John 20:19 ESV
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Context:
Jesus crucified, disciples terrified
mary magdalene first appeared to - tells disciples
later that night we find our story
(19) Disciples hiding behind locked doors (assumed they would be next)
(21) The Mission of the Church
immediate application to the apostles
see in Matt. 28 that this call applies to all believers
call is directly linked with giving of Holy Spirit
TEACHING POINT: God has called his followers to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ.
(22) The Power of the Church
Breath - in OT word for Breath and Spirit are the same
God put his breath/Spirit in Adam (Ruah)
disciples would have the association between the two ideas
significance of the Holy Spirit (directly associated with sending out in previous verse
not full giving (pentacost)
TEACHING POINT: God equipped us by giving the Holy Spirit.
(23) The Authority of the Church
the Spirit means the Church has the authority to judge the eternal position of an individual
“only Jesus can forgive sins”
church is Christ’s earthly representative
why it is good that he ascended - with the Spirit he can multiply himself within his Church
the one who responds in faith and repentance and bears fruit - we must say they are forgiven
to the one who rejects, or claims to accept but bears no fruit-we must say they are damned
judgement not based upon our opinion ( we don’t determine their standing) rather we communicate the judgement made upon them by God according to his Word.
Matthew 18:15-20:
15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” 11 The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Mt 18:15–20.
TEACHING POINT: we are Christ’s body for him to use
