Introduction: Memorable Mother’s Day—Breakfast in Bed
One of my Favorites—a nap
Church services—wasn’t always focused on sermon—but the rest I experienced for a few minutes
Text - Mark 6:30-32
Mark 6:30–32 NLT
30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught. 31 Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. 32 So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.
Main Idea
Resting invites peace to your life.
Transition:
1 Kings 18:22–24 NLT
22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only prophet of the Lord who is left, but Baal has 450 prophets. 23 Now bring two bulls. The prophets of Baal may choose whichever one they wish and cut it into pieces and lay it on the wood of their altar, but without setting fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood on the altar, but not set fire to it. 24 Then call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by setting fire to the wood is the true God!” And all the people agreed.
First Point (Ed)

Doing Good is Hard Work

Mark 6:30 NLT
30 The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught.
The mission of God to reach people with the Good News of hope is hard work.
The apostles (Jesus’ closest followers) were sent out by Jesus to tell “everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God (Mark 6:13).
The story of Elijah
The prophets of Baal did their best, but Baal was unable to answer.
Elijah prepared the altar ( 12 stones representing Israel)
He had the crowd pour water on the altar.
He called on God.
1 Kings 18:38–39 NLT
38 Immediately the fire of the Lord flashed down from heaven and burned up the young bull, the wood, the stones, and the dust. It even licked up all the water in the trench! 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell face down on the ground and cried out, “The Lord—he is God! Yes, the Lord is God!”
Doing good is hard work!
Second Point (Angela)

Aloneness is Different than Loneliness

King Ahab and Queen Jezebel went after Elijah to kill him.
1 Kings 19:3–4 NLT
3 Elijah was afraid and fled for his life. He went to Beersheba, a town in Judah, and he left his servant there. 4 Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.”
Notes
Jesus withdrew from the crowds with the purpose of communing with the Father—to be renewed to gain strength—this is healthy
Elijah was not in a healthy place — lonely he separated himself from others
Third Point (Angela)

Quiet and Rest are Essential for Restoration

1 Kings 19:5–6 NLT
5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree. But as he was sleeping, an angel touched him and told him, “Get up and eat!” 6 He looked around and there beside his head was some bread baked on hot stones and a jar of water! So he ate and drank and lay down again.
