Let’s turn together
in our Bibles
to Luke’s gospel.
Luke....
chapter 3.
We’re gonna read
verses 15-16.
Luke 3:15-16.
When you find that

The Title
of today’s teaching is
Holy Spirit Baptism.
This is part three
of this series.
In Luke 3:15-16
the Scriptures say:
Luke 3:15–16 (NIV)
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah.
16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
You may be seated.
Three weeks ago
I opened up a can
& now
worms are everywhere.
The more I study
the subject of HS baptism
the more I see
we need to
We might just
be in this series
until the Lord
comes again.
So far
in this series
we’ve learned that
The Promise
of HS baptism
is for all
God’s ppl.
We learned that
the meaning
of HS baptism is
To RECEIVE the gift
the Father promised;
to be FILLED w/ the HS;
to have the HS
POURED OUT on you;
& to have
the Holy Spirit
COME ON you.
For Luke
those are all
dfrnt ways
of saying
the same thing.
& we saw that
the Purpose of
HS Baptism is
to receive supernatural SPIRITUAL GIFTS
that equip us
for Christ-honoring service.
Last week
we started to talk abt
the PARTICULARS
or the practical aspects
of HS baptism.
We saw that
HS baptism happens
after water baptism.
& HS baptism happens
thru PRAYER
& the Apostles
PLACING their hands
on people.
The Lord Jesus
gave the Apostles
the unique authority
to communicate
the gift of the HS
thru prayer
& laying on
of their hands.
& we ended w/
the question:
If HS baptism happens
Thru prayer
& the apostles
Placing their hands
on ppl—
what does that mean
for us?
The Apostles
are no longer w/ us.
So how do we
apply this
in the Church?
To answer that question
we’ve gotta start w/
an understanding of
the authority Jesus
gave the Apostles
to build the Church.
So today
we’ll talk abt
Apostolic Authority
& how that authority
was passed on
frm Jesus
to the Apostles
as the 1st leaders
in the Church.

Lord
We thank You
for Your
precious Word.
Enlighten our minds
& hearts
to learn
& receive the Truth.
& give us grace
to obey the truth.
In Jesus name.

The authority Jesus gave
the APOSTLES.
Luke introduces us
to this truth in
Luke 6:13-16.
After he tells us
that Jesus
went away frm the crowds
went up a mountain
& spent all night
in prayer to God
Luke tells us:
Luke 6:13–16 (NIV)
13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:
14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew,
15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,
16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
Notice Jesus called
all of His disciples
to Him.
& then.............
frm among
the disciples
He chose 12 men
whom he designated
or appointed
to the office
of Apostle.
Simon Peter
Andrew
James & John.
Philip
Bartholomew
Matthew & Thomas.
Another James
Another Simon
& two men named
Judas.
These 12 men
were set apart by Jesus
to be Apostles—
Men who were
sent out by Jesus
to represent Him
& speak on His behalf
abt the kingdom
of God.
These men
were the 1st
official leaders
in the Church.
& as we’ll see
Jesus chose
to build His Church
on these 12 men.
Well, at least 11
of these 12 men
bcs one of the 12 Apostles
betrayed Jesus
& was replaced
by a man named Matthias.
Lukes talks abt this
in Acts 1:15-26.
He says
Acts 1:15–26 (ESV)
15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said,
16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.
17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.”
18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “ ‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “ ‘Let another take his office.’
21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen
25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.”
26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
So Judas Iscariot
betrayed Jesus
forfeited his
Apostolic office
& was replaced by
Matthias.
He became one of
the 12 Apostles
on whom Jesus
will build His Church.
Now
A few days after
Jesus appointed
the original 12
to the office of Apostle
In Luke 9:1-6
Luke tells us...
Luke 9:1–6 (NKJV)
1 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
3 And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.
4 “Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.
5 And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”
6 So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
Jesus gives
the 12 men
He’d appointed to
the Apostolic Office
the power & authority
to drive out demons
& cure diseases.
This was the same pwr
& authority
Jesus had demonstrated
to God’s ppl
bfr He chose
His Apostles.
Jesus had preached
the gospel of the kingdom
to the poor.
He’d healed ppl
frm disease
& set ppl free
frm demonic power.
This was proof
that the kingdom
of God had come
near in the person
of Jesus.
& Jesus passed
that authority
& pwr on
to the Apostles
he’d appointed
& sent them out
to do what He
had been doing.
They went out
This is all while
Jesus was
still on earth.
Bfr His suffering.
Bfr His death
Burial
& resurrection.
After Jesus
went to the cross
& died for the sins
of the world
rose again
& conquered the grave
Jesus gave His apostles
even more authority.
In John 20:19-23
John tells us what happened
on the Sunday
Jesus rose frm the grave.
He says
John 20:19–23 (NIV)
19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”
20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”
22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Much more than
the authority
teach in His name
do miracles
drive out demons
& cure diseases
in His name
Jesus gave the Apostles
the authority
to give or deny forgiveness
of sins.
Just as Jesus
had forgiven sins
while on earth
He gives His Apostles
the authority
to forgive sin.
Jesus gave the same
authority to His Apostles
as the Father had gvn
to Jesus.
The Father sent Jesus
into the world
to teach ppl the way
to salvation
thru His Son.
& as Luke says
in Acts 10:38-43
Acts 10:38–43 (NIV)
38 “...God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and...he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,
40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.
41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.
42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.
43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
God the Father
anointed His Son Jesus
w/ the HS & power
when He was baptized
by the HS.
From that time on
Jesus began
His ministry.
Jesus went around
doing good
& healing both the physical
& spiritual sickness
of ppl who were oppressed
by the devil.
& Jesus also
forgave their sins.
& in the same way:
Jesus anointed His disciples
w/ the HS & power
to go & do
the same works
He did.
Jesus did not give
this ability
to all the disciples.
He gave this ability
only to the Apostles
who had seen Him
& ate w/ Him
after he rose.
Jesus commanded them
to go & preach abt
the coming Judgment
on the kingdom’s
of this world.
& to preach
the truth that it’s
only thru faith in
the name of Jesus
that we can have
our sins forgiven.
But here’s something
we need to understand
abt the forgiveness
that comes thru
the name of Jesus:
That forgiveness
is tied to His body
in the Church—
The Church
that’s founded on
the Apostles
& prophets
w/ Christ Jesus
as the cornerstone.
After Jesus died
rose
& ascended into heaven
Jesus gave
the authority to forgive
or not forgive sins
into the hands of
His Apostles.
That’s clearly
what Jesus said
in John 20:23
John 20:23 (NIV)
23 “If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
When Jesus
breathed on His Apostles
& gave them the gift
of the HS
He gave them
the authority
to speak
& act on His behalf.
Now
Jesus had been
preparing His disciples
for this ministry
for a few years.
In Matthew 16:15-19
When Jesus asked
His disciples who they
say He is
Peter said to Jesus
Matthew 16:16–19 (NIV)
16 “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.
18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Simon says....
Raise your hand

