ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

I wonder how long Potiphar’s wife thought she got away with her enticement of Joseph (Gen. 39)?  She secretly flirted with a man her husband trusted, but when Joseph wouldn’t compromise his integrity, she had him thrown in prison.  Thinking her seductive plan that had gone awry was now out of the way, she sat back in a sigh of relief.  But here we are centuries later fully aware of her evil motives.

There is no such thing as a secret!  People believe that it’s possible to live part of their lives one way, and to live another part of their lives another way assuming the two will never meet.  The Enron Executives will tell you the fallacy of that lie.

The only way to live a life of integrity is to live our lives as if everything is public.  Live as if there are no secrets.  That includes everything you do, everything you say, every place you go, and every thought you think is going to be known by all.  Jesus made that very clear in Luke 12:2-3:

“There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.  What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner room will be proclaimed from the roofs.”

Living your life out in the open, holding no secrets, is the key to a life of integrity.  If you live as if there are no secrets, peace rules your heart – not the fear of your deception being found out.  When you walk in integrity and honesty, nothing can come back to haunt you.

All of us make mistakes, but if you are open about them, confess your sins to God, and clear up offenses to others, then you can walk in complete freedom and innocence.  Your life will be protected, and the lives of those that love and trust you will be protected.  You will be preparing the way for generations to come.
