2 Timothy 3:17 NKJV
17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Heard how vital a regular, passionate intake of Scripture is so vital to us
We are going to see another aspect of this process of how we become thoroughly equipped to follow Christ

Better Together

When it comes to following Jesus, while it is an individual decision to follow Him, no one effectively follows Him alone
In order for us to be thoroughly equipped to follow Jesus, we are better when we do it together for the following reasons:

1. It’s God’s Design

We were designed by God Himself to live in community

With God
Genesis 1:26–28 NKJV
26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 2:7 NKJV
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 2:18 NKJV
18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”
With each other
Throughout OT, we see people living together in communities
Jesus chose 12
Mark 3:13–14 NKJV
13 And He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,
Luke 6:12–13 NKJV
12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles:
Things to notice:
Jesus did not choose 5,000, 4,000 or some large group
Jesus did not choose 1
Jesus chose 12
Why?
Not because He needed them to save mankind
But because He wanted them
Because He designed them to have a relationship with Him
They needed Him
They needed each other
Because He designed them to have relationships with each other
Reason He instituted the church
So they could be on mission…together
So they could grow in their knowledge of Him…together
So they could take care of each other…together
So they could live life in Him…together

2. We Need Others

Others equip us

Ephesians 4:11–14 NKJV
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

Others Encourage Us

Hebrews 10:24–25 NKJV
24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

3. Others Need Us

For many of us, our tendency is to “go it alone”
To “keep it inside”
To “suck it up and deal with it”
To “man up”

Barnabas

But down deep, to have someone who “gets it” to come and say a word of encouragement to you often means more than we like to let on
You may be that guy who “gets it”
Who the Lord wants to use to build up others
With a word of encouragement
Or just you being there
“Ministry of Presence”

Now What?

We were designed to live life together

God’s great design
It’s who He is
It’s who He made us to be

Thus, we follow Jesus better when we do it together

Because we need others
To equip us
To encourage us
Because others need us
To equip
To encourage
