Romans 15:7–13 LSB
7 Therefore, accept one another, just as Christ also accepted us to the glory of God. 8 For I say that Christ has become a servant to the circumcision on behalf of the truth of God to confirm the promises given to the fathers, 9 and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, “THEREFORE I WILL GIVE PRAISE TO YOU AMONG THE GENTILES, AND I WILL SING TO YOUR NAME.” 10 And again he says, “REJOICE, O GENTILES, WITH HIS PEOPLE.” 11 And again, “PRAISE THE LORD ALL YOU GENTILES, AND LET ALL THE PEOPLES PRAISE HIM.” 12 And again Isaiah says, “THERE SHALL COME THE ROOT OF JESSE, AND HE WHO ARISES TO RULE OVER THE GENTILES, IN HIM SHALL THE GENTILES HOPE.” 13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
brief cover of the form and layout of the text.
I. The Prompting of Paul (15:1–4, 8–12)
A. His exhortation (15:1–2): Paul urges the mature believer not to please himself but to build up the faith of weaker Christians.
B. His example (15:3–4, 8–12)
1. He points to the Scriptures (15:4): Its pages are full of examples where many endured and encouraged others.
2. He points to the Savior (15:3, 8–12).
a. Jesus came not to gratify himself but to give himself (15:3).
b. Jesus came to guarantee God’s salvation to Jews and Gentiles (15:8–12).
(1) To the Jews (15:8): He came to show that God keeps his promises to the Jews.
(2) To the Gentiles (15:9–12): See also Deuteronomy 32:43; Psalm 18:49; and Isaiah 11:10.
Paul in two places breaks into prayer during this exortation
Romans 15:5–6 LSB
5 Now may the God of perseverance and encouragement grant you to be of the same mind with one another according to Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:13 LSB
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
IT MATTERED GREATLY THAT THEY OBEY THE COMMAND TO UNITY
All of this points to God’s salvation through Jesus the Christ
We must have perfect unity in the salvation of God - the rest we can discuss and debate.
Perfect harmony in this:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead and on the third day rose again, ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the One World Wide Body of Christ, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
We are agents of peace - blessed are the feet of them who bring good news.
Matthew 5:9 LSB
9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
The flesh is not able to please God
Romans 8:5–9 LSB
5 For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, 7 because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God, for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, 8 and those who are in the flesh are not able to please God. 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
This causes division homes - When one spouse loves God in Christ and the other loves their own lusts and darkness
When parents love God and their children despise them for it.
When people hate you for no reason other than that you love God
In this God has called you to patiently serve, love, and live amongst a lost generation that is an actual enemy of Christ.
You need friends, you need to have the joy of the Lord that can only come from a supernatural source.
THE HOLY SPIRIT
Only God can empower you to continue the good fight.
I feel so drained after conversations with people who don’t agree with or understand salvation through Christ!
Supernatural comfort and leading of the Spirit
Uplifting from other brothers and sisters in Christ
Where do you find true joy?
Economy - if it fails are you able to find joy?
Society - if it persecutes the righteous, can you find joy?
Yes you can.
The church does not depend on governmental providence
The church does not depend on earthly wealth and possessions to walk in complete joy
Where do you find your joy? If you lost everything earthly would you still be able to find joy?
Your family
Your church
Your hope of heaven
These are the things that matter more than wealth, possessions, and anything else the world has to offer.
All of this is eternal, My encouragement to you is that you stay in harmony with God’s way, through Jesus Christ your savior. You are where you are because of God’s overarching plan. If you are in Christ, you are secure.
COMMUNION LITURGY
Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.
Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have failed to be an obedient church.
We have not done your will.
We have broken your law.
We have rebelled against your love,
we have not loved our neighbors,
and we have not heard the cry of the needy.
Forgive us, we pray.
Free us for joyful obedience,
through Christ our Lord. Amen
PAUSE All pray in silence.
On the night in which he gave himself up for us,
he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you.
Do this in remembrance of me.”
When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said:
“Drink from this, all of you;
this is my blood of the new covenant,
poured out for you and for many
for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this as often as you drink it,
In remembrance of me.”
And so,
In remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving
as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ’s offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
By your Spirit make us one with Christ,
one with each other,
and one in ministry to all the world,
until Christ comes in final victory
and we feast at his heavenly banquet.
Through your Son Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit in your holy church,
all honor and glory is yours, almighty Father,
Now and forever.
PLEASE STAND AS WE PRAY THE LORD’S PRAYER TOGETHER
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
AMEN
