24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Historical Events that have impacted me
Fascination with WWI in primary school
September 11th - vivid memory
These events are known globally and have had a global impact - we are often unaware of how much our lives and beliefs have been shaped by historical events.
But there are other events that have impacted me far more deeply than these well known events
23rd September 2006 - Married
20th July 2013 - Birth of our first child
The more direct impact an event has on our life, the more significant that event is to us.
Many look dispassionately at the cross because they don’t have a clear idea of how it directly impacts their life today!
Jesus’s death is a historical fact
“The crucifixion of Jesus by the Romans is one of the most secure facts we have about his life.” - Bart Ehrman - Atheist Scholar
2. Jesus died on the cross not just as an act of love, or as an example to us of self sacrifice, but according to scripture He died for the sins of the world
It has become fashionable of late to say that this idea of Jesus bearing our sins as a substitute is a modern idea but it is clear from scripture that Jesus died in place of sinners.
Eusebius (265-340AD) “The Lamb of God was chastised on our behalf, and suffered a penalty He did not owe, but which we owed because of the multitude of our sins, and so he became the cause of the forgivenness of sins, because He received death for us, and transferred to Himself the scouring, the insults, and the dishonour which were due to us.”
He Himself bore our sins in his body on the tree - 1 pet 2:24
This verse is the apostle Peter’s micro version of the Prophet Isaiah’s writing about the suffering servant
4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
9 And they made his grave with the wicked
and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Jesus is the suffering servant of Isaiah who bears the sins of His people on the cross.
If Jesus bore our sin, our grief, our sorrow then we don’t have to any longer! Pilgrims progress - Christian’s burden.
Can you say with the apostle Peter, He bore my sins?
3. According to scripture, if you are a Christian you died at the cross too!
2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.
When I look at the cross I see my own death - the death of my old self, the me who wanted to live for himself, for his own pleasure, for his own glory. That Graham died on the tree with Jesus Christ 2000 years ago. When you look at the cross do you see your own death?
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
4. The cross is your power for righteous living
That we might die to sin and live to righteousness, by His wounds you have been healed!
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
but when he says that Christ suffered, that we being dead to sins should live to righteousness, he intimates that there is power in Christ’s death to mortify our flesh, - Calvin
Let me say something controversial - if you are to be saved at all, you must be saved by works. Before you chase me out of here as a heretic let me clarify - you are saved by works, but not your own! You are saved by the works of Jesus Christ alone, by His dying, by His rising. If you believe and trust in His works on your behalf, you will be saved.
