The Church Age
Luke 24:46-49
46 “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:1-5
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up, after He had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive to them after His suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying with them He ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, He said, “you heard from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:8-11
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Introduction
Last week we learned that Jesus built and established the church to:
· To be the visual representation of Christ and the Kingdom of God on earth all for the glory of God.
But when did the church begin and how long will it last?
The 3 Scripture readings earlier were events that occurred after Jesus rose from the dead.
· Before Jesus ascended to Heaven, He commissioned them to “Go and make disciples of all nations.”
· But they were to wait until they received the Holy Spirit from the Father.
· We are going to follow up these 3 readings and look at the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise that the disciples would be baptized with the Holy Spirit.
· Which led to Jesus ushering in the church age, the birth of the church.
Text
Acts 2:1-4
1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Context and Exegesis
· This event was the first Pentecost that would become an observance celebrated every year.
· The disciples were following Jesus’ instructions He gave to them in Luke 24:4-5
Not to depart from Jerusalem, but wait until they were baptized with the Holy Spirit.
· The text then describes this amazing and powerful filling of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples.
· Now there were many people from different nations who spoke in different languages that witnessed this event.
· And as the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit they began speaking in tongues – not the spiritual gift, but in a way everyone could understand what they were saying.
· The crowd was amazed and astonished because they understood the disciples as they were proclaiming the mighty works of God even though they spoke different languages.
· They were also perplexed, wondering what they witnessed meant.
· However, there were others who were mocking them and saying they were drunk.
· The crowd’s reaction led Peter to preach the Gospel message to the crowd.
· When they heard the Gospel proclaimed, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter what should they do.
· Peter responded, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
· That day 3000 people came to faith in Jesus Christ.
· This was the birth of the church.
· But it was imperative that they receive the Holy Spirit to dwell within them to empower them to carry out Christ’s plan and purpose for the church.
· To continue Jesus’ ministry He started on earth.
· Specifically, The Great Commission