Simon says:
Jesus is
the Messiah
the Son of
the living God.
Jesus says:
This was revealed
to Simon
by the Father.
& then.........
Jesus
reveals something else
to Simon.
Jesus says
He will build
His Church
on two things:
First:
Jesus will build His Church
on the truth abt Jesus.
The foundational
teaching that Jesus is
the Messiah
The Son of
the living God.
Jesus Himself
is the cornerstone
of the churches foundation.
Nxt:
Jesus will build His Church
on the truth abt Peter.
Jesus renames Simon.
Jesus gives him
the name Peter.
The name ‘Peter’ means
“Rock.”
& ppl go on
& on abt
Jesus using two
dfrnt Greek words here
for ‘rock’
and claim that proves
Jesus is making
a distinction btwn
Peter the rock
& the rock
on which
Jesus wld build
His Church.
But if Jesus wanted
to make a distinction
btwn Simon
& the rock on which
Jesus wld build His Church
then why change
Simon’s name
at all.
Why not just say
“Simon
“You are Simon
“& on this ‘rock’
“I will build
“my Church?”
The fact is
Jesus changed
Simon’s name
to Rock.
& then says
“On this rock
“I will build
“my church.”
Why?
Bcs Peter is
in some way
the rock
on which Jesus
builds His Church.
This is even more clear
bcs Jesus also
gave Peter
the keys
to the kingdom.
& gave Peter
the authority
to bind & loose.
This means:
Peter has authority
frm Jesus
to forbid or allow ppl
into the Church.
& to forbid or allow
teachings & practices
in the Church.
& to forgive
or not forgive sin.
So the foundation
of the Church
starts w/ the Lord Jesus
as the cornerstone.
The nxt stone
or rock
put in place by Jesus
is Peter.
But Peter
is not the only rock
in the Churches
foundation.
& Peter
does not hold
the keys alone.
Nor does Peter
bind and loose
alone.
Peter represents
all the other
11 Apostles.
Jesus gives
the same keys
& same authority
to all the Apostles.
As Matthew
shows us
in Matthew 18:15-19.
Speaking to
the 12 Apostles
Jesus says:
Matthew 18:15–19 (NIV)
15 “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over.
16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’
17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
18 “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.”
We’ve all been guilty
of ripping verse 19
frm it’s context
& using it to teach something
Jesus never intended.
Jesus is not signing
a blank check
for two or three Christians
to gather in His name
have a prayer meeting
agree on something
& get whatever
we ask for.
The context here
is how the official leaders
in the Church
shld deal w/
members of the Church
who engage in
sinful behavior.
First:
One official leader
of the church
confronts the person
in private.
If they repent
no further action
is needed.
The person is restored
to the Lord.
If the sinning Christian
does not repent
then the 1st official leader
is to take one or two
other church leaders
& confront the person
in private.
If the sinning Christian
refuses to repent
Then the church leaders
are to tell the matter
to the whole Church.
& if the sinning Christian
still refuses to repent
then the Church leaders
are to put the person
out of the Church.
& refuse them
fellowship
w/ the Church.
The two who agree
on something
in verse 19
are the same
2 or three witnesses
who’ve tried to turn
the sinning Christian
back to the Lord.
They’ve refused
to repent
& are brought by
the same witnesses
bfr the Church;
They’ve still refused
to repent.
So the same witnesses
w/ the gathered Church
agree to put a sinning
unrepentant brother or sister
out of the Church.
& Jesus says:
whatever decision is made
by the Church
under the leadership
of the Apostles on earth
will be a binding decision
in heaven.
So, again:
Jesus gives Peter
& the other Apostles
the keys to kingdom
of heaven.
The Apostles have
the keys
to the Church.
They open the doors
or close the doors
of the Church.
They have the authority
to bind
& loose.
Whatever they say
is proper doctrine
& practice
is just like Jesus
saying it.
Whatever they say
is not proper
doctrine or practice
is just like Jesus
saying it.
Jesus gives
His Apostles Authority
to decide what is
binding & not binding
in the Church.
Nobody gets in or out
unless the Apostles
say so.
Jesus gave the Apostles
the authority to
So what is
the connection
btwn all this
& Spirit Baptism?
