INTRODUCTION
Let’s turn together
in our Bibles to
Acts chapter 2.
Acts chapter 2.
& we’re gonna read
verse 1-5.
& when you find that
in your Bible
pls stand for the reading
of God’s Word.
The title of today’s teaching is:
Holy Spirit Baptism.
In Acts 2:1-4...
The Scriptures say...
Acts 2:1–4 (NASB 2020)
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
2 And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 And tongues that looked like fire appeared to them, distributing themselves, and a tongue rested on each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with different tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.
You may be seated.
Today is
the Day
of Pentecost.
On this day
2000 years ago...
50 days
after the Lord
Jesus rose frm
the grave...
10 days after
the Lord Jesus
Ascended into heaven
Jesus sent what
the Father promised.
He poured out
the gift of the HS
on the Church.
They were baptized
w/ the HS.
They received
the gift the Father
promised;
they were filled w/
the HS;
the HS was
poured out
on them;
The HS
came upon them.
Over the past
few weeks
we’ve taken
a deep dive
into this subject.
We’ve learned that
The Promise
of HS baptism
is for all
God’s ppl.
We learned that
the meaning
of HS baptism is
To RECEIVE the gift
the Father promised;
to be FILLED w/ the HS;
to have the HS
POURED OUT on you;
& to have
the Holy Spirit
COME UPON you.
For Luke
those are all
dfrnt ways
of talking abt
the gift of the HS
that was gvn
on the day
of Pentecost.
We’ve also seen
the Purpose of
HS Baptism is
to receive supernatural SPIRITUAL GIFTS
that equip us for
Christ-honoring service.
We’ve touched on
the practical aspects
of HS baptism.
We saw that
HS baptism happens
after water baptism.
& HS baptism happens
thru PRAYER
& the Apostles
PLACING their hands
on people.
Last week we talked abt how this is true
based on
the Authority
Jesus gave the Apostles.
Jesus gave
His Apostles
power & authority
to represent Him
in all matters
that pertain to
the Church.
Jesus gave His apostles
the keys
to the kingdom.
He gave His Apostles
the Authority
to open the door
of the Church to some
& close it to others.
He gave them
the authority
to bind & loose
to forgive
or not forgive sin.
& he gave them
the authority
to give the HS
thru prayer
& the laying on
of their hands.
Today we’ll
expand on this.
& see how
the Apostles
appointed
& anointed
faithful men
to take their place
in passing that
gift on to others.
PRAYER
Let’s pray.
Father
illuminate our hearts
& minds to understand
Your Word.
& thru Your
All Holy
Good
& life-giving Spirit
give us grace
to obey the Word.
In Jesus name.
Amen.
Apostolic Authority
Frm the beginning
of the Church
the Apostles were
in charge
of everything
that pertained
to the Church.
In the 1st
chapters of Acts
Luke tells us
how the Apostles
guided the Church
in picking
a replacement
for Judas.
The Apostles
preached
the gospel.
The Apostles
performed powerful signs & wonders
as witnesses
that Jesus rose
frm the grave.
The Church continued
in the
Apostles doctrine.
The Apostles
were in charge of
distributing the
proceeds
being gathered
by the Church
to all the ppl.
The Apostles
were appointed
by Jesus
Anointed by Jesus
w/ the HS
& the Apostles
were gvn authority
by Jesus
to speak & act
on His behalf
in all matters
that pertained to
the Church.
But
as the Church grew
it became apparent
the Apostles
were not able
to do everything.
So the Apostles
appointed others
to take over
tasks for them.
As Luke tells us in
Acts 6:1–7 (NASB 2020)
1 Now at this time, as the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint developed on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.
2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.
3 Instead, brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
5 The announcement found approval with the whole congregation; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch.
6 And they brought these men before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them.
7 The word of God kept spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith.
Here Luke begins to show us
how the Authority Jesus gave
the Apostles was
passed dwn frm the Apostles
to faithful men
in the Church.
The Twelve Apostles
called all the congregation
of disciples—
The Church—
in Jerusalem together.
& the Apostles tell the Church
to choose 7 men—
men they know are
filled w/ the HS & wisdom—
& the Apostles
will put these men
in charge of
meeting the physical
needs of the Church.
So that the Apostles can
devote themselves fully
to meeting the spiritual needs
of the church thru
Prayer & the ministry
of the Word of God.
The Church chose 7 men.
Then the Apostles
prayed for these 7 men
& laid their hands
on them
& transferred their authority
to these 7 men
to officially act
on behalf of the Apostles
to meet the physical needs
of the Church.
These men were
the 1st to be ordained
to an official office in the Church
by the Apostles.
This office later
became known as
the Dia-co-nate. (Die-A-co-net)
The men who
who hold that office
are knows as deacons.
After the Apostles appointed
the 1st deacons
in the Church
a great persecution
broke out against
the Church in Jerusalem.
& all but the Apostles
were scattered.
& all who were scattered
preached the Word
wherever they went.
