Read John 15:1-11
John 15:1–11 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

2. Starting Point: Jesus and the Father are in Relationship

a) The Father cuts off and prunes the branches from the vine

John 15:1–2 ESV
1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.

i) The branches that don’t bear fruit are removed

ii) The branches that do bear fruit are pruned so that they may bear more fruit

b) Jesus has the authority to declare someone “clean”

John 15:3 ESV
3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

3. Christians Abide in Jesus and Bear Fruit

a) We are fully dependent upon Jesus.

John 15:4–5 ESV
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

i) We can do nothing apart from Jesus

ii) Abide – dwell, remain

Exodus 29:45 ESV
45 I will dwell among the people of Israel and will be their God.
Jesus declaring divinity here

iii) Ways to Abide – (spiritual disciplines) Pray, Listen, spend time, linger in his presence, Bible, meditating on scripture, writing out prayers, listing things we are thankful for, journaling, singing, reading a Psalm out loud, simply marveling at his creation, fasting

b) If we do not abide in Jesus, we are not Christians

John 15:6 ESV
6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

c) God will provide whatever is needed so that we may bear fruit

John 15:7–8 ESV
7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Praying in the name of Jesus is more than just ending a prayer in His name. Acting in someone’s name means acting according to their will, desires, and wishes. It means all glory goes to the one in whose name one acts. Praying in the name of Jesus means praying according to the will and desires of Christ and when doing so, whatever we ask for will be done. Not to give us whatever we want but to accomplish His will in which we are abiding.

i) Bearing fruit glorifies God

John 15:8 ESV
8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.

ii) Bearing Fruit proves we are disciples of Jesus

(1) Saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus
(2) This does not contradict that. This explains what it means to be a Christian. To be one who is saved.

4. Obedience Produces Results

a) Jesus demands our obedience

John 15:9–10 ESV
9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

b) Obedience results in joy-filled living

John 15:11 ESV
11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

5. Conclusion

a) As Christians, we must abide and bear fruit.

b) Pruning is necessary and will result in even more fruit.

c) God will provide all you need to accomplish His purposes.

d) Our obedience in abiding and bearing fruit will result in a joy-filled life.
