Good News For Moms

Happy Mothers Day!
What a great morning we’ve had already.
We celebrate moms today.
If you are a mom, we celebrate you.
Maybe you have biological children.
Maybe you have foster or adoptive children.
Maybe you have spiritual children.
We honor you.
I’m not a mom.
I could never be a mom.
But as a dad I can say, moms have one of the hardest jobs in the world.
Sacrificial.
Tireless.
Thankless.
Often overwhelming.
But also rewarding.
Beautiful.
Inspiring.
I have good news for you this morning, you aren’t alone.
As we near the end of our journey thru Luke I want us to look at a very important character in the story of Jesus - his mother, Mary.
Mary Mother of Jesus

Godly Moms Surrender To God’s Will

Luke 1:26–38 CSB
26 In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin engaged to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was deeply troubled by this statement, wondering what kind of greeting this could be. 30 Then the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Now listen: You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. 33 He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be, since I have not had sexual relations with a man?” 35 The angel replied to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 And consider your relative Elizabeth—even she has conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called childless. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 “See, I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Do Not Be Afraid
Hear that moms.
There is so much that you may not understand.
Don’t be afraid to be the mom that your child needs.
So often you may feel overwhelmed or unsure, don’t be afraid to be the godly mom you are called to be.
Surrender to God’s will.
I am the LORD’s servant.
Godly moms surrender to God’s will.
Proverbs 3:5–6 CSB
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.
That’s been Heather’s life verse.
That is surrender.
Trusting God.
Not relying on your own understanding.
Following the path that God has marked out for you.
There are times that the path is difficult, but your children need to see walk it out.
Your kids need to see you trust in valleys and on the mountaintop.
There is blessing for you and your family when you walk in surrender.
The blessing may come after a storm, but the storm will give way to sunshine.
So you can be hopeful.

Godly Moms Are Hopeful

Luke 1:46–55 CSB
46 And Mary said: My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 because he has looked with favor on the humble condition of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, 49 because the Mighty One has done great things for me, and his name is holy. 50 His mercy is from generation to generation on those who fear him. 51 He has done a mighty deed with his arm; he has scattered the proud because of the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has toppled the mighty from their thrones and exalted the lowly. 53 He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering his mercy 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he spoke to our ancestors.
Do you see this hope?
God will do what he said he would do.
As Mary sings this song she is remembering the waiting, she is remembering the past promise, and she is looking into the future with hope.
You may have prayed for the deliverance of your children from bondage, sin, addiction… keep holding onto hope.
Sing songs over your children.
Sing songs of hope over your children.
Sing songs of deliverance over your children.
Sing songs salvation over your children.
Weeping may last thru the night but joy comes in the morning.
Sing over your children.
Prophecy over your children.
Speak life over your children.
Declare the Word of God over your children.
There is hope.
There is hope.
There is hope.
Go ahead and magnify the LORD, go ahead and praise the LORD, you may not see the fulfillment but God has already set it in motion.
Do not give up hope.
Hold onto the promise.

Godly Moms Hold Onto The Promise

Luke 2:15–19 CSB
15 When the angels had left them and returned to heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go straight to Bethlehem and see what has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 They hurried off and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby who was lying in the manger. 17 After seeing them, they reported the message they were told about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary was treasuring up all these things in her heart and meditating on them.
Mary treasured all these things in her heart.
She held on to the promise.
Born in a manger - but a King.
Surrounded by shepherds - but angels bow.
Livestock nearby - their creator nursing on his mother’s breast.
It might not look like much, but she held onto the promise.
She treasured the mundane moments.
She treasured the ordinary.
She treasured the unusual events.
She treasured the extraordinary.
Because they were all part of journey.
Don’t overlook the long nights and don’t forget the special moments - they are all part of the journey.
Just hold onto the promise lead them in the faith.

