ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

I was praying, asking the Lord to give me inspiration to write this insert. With my head still bowed, when I opened my eyes I stared at my wedding ring. It’s my second wedding ring from Gloria, and it too is worn. It’s just that I’m hard on rings. I work with my hands and so it gets banged up a lot. My current one does not have the dazzle it once had. A jeweler buffed it to take out some of the dings, but I still wear it with pride. The only time I take it off any more is when I work in the shop.
When I glanced down at my ring the inspiration came. This worn ring says, “This heart is spoken for.” My bride gave it to me when we renewed our vows on our 25th anniversary. The sparkle I saw in her eyes in 1972 hasn’t tarnished one bit. I love to see that sparkle at the end of the day when she walks into the room. The sparkle comes right after I say the words, “Hello my love! Have I told you today I love you?” It’s followed with a peck on the smackers.
My beautiful bride also wears her second wedding from me. I, too, gave it with a growing love even though the first ring was worn out. She wears my ring…I wear her ring. She bought it. She owned it. She gave it. I wear it. This ring I wear says, “This one is mine!”
Do you remember your wedding vows? I do. “This ring is a symbol of my vow…” It’s a symbol, an advertisement to all others…but it means nothing unless our heart is reserved for them only. Your ring talks, but what does your heart, speech, and actions communicate? Rings wear out, but the sparkle in their eye should never fade! Like a ring, our spouse needs a “love buff” daily to keep the sparkle alive.
