worship by offering an offering to the LORD. The high priest at this time was Eli, whose name means “ascension.” Eli had two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were the priests of the LORD. According to the books of the Law the LORD God Almighty instituted the office of priest. Their responsibilities consisted of the following:
Tending to the Tabernacle: (Daily offering incense, keeping the lamp stand burning brightly, ) These functions included going up to the altar in the tabernacle courtyard (cf. Exod 20:24) and burning incense in the holy place (cf. Exod 30:7–9; 40:5), as well as all other official priestly activities performed while wearing “an ephod” (cf. Exod 28:1–6).

Presenting the Precepts

Leviticus 10:11 “11 and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses.””

Portray the People of God

Numbers 18:1 NKJV
1 Then the Lord said to Aaron: “You and your sons and your father’s house with you shall bear the iniquity related to the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you shall bear the iniquity associated with your priesthood.
Ex28:29 “29 “So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel on the breastplate of judgment over his heart, when he goes into the holy place, as a memorial before the Lord continually.”
Lev10:17 “17 “Why have you not eaten the sin offering in a holy place, since it is most holy, and God has given it to you to bear the guilt of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord?”

Submitted the Sacrifices

I. The Situation

In chapter 2, the story teller tells us in verse 12 that a problem existed, the text says that the sons of Eli [were] corrupt; they did not know the LORD.
According to verse 13-15, they exhibited an

Evil Appetite

1 Samuel 2:13–15 NKJV
13 And the priests’ custom with the people was that when any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fleshhook in his hand while the meat was boiling. 14 Then he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; and the priest would take for himself all that the fleshhook brought up. So they did in Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Also, before they burned the fat, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who sacrificed, “Give meat for roasting to the priest, for he will not take boiled meat from you, but raw.”

16 And if the man said to him, “They should really burn the fat first; then you may take as much as your heart desires,” he would then answer him, “No, but you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.”
Lastly, they exhibited an

Leaders May Have Contributed to Your Disdained

1 Samuel 2:17 NKJV
17 Therefore the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for men abhorred the offering of the Lord.

Leaders May Have Contributed to Your Dismissal

1 Samuel 2:24 NKJV
24 No, my sons! For it is not a good report that I hear. You make the Lord’s people transgress.

II. The Solution

God Removes

1 Samuel 2:31–34 NKJV
31 Behold, the days are coming that I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 And you will see an enemy in My dwelling place, despite all the good which God does for Israel. And there shall not be an old man in your house forever. 33 But any of your men whom I do not cut off from My altar shall consume your eyes and grieve your heart. And all the descendants of your house shall die in the flower of their age. 34 Now this shall be a sign to you that will come upon your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they shall die, both of them.

God Raises up

1 Samuel 2:35 NKJV
35 Then I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who shall do according to what is in My heart and in My mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before My anointed forever.