Godly Moms Raise Their Children In The Faith

Luke 2:22 CSB
22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were finished, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
THEY BROUGHT HIM
Listen moms, you have a spiritual role to play in the development of your child’s faith.
They didn’t just point them to God.
They didn’t just point them to church.
They brought Jesus to present him to the LORD.
Circumcision, religious ritual, spiritual significance.
They brought him.
Mom’s don’t expect your children to find their way to Jerusalem on their own.
Be obedient to God, and Bring your children to God.
Raise them in the faith.
Their faith is more important than their grades, than their sports, than their social status, than their pleasure.
Take them to church.
Worship with them.
Pray with them.
Read the scripture with them.
As long as they are under your roof they are, by God’s design, a captive audience - raise them in the faith.
If they are grown, they may tune you out but the can’t silence the Spirit - God hears your prayers, keep faith front and center.
You won’t be perfect, but don’t give up.
Mary wasn’t perfect.
Seriously, look at this.

Godly Moms Aren’t Perfect

Luke 2:41–52 CSB
41 Every year his parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the festival. 43 After those days were over, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. 44 Assuming he was in the traveling party, they went a day’s journey. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. 46 After three days, they found him in the temple sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all those who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” 49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked them. “Didn’t you know that it was necessary for me to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what he said to them. 51 Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.
Godly moms aren’t perfect, Mary left her son behind in Jerusalem for a whole day.
Don’t beat yourself up when you mess up.
You will not get everything right.
You will make mistakes.
If you need to apologize, apologize.
But don’t for one second believe that God made a mistake.
Be godly even when you aren’t perfect.
What does that mean?
Keep looking to Jesus.
Keep growing in the faith.
Keep praying and worshipping and trusting Jesus.
You won’t be a perfect mom, what even is a perfect mom (I promise, those mommy bloggers aren’t perfect and the aura of perfection just leads to anxiety) you won’t be a perfect mom, but you can be a godly mom - and that is what your kids need more than your perfection.
And there will be times where being a mom is overwhelming, listen, don’t self medicate, don’t find your peace in a glass or more of wine, your children need you, so you need the church.

Godly Moms Need Comfort & Community

Luke 23:44-49 , John 19:26-27
Luke 23:44–49 CSB
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three, 45 because the sun’s light failed. The curtain of the sanctuary was split down the middle. 46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.” Saying this, he breathed his last. 47 When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, “This man really was righteous!” 48 All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests. 49 But all who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
John 19:26–27 CSB
When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.
Mary needed comfort and community.
Her son is being publicly executed.
She is watching her 33 year old son have nails driven in his hands and feet, a crown of thorns on his head, he’s being mocked, he’s being laughed at, he’s hanging naked on a cross.
I know I’ve felt the sorrow when my children hurt.
I know Heather has felt anguish over her children.
Mom’s know what it feels like to want to take the pain away - to literally wish it was you who was hurting instead of your children.
Mary was broken because Jesus was being broken.
She needed comfort and community.
Mom, you need a community that will comfort you, encourage you, strengthen you, instruct you, help you.
Mom - you need the church.
You need other moms praying with you, for you, for your kids, for you families, with your kids.
God moms are praying moms.

Godly Moms Are Praying Moms

Acts 1:12–14 CSB
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, which is near Jerusalem—a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they arrived, they went to the room upstairs where they were staying: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 They all were continually united in prayer, along with the women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
Here we see Mary, relieved, her son resurrected, gathering with the church, continuing to be faithful, continuing to be believe, continuing to trust.
Jesus promised the Holy Spirit.
Mary prayed.
Never underestimate the power of a praying mom.
Never underestimate the power of prayer, mom.
Never underestimate the prayers you pray over your children.
Never underestimate God’s ability to work.
Never stop praying.
Let your children hear your prayers over them.
Lay your hands on your kids and call their names out in prayer.
Pray.
Pray.
Pray.
Cry out for you children.
Culture is calling their name.
Don’t let the voice of culture be louder than then cries of prayer from your lips and your heart.
Mom, God has given you His Spirit, be a Spirit-Empowered mom.

Godly Moms Are Empowered By The Spirit

Acts 2:1–4 CSB
When the day of Pentecost had arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like that of a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were staying. They saw tongues like flames of fire that separated and rested on each one of them. Then they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues,A as the Spirit enabled them.
Pray Spirit empowered prayer over your children.
Pray Spirit filled prayers over your children.
Holy Spirit fill this room - fill these moms - fill their homes - and empower their prayers and empower their lives.
Be warrior moms - battling against hell for your family.
In Jesus name!
