Jesus Teaching In The Synagogue

Jesus has come back to His hometown
Has proclaimed His mission to them
the prophecies of Isaiah pertaining to the Messiah has now been fulfilled
These prophecies told us of the desperate need we have of a savior
How impossible it is for us to be able to save ourselves
and it is only by grace are we saved.
Now they were marveling at his wonderful words V 22
But they could not get over the fact that this was a local boy
And Jesus can read their minds ...
the same as Jesus can read our minds..
I guess Jesus had not read Dale Carnegie’s book How to make friends and influence people.
because when it was over they were trying to murder Him
Jesus exposed their hearts and they were not impressed
we will look at what Jesus said and what He ment by it
Read V 33-30

Prove Yourself

Jesus claimed He was the Messiah
At His baptism the Father spoke from Heaven and declared this is my beloved Son
He has done many miracles
he has cast out demons
He has proven to all who want to believe that He is who He claims to be
but to these proud, gentile, and Samaritan haters.
they cant get past the fact that this is Little Jesus all grown up
So Jesus says out loud what they are thinking
V 23 prove yourself
put up or shut up
what you did at Capernamum...
so they know...
V 24 their problem was not evidence but faith
they would not allow themselves to believe in a local boy
they were to familiar with Him
Jesus did healings and other signs and wonders but people still did not put their trust in Him as the Messiah of God
Jesus did prove Himself but all they wanted was more and more
again the rich man and Lazarus
there is a conversation between the rich man and Abraham..
Luke 16:27–31 LSB
“And he said, ‘Then I am asking you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ “But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ “But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ “But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
signs and wonders will not convince anyone to put their faith in Jesus
some one coming back from the dead will not
the gospel is the power
Romans 1:16 LSB
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
the word has to be given, not miracles
the miracles were a sign pointing to Jesus as the Messiah
Romans 10:13–17 (LSB)
for “WHOEVER CALLS ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?
And how will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO PROCLAIM GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!”
However, they did not all heed the good news, for Isaiah says, “LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
now Jesus is going to give an example from Elijah

The Drought And The Widow

V 25 setting the scene
V 26 God’s sovereignty
out of all the widows..
God chose this one outside of Israel
why? because He is God and from before the foundation of the world God decreed this would happen
these people thought they had a monopoly on God and His blessings
they thought that because they were of the seed of Abraham that they had no worries
Jesus is here pointing out that God can and will go elsewhere to find faith
even if it is to the despised gentiles
this woman had to prove her faith by her works
make take the last of your food and give it to me and you will have enough to last
well pump and jug of water
Jesus is telling them God has gone outside of Israel to bless someone
and He will do it again

Naaman

V 27
Naaman was a Assyrian General who fought against Israel
Naaman had Israeli slaves
Naaman was the only person that God healed of leprosy
Again God went outside of the nation to demonstrate His sovereignty
to show an apostate nation that they are not Exclusive
Jesus was revealing their heart, and it was making them angry
they had deceived themselves into thinking that they were special
that they were on their way to heaven
that they were in the right standing with God
But God had to go outside the borders to find faith
both of these instances faith was required
the faith resulted in good works
James 2:14 LSB
What use is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but he has no works? Can that faith save him?
James 2:17 LSB
Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead by itself.
These Nazarines thought that they had a right standing with God
they go to church once a week
they do the feasts and sacrifices (most of the time)
they try to obey the law
but the works they produce is attempted murder
there are a lot of people today who claim that they are Christians but their attitudes and behavior do not conform to a regenerated person
some one who is being conformed to the image of Christ
does someone need works to be saved?
No but works is the evidence that there has been regeneration
evidence that you are a new creation
2 Corinthians 5:17 LSB
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
Do we want Jesus to expose our hearts?
or are we hiding secret sins?
King David said to God to try him show David his secret sins that he can deal with them
that should be our attitude
our longing should be to be like Christ
The hymn Cleanse me by Edwin Orr
Search me, O God, And know my heart today; Try me, O Savior, Know my thoughts, I pray. See if there be Some wicked way in me; Cleanse me from every sin And set me free.
I praise Thee, Lord, For cleansing me from sin; Fulfill Thy Word, And make me pure within. Fill me with fire Where once I burned with shame; Grant my desire To magnify Thy Name.
Lord, take my life, And make it wholly Thine; Fill my poor heart With Thy great love divine. Take all my will, My passion, self and pride;
I now surrender, Lord In me abide.
O Holy Ghost, Revival comes from Thee; Send a revival, Start the work in me. Thy Word declares Thou wilt supply our need; For blessings now, O Lord, I humbly plead.
Let this be the cry of our Hearts
