On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead?
He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”
Then they remembered his words.
When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others.
It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.
He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
They gave him a piece of broiled fish,
and he took it and ate it in their presence.
He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.
He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day,
and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.
He is Risen! He has conquered death and sin!

“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

For the wages of sin is death...
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
not by works, so that no one can boast.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,
in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Parents who did all they could to train up their child
She appeared to be doing well, but they find out she has been leading a double life
She is addicted to drugs, gets pregnant, openly rebels against them,
Parents are humiliated
Parents feel...
ashamed
defeated
betrayed
disappointed
angry
angry at their daughter
angry at God, they did their part to raise her, why didn’t God?
How do you help them? What do they need?
Gospel. Jesus’ death and resurrection.
How does that help?

God is not surprised, He knows

He knows our sin, and He knows the sins of others in our lives - more aware than we are
He has a plan to overcome evil with good… at great cost to Himself
Though these parents feel overwhelmed by this sin, this betrayal… Jesus felt it even more.
In fact, he feels their sin just as much…
We are more flawed than we think...
We are more flawed than we think...
We all rebel
NO amount of external controls, protection from worldly influence, will stop our urges while we are in this flesh
We trust ourselves more than we trust God
We fail to obey, or outright refuse to obey God’s commands and justify ourselves with high-sounding logic
We don’t consider others greater than ourselves… if it infringes our ‘freedoms’
We don’t consider the Lord’s instructions to love and pray for our enemies
We justify our outbursts of anger and hatred.
We falsely accuse rather than seek the truth
We are quick to point at others rather than face our own failure to love the Lord our God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, or to love our neighbors
We fail to forgive others as God has forgiven us.
We fail to leave vengeance to the Lord
We fail to trust Him
We fail to obey Him when He says not to forsake gathering together with the saints when it interferes with our past-times, which really are the priorities in our lives over the Lord.
We blame Him for the ravages of sin in this world
We are flawed and rebelling against Him in so many ways… and
Jesus suffered for us

for our sin, and for the sins of others
He bore our sins in his body on the cross
He was beaten
He was despised
He was rejected
He was smitten
He was flogged
He was spit on
He was stripped and humiliated
He was mocked
He was nailed to the cross
He who knew no sin, became sin for us
He died a horrible, asphyxiating death, feeling the weight of his body wrenching on the nails through his wrists, the scraping of the wood upon his raw flesh as he gasped for breath
Saying, Father forgive them...
and continuing Until...
It is finished came from his lips

As the scriptures say, he took everything that stood against us, all the ways we have rebelled against the Lord, and nailed it to the cross.
He suffered the shame
He suffered the agony
He suffered the consequences
He suffered the separation from God
He took it all, while we were still sinners, and made full atonement for our sins.
That is, he fully satisfied the wrath of our Holy, Just, Righteous Creator, Lord and God.
But he didn’t just take and satisfy the wrath of God for our sins, he did it for the whole world… including this child who has betrayed, rebelled, and hurt them.
God’s love is not based upon performance

we are accepted,
we are beloved children of God, even when the consequences of our sin remains
more loved and accepted than we can imagine
Only God’s love in the Gospel can change us

Even though we know these things, we still rebel against our Lord
Even though we know the gospel, we will treat as an unholy thing the blood that purified us
Even though we know God’s great forgiveness to us, we are still like the slave that though forgiven his debt, went out and beat his fellow slave for a few dollars of debt to us.
Our hearts are wicked.
Our sin deceives us into thinking we are so wise, so justified in our lack of love and consideration to others, in our outbursts of anger, in our giving into our idolatrous pleasures, in our conformity to the world rather than being transformed.
We need a heart change.
We cannot do it.
What can?
The Gospel.
God in His infinite kindness, God our creator can transform our hearts and minds through His word, the good news of forgiveness, and change.
Christ’s death secured our forgiveness.
Christ’s resurrection secured our heart transformation - our new resurrected life, as we will set our hearts on Him, and fix our eyes on Him, the author and perfector of our faith.
Just as we are saved by faith, so we need to live in Him and the good news of the gospel daily.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him,
rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people,
I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.
I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,
and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength
he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,
far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,
which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:
that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Once we know the Gospel, we can live it and give it to others

He knows and will work evil out for good for those who love him

Only God’s love in the gospel can change us
Just as we are saved by faith, we need to live in Him and the good news of the gospel daily.
The Gospel enables us to live in the power of the resurrection!
