ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

His Spirit moved in me long ago to assure me I would make it through the tough ordeal.  I have to tell you…I would not have made it if it were not for the assurance of a God bigger than my problem, was on my side, watching over me.

My ordeal?  I was in my third ministry in a church that had chewed up three associate ministers and four secretaries during my four and a half year ministry.  Now they were chewing on me.  I had just lost my Mom to cancer, my Dad was on the downhill side of his fight with emphysema, my oldest son was going through chemotherapy for cancer and an amputation of his left leg, my wife lost her Mom to cancer and her Dad to heart disease, I was asked to resign from the church, and so we lost our health insurance coverage on Kevin, and I was unemployed for 10 ½ months.  Emotionally depleted, financially shipwrecked, no security, and a whoppin’ big hole in my confidence level…there I sat on the park bench weeping before the Lord.  And then the voice spoke from Heaven, “You’ve got Me!”  It was like a great big sledgehammer hit me between the eyes: I’ve got the greatest resource in the universe and I haven’t even begun to tap it!!!

I have no doubt that God is bigger than any problem we face, but it’s our belief in God that makes the difference between sink or swim.  Virgil (70-19 B.C.) put it this way.  “They can conquer who believe they can.”

When I’m peggin’ out the bottom of the confidence-tank, I remember the voice I heard on the park bench.  Well Mom, Dad…if you can hear me, I just want you to know that I made it.  I overcame it through the faith in God that you instilled in me.  I believe without a doubt He IS bigger than my problem!
