Titus 2:2 ESV
2 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.
Titus 2:6 ESV
6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
Sober-minded: restrained, temperate
not under the influence of other things (food, substances, entertainment, emotions)
Free from the influence of these things
Clear, even-keeled
Control of what goes in
Dignified: honorable, worthy of respect, of good character, revered
other people are following you
you are setting the tone
you are modeling Scriptures
people can’t bring a charge against you
immoral things, unrighteous things are incompatible with who you are
Control of what goes out
Self-Controlled: moderate, sensible
not a lack of strength
INSTEAD, strength under control
Our pride wants us to show off our strength
In our selfishness we want to use our strength to accomplish our purposes
Control of what goes out
Sound (healthy) in Faith (beliefs/trust/cognition)
You must be a student of God’s Word
You must model and teach your sons
You know what you believe
Sound in Love (actions/emotions/affection)
You must model servant-leadership in humility
You must teach and show your sons the value of this, do it alongside them
You live out what you believe
Sound in Steadfastness (perseverance, ability to endure)
You must fight to live this out in the difficult times.
Invite your sons into the conversation to see what the hard times are like and how you handle/approach those things
If you want your sons to invite your help, they should see that modeled in fathers who invite and beg for the help of their Heavenly Father.
You are consistent in what you believe
