ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

I’d like to encourage you to revisit the meaning of your wedding ring.  Wedding rings give value to a marriage depending on whether you fulfill the vows it signifies.  By that I mean the ring has meaning only if your commitment to your spouse is strong.

Failure to honor your marriage (which is a faith commitment) renders its symbolism meaningless.  In fact it scandalizes your vows

If your ring expresses that your heart is reserved only for your spouse, then your ring glows with a radiant beauty no matter how old and tarnished it is.  Your ring then has meaning, and it is a testimony to others.

But if it is a mask for what’s really in your heart, not only is your ring deceptive, but also it’s dangerous!  It’s dangerous because your spouse thinks you are still faithful to them; and it’s dangerous to the one you are flirting with.  It tells them you don’t take vows seriously nor your marriage.

On the other hand, if you forgot one day to wear your ring, but you remained true to your vows, then your faithfulness compensates for not wearing the sign of your vows.

The presence of your ring does not bring divine favor…the heart of true commitment does!

To God, rings do not mean you are married…but your heart reserved only for your spouse does.  To Him the vow means more than the ring.  And when you think about it…that’s the way you want it too!
