Are You Ready?
There Is an Old Story About A Lighthouse Keeper
"There is an old story about a lighthouse keeper who worked on a rocky stretch of coastline. Once a month he would receive a new supply of oil to keep the light burning so that ships could safely sail near the rocky coast. One night, though, a woman from a nearby village came and begged him for some oil to keep her family warm. Another time a father asked for some to use in his lamp. Another man needed to lubricate a wheel. Since all the requests seemed legitimate, the lighthouse keeper tried to please everyone and grant the requests of all.
Toward the end of the month, he noticed his supply of oil was dangerously low. Soon it was gone, and one night on the light on the lighthouse went out. As a result, that evening several ships were wrecked and countless lives were lost. When the authorities investigated, the man was very apologetic. He told them he was just trying to be helpful with the oil. Their reply to his excuses, however, was simple and to the point: "You were given oil for one purpose, and one purpose only - to keep that light burning!"
A church faces a similar commission. There is no end to the demands placed on a church’s time and resources. As a result, the foundational purposes of a church must remain supreme."

Open the door for us!’ 12 “But he called back, ‘Believe me, I don’t know you!’

Point 1: The Bridegroom's Delay (Matthew 25:5) - We don't know when Jesus will return, but we know that he will come back. The delay is not a sign of his absence, but a test of our faithfulness. Will we be ready when he comes back?

Point 2: The Foolish Bridesmaids (Matthew 25:3-4, 8-9) - The foolish bridesmaids were unprepared for the bridegroom's arrival. They didn't bring enough oil for their lamps, and when the bridegroom arrived, they were not ready. Are we like the foolish bridesmaids, unprepared for the return of Christ?
Punto 2: Las damas de honor insensatas (Mateo 25:3-4, 8-9) - Las damas de honor insensatas no estaban preparadas para la llegada del novio. Point 3: The Wise Bridesmaids (Matthew 25:4, 6-7, 10-12) - The wise bridesmaids were prepared. They brought extra oil for their lamps and were ready for the bridegroom's arrival. They were accepted into the wedding banquet while the foolish bridesmaids were shut out. Are we like the wise bridesmaids, prepared and ready for the return of Christ?

Point 4: The Call to Action (Matthew 25:13) - Jesus calls us to be ready for his return. We don't know when he will come back, but we can be prepared by living a life of faithfulness and obedience to him. Let us be like the wise bridesmaids, ready and waiting for our Lord's return.

We are faced with hundreds of choices each day. Some big and some small. It’s tempting to believe that the majority of our choices don’t really matter. But in reality, our day to day choices define the men and women we will become and the direction our lives will go: either toward or away from God.
Nos enfrentamos a cientos de opciones cada día. Algunos grandes y otros pequeños. Es tentador creer que la mayoría de nuestras elecciones realmente no importan. Lo que elegimos marca la diferencia.

It’s far too easy to make shortsighted decisions based on our immediate emotions, desires, or circumstances. Like Martha, we can look to what is going to fix our problem now or ease our emotion now, instead of choosing to value what’s important in the long-term. And God is always the more valuable long-term choice. We miss out on growing closer to God when we choose to turn to anything else other than him. God sees beyond the immediate and focuses on what is truly important. When we walk with God, he teaches us to do the same.
Es demasiado fácil tomar decisiones miopes basadas en nuestras emociones, deseos o circunstancias inmediatas. Al igual que Martha, podemos mirar lo que va a solucionar nuestro problema ahora o aliviar nuestra emoción ahora, en lugar de elegir valorar lo que es importante a largo plazo. Do you believe God’s love is better than life? That turning to God is more fulfilling, satisfying and helpful than anything else we can turn to in this life? In order choose to turn to God, first you must identify what you turn to instead of God.

1. Pleasure
1 You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. 2 For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. 3 They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. 4 They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. 5 They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!
1. Placer
1 Pero marca esto: Habrá tiempos terribles en los últimos días. 2 Las personas serán amantes de sí mismas, amantes del dinero, jactanciosas, orgullosas, abusivas, desobedientes a sus padres, ingratas, impías, 3 sin amor, implacables, calumniosas, sin autocontrol, brutales, no amantes de lo bueno, 4 traicioneras, temerarias, engreídas, amantes del placer en lugar de amantes de Dios, 5 teniendo una forma de piedad pero negando su poder. Not all decisions are created equal. Usually, there’s one that requires work, discipline, and faith. And then, there’s the other one that’s easier, instantly gratifying, and just feels better. Simply put, we choose God or choose pleasure. In today’s society, there are countless forms of pleasure! TV, movies, pornography, impurity, shopping, sleeping, drinking, smoking, overeating, under-eating, indulging in emotion, working out, video games, or even work… That’s just to name a few! Whatever form of pleasure you turn to, it is always a cheap substitute for a close relationship with God.

