Hebrews 10:14

No More Sacrifices

The argument of Hebrews: Under the New Covenant in Christ, the ceremonies and customs of the Mosaic covenant have come to completion; something better has come.
Hebrews 8:5 They served as a copy and shadow of heavenly things; placeholders, foreshadowing the substance that was coming.
When you see a shadow; you look for the cause, what is real, the thing of substance.
The regular sacrifice, the feasts, the priestly system; they are no longer necessary, all because of Christ.
No more altars, but tables. No more blood poured out or slaughtered beasts, but bread and wine shared at a meal. No more priests, but teachers, shepherds.
What is it about Christ and his death on the cross that could bring an end to 1300 years of ritual sacrifice?
The Infinite Substance of Christ’s Sacrifice
The Infinite Reach of Christ’s Sacrifice

The Infinite Substance of Christ’s Sacrifice

He is the Eternal Son

He is God’s Word - the Logos of John 1

Ancient Greek philosophy was concerned with answering the ultimate questions of reality. They were seeking to find ultimate truth. They wanted to find the reality that lies behind all other things = logos/word. This logos was thought to be an impersonal force, not a personal being.
It was radical, then, when John says that this logos became flesh and dwelt among us.
The Lord Jesus was not a Divine man, nor a humanized God; He was the God-man. Forever God, and now forever man. When the eternal logos, the Word, became flesh, He did not stop being God, nor did He set aside any of His Divine attributes; but He did become flesh; being made in all things like unto His brethren.
This is the God-man who was pierced for our transgressions; crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)
This is the God-Man who bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. (1 Peter 2:24)

He is the one who spoke all things into being:

Col 1:15-16 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
He is one with the Father (Jn 10:30); the Son of God; the Holy One, King of kings, Lord of lords, the first and the last, the living one, the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

He is the author of life who holds the power of death and hell

Jesus is not a victim, he laid down his life, he has authority to take it up again.
Jn 10:14–18 I am the good shepherd… and I lay down my life for the sheep… I lay down my life that I may take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.

He is the Spotless Lamb

Jn 1:29, He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
Without blemish, His life was lived wholly for God. He was like us in every way, except without sin Did not just passively avoid error, He actively did God’s will

This is the one who took the cross

More than just another lamb:
The lamb sacrificed in Gen 3 to cover the sin of Adam and Eve, the ram provided as a substitute in Gen 22 so that Isaac would be spared, the Passover Lamb of Ex. 12, the scapegoat of Leviticus, who would carry the peoples’ sins into the wilderness: All of these were signs pointing to Christ, the Lamb of God.
Better than any animal from the flock, Christ’s offering was infinitely better because he was infinitely more substantial than every other offering every made.

The Infinite Reach of Christ’s Work

He is a better priest

The priest in the OT, they were finite and sinful men. Their work was continual, they made perpetual sacrifice for prayer and atonement.
There were no chairs because the work was never done.
Jesus said, it is finished, and when he was raised, he was seated at the right hand of the father; His work of atonement was completed.

His work perfects for all time those who are being sanctified

His Work Perfects

Perfects = makes complete - qualified.
What Hebrews has in mind, the consecration of the priest through the sprinkling of the blood.
Before entering the Temple, the priest had to make atonement for his own sin, be covered with the sacrifice, then go make sacrifices for others.
Only when consecrated could the priest enter the presence of God in worship and prayer.
Christ makes you perfect, consecrated, to enter into the presence of God.
Heb 10:19–20 Therefore since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh.

His Work Perfects for all time

“All Time” His work has eternal efficacy, makes us completely complete.
You have eternal security, not because of anything you’ve done, but because of Christ in you.
His righteousness is abundant and eternal, because he is abundant and eternal. His death opened the storehouse of grace, and the doors will never be shut.
You cannot exhaust His grace, nor can you empty His cup of blessing. No sin is so great that our savior cannot deliver you, redeem your life from the pit, and set you on the path of righteousness and peace; simply repent and look to him for salvation.

His Work Perfects for all time those who are being sanctified

You are qualified, you are secure, and you are being transformed, remade in the image of Christ. You are a new creation, the old is gone, the new has come, that you may grow into the likeness of Christ.

The “Good” of Good Friday is actually Magnificent.

Our lives rest on the present power of a past event.
You remember where you were on 9-11, and for many, it completely changed the course of their lives, but the farther away we get from that day, the less impact it has. As tragic as it was, evil men terrorizing the world, it’s shadow fades over time.
There is no other past event that has such present power, to continue to give life, to bring forgiveness and peace, and to fill us with hope for what is to come.
In the Cross of Christ I Glory It towers over the wrecks of time All the light of sacred story Gathers round its head sublime
No other life, no other death, had such an effect on all of creation. What was revealed at the cross - the magnitude of the sacrifice and its eternal effect - in the light of the cross we see not just our perfect Savior, but our salvation, to the glory of God.
