ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

Mistakes…wrong decisions…we all make them.  I’ve made more than I care to admit.  By God’s grace, I’ll make less of them.  But are they wasted?  Do they make nothing but debits against our life?  Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely.

Some of our mistakes are so costly we can’t afford to make them again.  Granted, the debit of pain is more than the credit of the lesson learned.  If it were not painful, we wouldn’t bother trying to avoid bad decisions.  Maturity is learning from our mistakes.  Wisdom is learning from someone else’s mistakes.

How is your wisdom quotient?  If you have to try everything yourself, no matter how much you are warned by others, “Don’t go there!” then your wisdom quotient is nil.  Battle scars are pretty ugly when you get them from stubborn disobedience, or turn a deaf ear to wise counsel.  But you can turn ugly battle scars into respected stripes on the shoulder if you “don’t go there” ever again, or because you heeded a warning message.

Now, let’s test that wisdom quotient again.  Do you touch the wall when you see a sign that says, “wet paint”?  If you know a certain TV program is not good for your mind, do you watch it anyway?  Do you play with certain temptations when God has warned, “Don’t go there”?  Would you make a different decision if Jesus walked in the room unexpectedly?

How many digits do you have in your wisdom quotient now?  If it’s still zero, you’ve booked a long cruise in a rubber dingy without an oar.  You are at the mercy of the currents…and believe me, there’s plenty of sharks in these waters.

Want to avoid Satan’s jaws?  Think before acting.  Heed the warnings along the way.  Learn from your mistakes.

Just remember: You can graduate from the school of hard knocks…but you can’t educate a fool to abandon his folly.
