- open your bibles to John chapter 17
Invite to Ascend Core Team April 16 Acts Series… Sent: “How Jesus built his church”

Context:

Zoom out and then zoom all the way in….
- In August we began a year in “growing our View of God” >
- Exodus: Delivered to Dwelled >
- John’s Gospel = Lets learn about the person of “Jesus”
- todays sermon, and then Easter we will close out John.
(All with our magnifying glass looking to see what God is revealing about himself through his Word)
Now… Zoom all the way in here with me…
In this passage we have Jesus praying a prayer to the father God.
Jesus Christ in flesh… Looks up and prays to God..
10ish prayers of Jesus… this one is by far the longest and the most vivid.
These are more than words on a page.… (Imagine what we could learn from Jesus prayer journal)
In this passage we could talk about so much… (Jesus eternal role as high priest, Gospel on display)
Transition: For us Today I want to keep our “magnifying Glass” If you will.... on one thing.. What do we learn about Jesus’s heart?
Prayer puts your heart on display:
Intent of past and future actions
Desires of the heart
Your request before God
Transition: When we look at this prayer we see Jesus intent, we see his desires, we see his request to God… we See the heart of Jesus our Savior …. and its simple and this is our big idea this morning.

B.I= In John 17: Jesus’ prayer is that we may be one.

Transition: So before we look at this passage lets pray.

Jesus’ intent is that his ministry lead to God’s glory.

John 17:1–12 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
To summarize the Intent of Jesus ministry would be to say Glorify the Son… Glorify the Father…
What Jesus intends he accomplishes.…
We do things with the best intentions but we do not how the the world in our hands…
the marathon runner trains with a goal in mind… but there are limits to the control of the results (life, injury, elements of the race).
What Jesus intents… will come true (God is not suprised)
Jesus:
Glory on earth V 1, 4
Glory on Heaven V 1, 4
Authority over flesh V 2
Give eternal life V 2
Manifested the Truth of God V6-10
“Them” (the believer) = Also us.
Know God V 3
Know Jesus V 3
Keep Gods word V 8
Believe V 8
glorify Jesus V 10
Transition: This is what Jesus intended and thus what he accomplished… and out of what was accomplished he now transitions to share what the “desired outcome” is.

Jesus desires that his people keep his word.

John 17:13–19 ESV
But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
This is directed right at Us…
What does it mean to “Keep his Word”?=
A. Hear
B. Believe
C. Joy Filled
D. lived out withstanding opposition
Difference between keeping someones kid, someones dog, and someones bowl they left at party
Jesus desires that we keep his word while he Keep us in this world…. V15
The Beauty: He is Sanctify us in Truth. V17
A. While we are here God is growing us….
B. Send them out… but sanctify them while they go 18
C. Gods word is powerful… its transformative (Keep it, and let it keep you)
D. Running Back running through Pads...
Transition: So Jesus intents for his earthly ministry to bring him glory, then he strengthens the believer so that they may keep and share his word, and now lastly we come to the ultimate aim of his prayer his request before God…

Jesus request that God makes us all one.

John 17:20–26 ESV
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
That they may be one…
What Jesus request… happens (He is one with the father)
What does it mean to be one?
What does Oneness mean for the believer?
how do we achieve it, or rather posses it?
(New reality with God + others)
We believe
John 17:20 ESV
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word,
All who believe in jesus through “word”… (those present hearers, and all future believers)
Heres what I have done, hear is who heard, and now lets talk about all they tell…
The foundation for our oneness is not similarity, or likability, social status, race, native language… it is simply our belief in Jesus.
We are a part of the family of God… a long line of people that Jesus has transformed our everything.
2. We dwell with God both now and in eternity.
John 17:24 ESV
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
Physical eternal dwelling with Jesus (He wants that with us)
Together We are building on eternal relationships.
Jesus and God and the HS are welcoming us into their party… come on!
Jesus looks at humanity and says The more the merrier.
3. The Love of God may overflow out of us.
John 17:25–26 ESV
O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
Belief leads to dwelling with God
Which leads to an overflow of Love...
Believer you have access to the peace of God get your eyes on Jesus
the world will come screaming in… I know I get it.
What does the world see when they look at you?
May we get our eyes on Jesus Glory and off the weight of this world. (we have a great opportunity for that this week)
may be keep his word, and let it keep us.
May we be one.
