Intro: Mother’s Day

Today is Mother’s Day
I want to share a brief blessing and encouragement
Luke 1:28 ESV
And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!”
When Gabriel visited Mary to tell her that she was going to be the mother of the Messiah he called the “highly favored one.”
The Roman Catholic’s translate that “Full of Grace.”
That is a more accurate description of what is going there
Mary was full of grace
What’s interesting is the Greek Word is Charitoo
It’s where we get our word Charity from
It’s only used one other place in the NT
Mary was full of grace not by what she did or who she was, but as a charitable act by God
Grace is getting what we don’t deserve
All believers are full of grace because its been given by the Lord
That act of grace was His Son Jesus Christ
Moms, you are full of grace this morning and God sees you as high favored
For God so loved the World He sent His son
What did he send his son for?
To die for our sins and grant us eternal life

Read Matthew 27:27-31

Transition
Jesus has gone through trials of both the sanhedrin and Pilate
He has been sentenced to death
Through the end of this chapter he will endure the cross
Matthew doesn’t give us a lot of detail of the suffering Jesus endured on the cross
What’s interesting is that 800 years before the crucifixion the Prophet described in vivid detail what would happen
Isaiah 53 almost gives is a blow by blow of what will happen
Included in that description is an explanation of why it happened
As we go through todays passage I want to place Is 53 side by side
Through that we will see why God so loved the World

Scourged & Mocked vs. 26-31

God so loved the world that he allowed his beloved son to be scourged and mocked
Pilate releases Barabbas and the Roman soldiers take Jesus to the Governors headquarters called the Praetorium
First they scourged Him
What is scourging?
It is blows that come from a whip with many leather strands, each having sharp pieces of bone or metal at the ends.
It reduced the back to raw flesh, and it was not unusual for a criminal to die from a scourging, even before crucifixion.
They then took him inside and the soldiers mocked him by treating him as a defeated king
They put a purple robe on flesh torn back
They twisted a crown of thorns on his head
The prophet Isaiah told us that he would be despised and rejected
Isaiah 53:3 ESV
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Jesus had to suffer the shame as part of the being the substitute for our sin
The Roman soldiers mocked him
They put a scarlet robe on him and twisted a crown of thorns
The kneeled before him and declared “Hail king of the Jews”
The prophet Isaiah tells us why he had to go through that
Isaiah 53:5 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
His mistreatment brought us relief in so many areas
The physical suffering brought us forgiveness
The chastisement brought peace
The stripes he got during the scourging brought us spiritual healing
Those wounds he endured made it possible for our guilt and shame to be removed
Spiritual healing is much more important than physical healing

Crushed for Our Sins vs. 32-44

God so loved the world He crushed his Son for our sins
On the road to the cross, known as the Via De la Rosa, Jesus was too weak to carry the cross
The soldiers grabbed an able looking man out of the crowd, Simon the Cyrene
The destination was Golgotha, otherwise known as Calvary, which means Place of the Skull,
Crucifixions took place Outside the gates of Jerusalem at a busy crossroads
It was done this way to get as much affect as possible
To help the oncoming pain Jesus was offered wine mixed with Gall
This had a pain numbing effect
Jesus refused to fully experience the pain
vs. 35 They crucified him
Remember that Matthew is writing to a Jewish audience
They would’ve known that this is where Jesus was laid upon the cross and nailed to it
He would hang on the cross from 9 am to 3pm.
Having a back that has been torn open by the scourging, this was vary painful
He would have to support himself by pushing up on the nails driven through his feet so he could get oxygen into his lungs
Isaiah sheds some light on this
Isaiah 53:4 ESV
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
It’s important to remember that Jesus was sent to do this by His Father
It was all part of his redemption plan
God so loved the world he allowed his son to be smitten
vs. 35b-44 Mocked on the Cross
While Jesus was hanging on the cross he was continually mocked and chastised
The guards gambled for his garments
The sign King of the Jews was meant to be ridicule by Pilate
Everyone who passed by him on those busy crossroads mocked him
“Save yourself if you’re the Son of God”
The religious leaders mocked his Trust in God
Hanging on the cross, all alone, He endured the pain, suffering, and mocking of the people

An Offering for Guilt vs. 45-56

God so loved the world that He accepted His son as an offering for our guilt
At noon, when the sun should be at its zenith, everything went dark
For three hours there was darkness
This darkness was especially remarkable because it happened during a full moon – during which time Passover was always held – and during a full moon it is impossible that there be a natural eclipse of the sun.
The remarkable darkness all over the earth showed the agony of creation itself in the Creator’s suffering.
Spurgeon said: The darkness is the symbol of the wrath of God which fell on those who slew his only begotten Son.
God was angry, and his frown removed the light of day
Phlegon, Roman historian wrote: “In the fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was an extraordinary eclipse of the sun: at the sixth hour, the day turned into dark night, so that the stars in heaven were seen; and there was an earthquake.”
After three more hours Jesus cried out “My God, why have you forsaken me?”
At that moment the sin of humanity was placed on Jesus, and God in his holiness turned away
Jesus had known great pain and suffering (both physical and emotional) during His life.
Yet He had never known separation from His Father.
At this moment, He experienced what He had not yet ever experienced.
There was a significant sense in which Jesus rightly felt forsaken by the Father at this moment.
It was the thing he feared most
Isaiah 53:10 ESV
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Isaiah 53:6 ESV
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
And yielded up His spirit: No one took Jesus’ life from Him.
Jesus, in a manner unlike any other man, yielded up His spirit.
Death had no righteous hold over the sinless Son of God.
He stood in the place of sinners, but never was or became a sinner Himself.
The veil was what separated the holy place from the most holy place in the temple.
It was a vivid demonstration of the separation between God and man.
Notably, the veil was torn from top to bottom, and it was God who did the tearing.

Buried vs. 57-66

God so loved the world that he let His son be buried amongst the Wicked
vs. 57-61 Jospeh Buries Jesus
Isaiah 53:9 ESV
And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
vs. 62-66 Religious Leaders are nervous
