INTRODUCTION
Let’s turn together
in our Bibles
to Luke’s gospel.
Luke
chapter 3.
& we’re gonna read
verse 15 & 16.
Luke 3:15-16.
& when you find that
in your Bible
pls stand for
the reading
of God’s Word.
The title of
today’s teaching is.
Holy Spirit Baptism.
& I had to do something
I’ve never done bfr.
I had to split this message
into at least two parts.
So, this message will be
shorter than normal.
Today is part 1.
& if the Lord is willing
we’ll cover the 2nd part
nxt week.
In Luke 3:15-16
the Scriptures say
Luke 3:15–16 (NIV)
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.
16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
You may be seated.
Holy Spirit baptism
Those words can cause
dfrnt reactions
in dfrnt ppl.
Some react to those words
w/ expectation
& excitement.
Others react w/
alarm
& apprehension.
But we need not fear
those words
Nor the truths
Those words
communicate.
Today we’re gonna learn
Four truths abt
Holy Spirit baptized
& nxt week
If the Lord is willing
we’ll see what
those truths
mean for us.
PRAYER
Let’s pray.
Father we thank You
for Your Word.
We ask You
to open our ears
to hear the truth.
Open our minds
& hearts
to accept the truth.
& give us
the will & ability
to obey
the truth.
In Jesus name.
Amen.
[Transition: 1st let’s talk abt…]
1. The PROMISE of Holy Spirit baptism.
The ppl
in John’s day were:
Waiting.
Excited.
Expecting.
God’s ppl were
living daily
in eager expectation
of the coming
of the Anointed One—
the King of Israel—
Who wld bring in
God’s Messianic kingdom
& save them
frm their enemies.
God sent John
the Baptizer
to preach the gospel
of the kingdom.
To call ppl
to repent—
To turn frm
their sins
& be baptized
for the forgiveness
of sins.
& in Luke 3:15..
Luke tells us
Luke 3:15 (NIV)
15 The people...were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.
But John says:
“I’m not the One
you’re expecting.
“I baptize
“w/ water
“To prepare you
“for the One
“coming after me.”
& in Luke 3:16
John gives some
important details
abt the One
coming after him.
He says:
Luke 3:16 (NIV)
16 ...one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John says
The Messiah
is more powerful
than him.
& the Messiah
will baptize ppl
in a dfrnt way
than John.
The Messiah
will baptize
“Not w/water…
“But w/
the HS
& w/ fire.
& as we’ll see
this promise
of being baptized
w/ the HS
is not just for
John’s audience
but for all
of us too.
The promise of Holy Spirit baptism is for ALL of God’s people.
[Transition:
Let’s talk now
abt...]
2. The MEANING of Holy Spirit Baptism.
What does it mean
To be baptized
w/ the HS?
The Word “baptized
is frm
the Greek word
βαπτίζω.
This word means
to plunge
or immerse
into something.
When used
of water baptism
It means
to plunge or immerse
into water.
When used of
HS baptism
It means
to be plunged
or immersed
into the HS.
John’s saying
“Jesus will
plunge us into
or immerse us in
the HS.”
Now
bfr we talk more abt
What being baptized
w/ the HS means
in Luke’s writings
We 1st need
to talk abt
a similar phrase
we find in
the writings of Paul.
In 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
Paul says
1 Corinthians 12:12–13 (NIV)
12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.
13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free..
A lot of ppl
think Paul’s
talking abt
H.S. baptism
in these verses.
But here
Paul’s talking abt
what we talked abt
last week.
He’s talking abt
being born again
born anew
frm above
in water baptism.
When we’re
baptized in water
we’re not baptized
with the HS
but by the HS.
The HS
baptizes us into
the body
of Christ.
We’re plunged
into the water
& the HS plunges us
into Christ’s body.
We’re immersed
into water
& the HS immerses us
into Christ’s body
& unites us
w/ Christ.
That’s what Paul means
by being baptized
by the HS
into one body.
But when Luke
talks abt
Being baptized
with the HS
He’s not talking abt
being born again.
& as we
closely examine
the Gospel of Luke
& the Book of Acts
We’ll see
Luke uses at least
Five dfrnt phrases
to describe the reality
of being baptized
with the HS.
First:
In Luke 3:16
Luke quotes
John the Baptizer saying
Jesus will…
Luke 3:16 (NIV)
...baptize you with the Holy Spirit...
In Acts 1:4
Luke quotes
the risen Jesus
Saying the same thing
to His disciples.
He tells them
Acts 1:4 (NIV)
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.
Jesus goes on
in verse 5 to explain
what this “gift” is.
He says:
Acts 1:5 (NIV)
“For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
The gift
the Father promised is
the gift of being
baptized
w/ the HS.
& in Acts 1:8
Jesus tells His disciples
what to expect
When they’re baptized
w/ the Holy Spirit.
Jesus says…
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
...you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Notice Jesus’ terminology
changes.
Frm saying
His disciples
will be baptized
w/ the HS
To saying the HS
will come on
His disciples.
So, to be baptized
w/ the HS
is to have
the Holy Spirit
come on you.
& Jesus says:
When the HS
comes on His disciples
they will receive
power.
Power for what?
Power to be
witnesses for Jesus
all over
the world.
Jesus said
the same thing
to the same disciples
in Luke 24:49.
He says:
Luke 24:49 (NIV)
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
What the Father promised
is the gift
of being baptized
w/ the HS.
& Jesus assures
His disciples
“When they’re baptized
w/ the HS—
when the Holy Spirit
comes on them
they’ll be
clothed w/
the power of God
To be
witnesses to the world
abt Jesus.
