Text: Proverbs 14:1, 24:3-4
Proverbs 14:1 KJV 1900
Every wise woman buildeth her house: But the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.
Intro: In Matthew 7, Jesus tells the story of two men. A foolish man and a wise man. If you are familiar with the song you remember that the house on the sand went “SMASH”. While the house build on the rock stood firm. The moral of the story was plain, “Jesus is the Rock on which we should build the house of our life.
Solomon is teaching the same timeless truth. Two primary differences stand out. First, in chapter 14 our builder is a mother. Who either builds or tears down. Whose attitude, words, and good days or bad is either building or weakening the structure of her home.
House or Home
It does take a mother to recognize the difference between a house and a home. You see the men of Matthew 7 were building structures to support proper living. While a mother builds a dwelling for hearts, and excitement. A father provides direction, a mother provides guidance. A father provides defense, a mother provides healing.
This points to the second primary difference of this passage to the builders of the New Testament. That is, the destruction is not so sudden. You see Solomon tells the story that sometimes destruction can come not as a result of harsh winds, and shards of lightning. Sometimes destruction simple falls down around you slowly, daily, methodically. In fact we expect destruction to come as one crashing movement. We rarely take into account that erosion comes over time.
You see the men of Matthew were building for the moment of impact, this mother was building for the duration of a lifetime. This makes the words of Proverbs 24:3-4 of great value.
A Builder Or a Wrecker
As I watched them tear a building down
A gang of men in a busy town
With a ho-heave-ho, and a lusty yell
They swung a beam and the side wall fell
I asked the foreman, "Are these men skilled,
And the men you'd hire if you wanted to build?"
He gave a laugh and said, "No, indeed,
Just common labor is all I need."
"I can easily wreck in a day or two,
What builders have taken years to do."
And I thought to myself, as I went my way
Which of these roles have I tried to play?
Am I a builder who works with care,
Measuring life by rule and square?
Am I shaping my work to a well-made plan
Patiently doing the best I can?
Or am I a wrecker who walks to town
Content with the labor of tearing down?
"O Lord let my life and my labors be
That which will build for eternity!"

Solomon teaches us the building materials that will last a lifetime.
I. Through Wisdom a House is Built
Proverbs 24:3 KJV 1900
Through wisdom is an house builded; And by understanding it is established:
Exp. We understand that wisdom is that quality that tells a mother and a father to build instead of tear down. When you see couples that are seemingly distracted with that which doesn’t matter you see the results of those that lack wisdom.
Satan is sneaky, he pulls the mind off of what is really important, he distracts with the mundane or the seemingly special. He will lead a family to chase after that which is unimportant but attractive just long enough to bring them to neglect.
The great need of every parent in this auditorium today is wisdom. The wisdom to know that which truly matters, wisdom on how to broach difficult times, in marriage, parenting, and even disaster. Fads and fashion fade away, entertainment and hobbies are forgotten, but wisdom builds a life that will last.
Arg. The biblical definition for the word wisdom breaks down to simply mean to know how to use the knowledge he gives. You say wait why only his knowledge, because his knowledge is sound, trustworthy, and long lasting.
I love the definition for the word build (builded) it means, “assembling and combining parts. You see wisdom knows not only how to build, but what parts should be allowed in the construction. Wisdom knows that there are certain habits, that shouldn’t be in our lives and certain things that should.
There is no greater knowledge is to train your children to trust the Lord Jesus Christ.
Proverbs 9:10 KJV 1900
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: And the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
Consider with me the wiseman and foolish man from the beginning of the message.
Matthew 7:21 KJV 1900
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
The context was who gets let into the kingdom of heaven. According to Jesus it is the one that doeth the will of my father.
John 6:40 KJV 1900
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:29 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
You see we are those that without Christ we will see wisdom and want it… We will see the results of understanding and desire it… But wisdom does not happen apart from a relationship with the Father thru Jesus Christ.
Apart from him your eternal soul will be plucked down and you will know the destruction that is promised the one whose house is built on the sand.
Church should be in our lives.
Godly Friends should be in our lives.
Time together should be in our lives.
And the things that tear at these great truths should be removed. Wisdom builds with the right parts.
II. By Understanding a House is Established.
Exp. Isn’t it good to settle down. We don’t know much of settling down in our culture with all the running around and all the activities. We as people if we are not careful can mistake a full schedule as a full life. Some of the greatest memories of my life have nothing to do with where we were or how much dad paid to get us their. Many of my fondest memories were at home, settled in.
The promise of Establishing brings with it the security of knowing your life doesn’t have to fall apart. Of knowing that your family will be safe and sound. Secure and together. Probably the greatest gift ever given to me by my mother was to know that if everything fell apart she would always be with my father. This was a promise made again and again by my parents. We were reminded time after time that no matter what mommy and daddy are together.
Scripture says that this is no accident this is not something that happens for a few lucky ones. This understanding that your home can be established can be for you today. You can have a home that will go the distance, but it does not happen by having the same stuff your friends or neighbors have. It doesn’t come from closets full of the nicest clothes. And many times those that need understanding the most trade it for the newest car.
Arg. Understanding is the ability to know how knowledge works. You see if knowledge is a hammer Understanding is know how to swing it. Wisdom is swinging. Understanding is the ability to see the end result of sin, compromise, and apathy. Understanding is seeing your family ten years from today based on the choices being made right now.
Marriages are not protected by refusing to leave your spouse, marriages are protected by the understanding of what flirtation, isolation, and drifting apart will do to you.
A mother of understanding is one that sees the friends her children are around and call out what she sees. A mother of understanding stops the destructive relationship before it gets off the ground.
That momma's look...
She fights for what is right no matter how many times she is badgered, misunderstood, and even badmouthed. She fights for what she knows because she understands what will happen.
III. By Knowledge a House is Filled.
Proverbs 24:4 KJV 1900
And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled With all precious and pleasant riches.
Exp. Solomon who had houses of gold, wanted this instead. David who was victorious and powerful, wanted this instead. Rehoboam who was popular and applauded would one day wish he had this instead.
By knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches: The blessing of building a home with God’s wisdom, God’s understanding, and God’s knowledge will bring precious and pleasant riches in the spiritual sense and often in the material sense. God’s blessing is on the home that seeks and honors His wisdom.
David Guzik, Proverbs, David Guzik’s Commentaries on the Bible (Santa Barbara, CA: David Guzik, 2017), Pr 24:3–4.
The precious jewels that fill the house are a harmonious, loving family and a sense of security and stability.

I can assure you that if you gain what God is promising here you will care very little about money, power, and fame.
Arg. I want to remind you that God has very specific rules about knowledge.
1. Not just any knowledge will do
2. Knowledge comes from fearing God.
3. Knowledge comes from God’s Word.
