Matthew 4:12–17 KJV 1900
Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee; And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Departure Time

after John’s ministry
The fact that Matthew shares allows the Jewish readers identify the start of Jesus’ ministry.
Mark 1:14 KJV 1900
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
Luke 4:14 KJV 1900
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
John 2:11 KJV 1900
This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
from home to fertile soil
Matthew 13:54–57 KJV 1900
And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things? And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.
If Jesus came to your town, what would you do? Would you recognize His Deity or focus on His humanity? Would you worship His person or analyze His every move? If Jesus came to your town would you even recognize Him or pass Him by like a clown? In order to know the real Jesus, you must receive Him, study Him, and for heaven’s sake trust in Him!

Distinctive Truths

Lack of divine communication (darkness; obscurity)
Isaiah 9:1–2 KJV 1900
Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, When at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, And afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, Beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: They that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
Isaiah 60:1–3 KJV 1900
Arise, shine; for thy light is come, And the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And gross darkness the people: But the Lord shall arise upon thee, And his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, And kings to the brightness of thy rising.
The darkness is refering to a life, people, culture that is devoid of Scriptural knowledge. They have the testemony of nature and of conscience, but have not yet recieved the Word of God. Or have access to it but willingly ignore the Gospel truth. For the Scriptures teach of Jesus.
John 5:39 KJV 1900
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
Titus 1:2 KJV 1900
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
surprising Light
John 1:9–12 KJV 1900
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
It is fascinating the John the Baptist’s father remembered this passage in Isaiah.
Luke 1:78–79 KJV 1900
Through the tender mercy of our God; Whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.
To live in Christ is to be able to walk in the way of peace, to live outside of Christ brings the way of destruction.

Decision Time

repent (acknowledgement of sin, and turning from it)
Jesus now builds upon the preaching of John the Baptist
Matthew 3:2 KJV 1900
And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
For the Jewish audience this was confirmation and continuation of conviction about their current belief structure.
Jew’s had become either materialistic and believe that the Law was simply a work of a great man that had amazing insights to how to build a full functioning society. Or the believed the Law was God’s Word but convoluted it to fit their human understanding of it.
Either way they needed to change their mind about what they believed and trust in Jesus for salvation.
faith
Hebrews 11:1 KJV 1900
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:6 KJV 1900
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