& just
a few days after
Jesus told His disciples
To go to Jerusalem
& wait to be baptized
w/ the HS
His Father’s promise
was fulfilled.
It was the day
of Pentecost.
120 disciples of Jesus
were gathered together
in one place.
& suddenly
Jesus poured out
the gift
the Father
had gvn to Him
to give to
His disciples.
In Acts 2:2-4
Luke says:
Acts 2:2–4 (NIV)
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Notice Luke says
they were all
filled w/
the HS.
Jesus told his disciples
they wld be
baptized
w/ the HS.
& when
the HS
came on them
Luke says
they were
filled w/
the HS.
So Luke uses the phrases
Baptized w/
came on
& “filled w/”
interchangeably.
In other words:
To be baptized
w/ the HS means
to have the HS
come on you.
& it also means
to be filled w/
the HS.
& when the disciples
were filled w/
the HS
the were also filled
w/ fire
when the tongues of fire
came to rest on
each one of them.
& the HS gave them
the pwr
by enabling them
to speak in
other tongues
Other languages they
had not learned.
& thru those languages
the disciples
became witnesses
for Jesus to ppl
frm all over
the world.
As Luke tells us
in Acts 2:6-12
Acts 2:6–12 (NIV)
6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.
7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?
9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome
11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”
12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
Later on
in Acts 2:33
Peter tells the crowd
what this means.
He says
Jesus has been
Acts 2:33 (NIV)
Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
Jesus went
back to heaven
& sent the gift
the Father promised.
Jesus poured out
the gift of the HS
on God’s ppl.
& in Acts 2:16-18...
Peter says
This was a fulfillment
of God’s Word.
Peter says:
Acts 2:16–18 (NIV)
16 ...this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
17 “ ‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.
Thru the prophet Joel
God promised
Pour out His Spirit
on all ppl.
On both men & women
Young & old.
& they all
wld prophesy.
This is God’s promise
Thru the gift
of the HS
God will equip
all of His ppl
for Spirit-empowered ministry.
A ministry that includes
Prophesying;
Visions;
Dreams;
& other manifestations
of the HS.
This gifting
was only for
a select few
under the
Old Covenant.
The HS
did not come on
all God’s ppl.
But under the
New Covenant
Spirit-empowered ministry
is a gift promised
to everyone.
& that’s what happened
On the day
of Pentecost.
Jesus poured out
the HS on them.
Jesus baptized them
w/ the HS
& w/ fire.
& they received pwr
frm the HS
To speak in other languages
To prophesy
To be witnesses
to the world
for Jesus.
So, to be baptized
w/ the HS
is to receive the gift
the Father promised—
To be filled w/
the HS
To have the HS
come on you.
& to have the HS
poured out
on you.
& in chapters 10 & 11
of the book of Acts
Luke brings all of this terminology together
To make it clear
all those phrases
mean the same thing.
In Acts 10
Luke tells us
The Lord sent Peter
to the house
of a Gentile soldier
named Cornelius.
Peter went to
Cornelius’s house
& preached
the gospel
to a crowd of ppl
who were gathered there
To hear
Peter’s message.
Peter told them:
Jesus is
Lord of all.
That God anointed Jesus
w/ the HS
& power.
& that Jesus
went around doing good
& healing all who were
under the power
of the devil
bcs God
was w/Him.
Peter also told them
Jesus died
by being hung
on a cross.
But God raised Jesus
frm the dead
on the 3rd day.
& Jesus was seen
by Peter
& other witnesses
Who ate & drank w/ Jesus
after His resurrection.
& God appointed
Jesus to be the judge…
of the living
& the dead.
& all who blv in Him
Receive forgiveness of sins
in His name.
In Acts 10:44-48.
Luke tells us
the rest of the story.
Acts 10:44–48 (NIV)
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.
45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on Gentiles.
46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,
47 “Surely no one can stand in the way of their being baptized with water. They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have.”
48 So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
In Acts 11:15
As Peter retells
this whole story
He recalls the words
of the Lord.
Peter says
Acts 11:15–17 (NIV)
15 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning.
16 Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’
17 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”
The (1) gift Peter
& the other disciples received
was the gift of
(2) being baptized
w/ the HS.
The HS (3) came on them
When the gift
of the HS
was (4) poured out
on them.
They received
the (5) promise
& were baptized
w/ the HS.
So, based on everything
we just read
frm Luke & Acts
let me give you
the biblical definition
of what it means
To be baptized
w/ the HS.
To be baptized with the Holy Spirit means: To RECEIVE the gift the Father promised; to be FILLED with the Holy Spirit; to have the Holy Spirit POURED OUT on you; to have the Holy Spirit COME ON you.
For Luke
Those are all
different ways
of saying
the same thing.
That’s the meaning
of HS baptism.
[Transition: Now
let’s turn our attention
to A 3rd & final truth
abt being baptized
w/ the HS.
Let’s talk abt…]
3. The PURPOSE of Holy Spirit baptism.
Based on everything
we’ve read
in Luke
& the book of Acts
My understanding
of the purpose
of being baptized
w/the HS
Is this:
The purpose of Holy Spirit baptism is to receive supernatural SPIRITUAL GIFTS that equip us for Christ-honoring service.
When we’re baptized
w/the HS
We receive
the pwr of God
Thru the gifts
of the HS.
These spiritual gifts
equip us
for Spirit-empowered
service.
& thru these gifts
God empowers us
to be witnesses
who exalt
& honor
the Lord Jesus.
Witnesses
who proclaim
the wonders of God
to the world.
That’s the purpose
of Holy Spirit baptism.
CONCLUSION
we’ll see shortly
This is something we need…
Again & again.
