RESPONSIVE READING: PS. 16.
TODAY, THE LORD WILL GIVE YOU A KEY.
Today, I come in Jesus’ name to give you seven reasons why you should not be afraid of the Devil.
Today’s assignment is: to read Colossians. Look for all the verses speaking to Jesus’ authority over darkness, our deliverance from darkness, and on godly behavior.
I now understand why Jesus went far north to Caesarea Philippi. I will share it with you.
INTRODUCTION
When we hear Jesus words: upon this rock I shall build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
I’ve always thought, the flood gates of will attack, attack, attack, but not prevail. No matter what Satan and his hoard try to do against the church, it would not overcome because the church stands on the rock of Christ.
The Gates of Hell, or Hades has a deeper meaning. Hell or Hades describes the place of the dead and the realm of the underworld.
THE OT word for hell is Sheol. The righteous and the wicked all had to go there. The righteous did not stay. David said, “Thou shall not leave my soul in Sheol.
The NT place of torment is called, Gehenna. The term refers to the valley outside of Jerusalem used as a garbage dump and a place for idolatry. The valley is called the Hinnon Valley. Jesus used it as a description of eternal torment.
Mark 9:48 (NIV)
where “ ‘the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.’
I do not know nor have I read of any Christians throughout history who were afraid of Satan. They acknowledged Satan’s subtle attacks or fiery darts, But they were never afraid. The only time a saint of God is afraid of Satan is when they open a door to the flesh. If you have opened the door, the scripture tells you today how to close the door.
The worst mistake you can make is to believe Satan doesn’t exist.
Luke 10:18–20 (NIV)
Jesus said, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
You have a hedge of protection from the enemy. Angels watch over you. The keys to Satan’s power is this.
If you go back in time, Caesarea Philippi had a history of pagan worship.
First,
From the time of Moses, the area was known as Bashan- the home of The sons of Anak.
In the days of Joshua, people believed these descendents of Anak were the sons of fallen angels.
Their story is in Gen. 6:1-2
Genesis 6:1–2 NIV
When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose.
Fallen angels slept with women and produced giants. The descendents of Anak were freaks of nature. They were taller and stronger than other nations. The Amalekites, the Hittites, the Jebusites and the Amorites. Goliath was a descendent of Anak.
In Ps. 22, David, referred to them when he cried out to God in distress.
Psalm 22:11–12 (NIV)
Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help. Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
The Bulls of Bashan were the sons of Anak. A fierce people with almost supernatural strength, had surrounded him.
Second: Mt. Hermon stood in this area. When king Solomon died, his son Rehaboam divided Israel. Jereboah became king of the norther ten tribes called Israel. Out of fear the people were turn from him, he restored the worship of the golden calf.
1 kings. 12:26-30 “Jeroboam thought to himself, “The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord…
He said to the people, “It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.” One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. (Right hat Mt. Hermon). And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.”
Third: The temples of Zeus and Pan stood there. There followers offered all kinds of detestable acts of worship. Right at the foot of Mt. Hermon, there was a cave called the Gates of Hell-the underworld- the doorway into the demonic realm. People believed idol gods lived their during winter and came out in the torrents of water during the spring and summer.
When Jesus told his disciples, Upon this Rock, “ I will build my church and the Gates of hell shall not prevail against it,” He was standing on top of the gates of hell. He was standing at the doorway of hades. He said, I am will set up shop on top of Satan’s headquarters.

The disciples did not understand Jesus’ statement until after the Resurrection.

The followers of Jesus possessed the power to cast out demons when the Holy Spirit fell upon them after Pentecost. Even the first deacons ministered in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:6–7 (NIV)
When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed.
Satan needs people to inhabit to operate.
Matthew 12:43–45 (NIV) “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ [a person]. When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
Satan enters the mind, before it enters the body. Darkness cannot gain a foothold when we gird our minds against darkness through faith in Jesus Christ. Satan gains a foothold is when you believe it has already occupied a space.
HERE ARE 7 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF SATAN.

1. SATAN NEVER CREATED ANYTHING. IT CAN ONLY DECEIVE.

It did not make the world, or people, or a tree or even a blade of grass. Satan is a liar and the father of lies. It can only deceive; it cannot create.
JESUS IS THE CO-CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE.
John 1:1–4 (NKJV)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.

2. Jesus co-created all spiritual beings.

Colossians 1:15–16 NIV
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Jesus created angels along with God, the Father.

3. God has placed all principalities and powers under his feet on our behalf.

Ephesians 1:22 NIV
And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,

4. Jesus is the head over every spirit.

Colossians 2:10 NIV
and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.
Jesus is in charge over every realm and spiritual entity. He gave the church his power when he gave us his fullness.

5. Jesus came to destroy the Satan’s power.

1 John 3:8 NIV
The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.
Jesus came to undo everything Satan has done to the world.

6. Jesus Christ disarmed Satan.

Paul revealed Jesus power and authority over Satan and the kingdom of darkness.
Colossians 2:15 NIV
And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
WHEN JESUS DIED ON THE CROSS, HE DIVESTED SATAN OF HIS POWER AND RENDERED HIM HARMLESS.

7. Jesus rescued you from the dominion of darkness

Colossians 1:13 NIV
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,
We have been translation from the kingdom of darkness. We moved away to another land- the kingdom of God. We have no part of Satan’s dominion.
HERE IS HOW YOU CLOSE THE DOOR TO SATAN’S DOMINION.

Be kind and gentle and loving to everyone.

Colossians 3:8 NIV
But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.
These things open to door to idolatry and Satan’s influence.
FINALLY.

Do not allow anyone or anything take the throne of your heart but Jesus Christ.

Psalm 16
Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”
Ps. 16:4-5 “Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips. Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.”
Ps. 16:8-10 “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay.”
