ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

I just got back from a company BBQ with chicken, ribs, brisket, corn on the cob, fruit, salad, beans, rolls and cookies.  Needless to say, it’s going to be a long afternoon trying to stay alert.  Gloria won’t need to fix supper tonight.

On the walk back to my office I thought of various applications of the need of self-control.  Without it there’s an accompanying misery if we do not stay alert.

Think of the mess that we get ourselves in if we don’t apply self-control to our tongue.  Many a cold evening is spent in the home because we let the tongue fly out of control.

There’s a need of self-control when we visit either Macy’s (for the gals) or the Tool Crib (for the guys).  Spending out of control has a way of punishing you for several months as you work to pay it off.

Each of us can think of several marriages that have crashed on the rocks because of lust of the flesh.  Whether it is in the mind or acted out in the flesh, intimacy is lost, and along with it, trust from our partner.

Not being able to control a drinking habit has ruined many a life, marriage, family and reputation.  Unfortunately the quick-time buzz punishes long after the hangover has worn off.

You might not think our profession needs self-control, but time away from our family has its price tag too.  You can never replace the moment you were not there to see your son run that touchdown or your daughter’s solo in the musical.

“Like a city that is broken into and without walls is a man who has no control over his spirit.”  (Prov. 25:28)

Since self-control is our front line of defense in so many critical areas of life, it makes sense to take inventory and back off of the areas where we are failing.  A spirit out of control leads to a damaged reputation…and that can soon earn you a destiny.  But is it the one you want?!