Whenever we turn to cheap pleasure, we are missing a chance to love God. Where do you turn when life is busy and work is stressful? When you are afraid, lonely, sick, sad, angry, or just tired? Pleasure can seem like a quick fix for our troubles, but the good feeling is short lived.When you choose to love pleasure instead of God, the result is an unspiritual hangover, which feels like guilt, regret, fear of exposure, isolation or apathy. This often leads to indulging in a downward spiral of pleasure, because it leaves us empty and just wanting more. God is meant to fill that emptiness.
Cada vez que recurrimos al placer barato, estamos perdiendo la oportunidad de amar a Dios. ¿A dónde acudes cuando la vida está ocupada y el trabajo es estresante? ¿Cuando tienes miedo, estás solo, enfermo, triste, enojado o simplemente cansado? El placer puede parecer una solución rápida para nuestros problemas, pero la buena sensación es de corta duración. 2. Attention
5 “Everything they do is for show. On their arms they wear extra wide prayer boxes with Scripture verses inside, and they wear robes with extra long tassels. 6 And they love to sit at the head table at banquets and in the seats of honor in the synagogues. 7 They love to receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi.’
One form of pleasure we turn to instead of God, that deserves it’s own section, is attention. When we need attention to be happy, to be secure or to function we become an attention addict. We change who we are to get the attention we desire. When we choose attention over God we end up having multiple lives, acting different around family, friends, spouses and coworkers because we constantly are trying to get a attention from different types of people. This life of deceit and compromise leads to guilt and insecurity, because we never are truly able to be ourselves. Our focus is on people instead of on God. When we choose to make people happy instead of God, it’s frustrating, because we can never make everyone happy.

2. Atención

3. Dinero
13»Nadie puede servir a dos señores. O odiarás a uno y amarás al otro, o te dedicarás a uno y despreciarás al otro. No puedes servir tanto a Dios como al dinero".

We need money to survive and function in modern society, but it often replaces God. One of the most common arguments in marriage and one of the taboo topics to talk about with friends is personal finances. Have you ever gotten angry when discussing finances or when someone has tried to help you with your finances? Why? We often have too close of a bond and reliance on money.
Necesitamos dinero para sobrevivir y funcionar en la sociedad moderna, pero a menudo reemplaza a Dios. We choose to rely on it for comfort, security and feeling of power, but it ends up controlling how we live. Families have been torn apart because of the endless pursuit money and the false security we think it provides. The pursuit of money replaces relationships. And when we choose to get security from money instead of God, it replaces our relationship with him.

4. Control
5 This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. 6 They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land. 7 “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. 8 They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
4. Control

Life is unpredictable and throws a lot at us. One way we can respond to the challenges is by relying on ourselves instead of God. If life isn’t going as planned, instead of asking God for help or looking to his word for direction, we take control and try to make something happen on our own.
La vida es impredecible y nos arroja mucho. Una forma en que podemos responder a los desafíos es confiando en nosotros mismos en lugar de Dios. Si la vida no va según lo planeado, en lugar de pedirle ayuda a Dios o buscar su palabra en busca de dirección, tomamos el control y tratamos de hacer que algo suceda por nuestra cuenta.
Wanting to control our lives is rooted in fear and unbelief. Fear that the worst is going to happen and unbelief that God is going to help guide us through it. When we turn to control instead of God we end up tired, frustrated and lonely. Tired because we aren’t designed to rely only on ourselves. Frustrated because we get stressed and stuck when we don’t know what to do. And lonely because if we won’t ask God for help, we won’t ask others either.
Querer controlar nuestras vidas tiene sus raíces en el miedo y la incredulidad. Miedo de que lo peor va a suceder e incredulidad de que Dios nos va a ayudar a guiarnos a través de ello. Cuando nos volvemos al control en lugar de a Dios, terminamos cansados, frustrados y solos. Cansados porque no estamos diseñados para confiar solo en nosotros mismos. God wants us to believe in his plan for us and to trust that he will guide us through any situation. When we trust God, we worry less, because we believe that when we follow his word he will come through.
Are you tired, frustrated or lonely? When you face challenges, worry, stress, do you choose to control or do you rely on God?
Dios quiere que creamos en su plan para nosotros y que confiemos en que él nos guiará a través de cualquier situación. Cuando confiamos en Dios, nos preocupamos menos, porque creemos que cuando seguimos su palabra, Él saldrá adelante.

Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. 7 Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’ 8 For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.”
5. Reglas

Rules and laws exist to keep us safe, but they can also keep us from thinking for ourselves. We can choose to follow religious rules, because it requires less thought, emotion and care than building a relationship with God. If we obey the rules we can feel a sense of security, accomplishment and feel like we remain a ‘good person’. We make up all types of rules to make us feel good about ourselves. If I go to church then me and God are close. If I read and pray daily then God and I are close. If I do everything but sex with someone then I’m not sinning. If I drink and get buzzed it’s ok as long a I’m not throwing up. If I think evil thoughts it’s ok as long as don’t do them. You get the idea.
Las reglas y leyes existen para mantenernos seguros, pero también pueden evitar que pensemos por nosotros mismos. Podemos elegir seguir las reglas religiosas, porque requiere menos pensamiento, emoción y cuidado que construir una relación con Dios. Si obedecemos las reglas, podemos sentir una sensación de seguridad, logro y sentir que seguimos siendo una "buena persona". Inventamos todo tipo de reglas para hacernos sentir bien con nosotros mismos. Si voy a la iglesia, entonces Dios y yo estamos cerca. Si leo y oro diariamente, entonces Dios y yo estamos cerca. Si hago todo menos sexo con alguien, entonces no estoy pecando. Si bebo y me zumba, está bien, siempre y cuando no esté vomitando. Si tengo malos pensamientos, está bien, siempre y cuando no los hagas. Entiendes la idea.
When we choose to live by rules we replace a relationship with God with religious obligation and trade heart for him with duty. A relationship with God is exactly that, a relationship, not a set rules to be followed. When we whittle our relationship with God down to things to do, there is no relationship, because there is no heart behind it. The bible is a guide to help us to get close to God, so when that is the motivation for reading it, it will result in walking with God.

La Biblia es una guía para ayudarnos a acercarnos a Dios, así que cuando esa es la motivación para leerla, resultará en caminar con Dios.