Philip went dwn
to Samaria
& preached
the gospel there.
We pick up the story
in Acts 8:9-15
Acts 8:9–15 (NASB 2020)
9 Now a man named Simon had previously been practicing magic in the city and astonishing the people of Samaria, claiming to be someone great;
10 and all the people, from small to great, were paying attention to him, saying, “This man is the Power of God that is called Great.”
11 And they were paying attention to him because for a long time he had astounded them with his magic arts.
12 But when they believed Philip as he was preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were being baptized.
13 Now even Simon himself believed; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he observed signs and great miracles taking place, he was repeatedly amazed.
Philip is one of
the deacons who were
appointed by the Apostles
to serve the church
in Jerusalem.
The persecution in Jerusalem
drove the deacons
& the rest of the disciples
out of Jerusalem.
So Philip goes to Samaria
& preaches
the gospel there.
& the Lord does miracles
thru Philip
to confirm the Word—
to confirm the message
he’s preaching abt Jesus.
Ppl blv the good news
that Jesus is the King
of God’s kingdom
& thru repentance & baptism
they can have their sins
forgiven
be saved
& receive the gift of
the HS.
The same message
Peter preached
on the day of Pentecost.
& those who blv
that message
are baptized
in water.
But notice what
Luke says next
in Acts 8:14.
He says
Acts 8:14 (NASB 2020)
14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John,
& why did the Apostles in Jerusalemsend the Apostles Peter & John
to Samaria?
Luke goes on in Acts 8:15...
to say...
Acts 8:15 (NASB 2020)
15 [they] came down and prayed for them that they would receive the Holy Spirit.
But why wld the Apostles
need to do that?
Luke tells us in Acts 8:16...
Acts 8:16 (NASB 2020)
16 (For [because] He [the HS] had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
They had not yet been baptized
w/ the HS
they had simply been baptized
in water.
Luke goes on in Acts 8:17...
to say...
Acts 8:17 (NASB 2020)
17 Then they [Peter & John] began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.
& then watch what Luke says
in Acts 8:18-19
He says...
Acts 8:18–19 (NASB 2020)
18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money,
19 saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
Peter goes on to rebuke Simon
for trying to buy the ability
to give the HS to ppl.
But the main thing
Luke is clearly teaching
is that only the Apostles
have the authority
to give the gift of the HS
to ppl thru prayer
& the laying on
of their hands.
Why didn’t someone else
pray for these believers
to receive the HS?
Why didn’t Philip—
who had been ordained
to be a deacon by the Apostles
& had the power to preach
& to perform signs & wonders—
Why didn’t he pray
for the believers in Samaria
place His hands on them
& baptize them
w/ the HS?
The answer:
Philip had no authority
to give the HS
to anyone.
He had incredible
power frm the HS
he’d received
frm the hands
of the Apostles
But he had no
authority
to baptize ppl
w/ the HS
Only the Apostles
cld do that.
So the Apostles
sent Peter & John to pray
& lay hands on
the newly baptized believers
in Samaria.
& thru prayer
& the laying on
of the Apostles hands
the Samaritans were
baptized w/ the HS.
Luke records
a similar situation
in Acts 19:1-6.
Oddly enough
this time it involves
the man
who had started the
persecution
that drove the disciples
out of Jerusalem.
In Acts 19:1-6.
Luke says...
Acts 19:1–6 (NASB 2020)
1 Now it happened that while Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.
2 He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “On the contrary, we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
Paul is also called Saul.
He was not
one of the original 12 Apostles.
Instead Paul was
one of Christ’s
worst enemies.
He persecuted the Church.
& was responsible for the death
of Stephen,
one of the other deacons
appointed by the Apostles.
Paul became an Apostle
after the Lord Jesus appeared
to him on the road
to Emmaus.
The Lord told Paul
that Paul wld be
His Apostle to the Gentiles.
& like the other Apostles
Paul had authority
to give the HS to those
he laid his hands on.
So, the Lord
gave the Apostles
the HS thru prayer
& the laying on
of their hands.
So what happened
after the Apostles
were no longer around?
Did the authority
to baptize w/
the HS
pass away w/ them.
Not at all.
Instead
the Apostles appointed
& anointed
other men in the Church
w/ this authority.
These men were called
Presbyters—
Elders—
Shepherds—
or Overseers.
Luke first mentions
the apostles appointing
presbyters in Acts 14.
There Luke tells us
abt Paul & Barnabas
who were both
They’re sent by the HS
frm the Church in Antioch
on this missionary journey
into territories where
Jewish ppl are
the minority.
They preach the gospel
of the kingdom.
& the the Lord confirms
the message of God’s grace
by allowing Paul
& Barnabas to perform
signs & wonders.
They start churches
in every city.
& in Acts 14:20-23...
Luke tells us...
Acts 14:21–23 (NASB 2020)
21 ...they returned to Lystra, to Iconium, and to Antioch,
22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “It is through many tribulations that we must enter the kingdom of God.”
23 When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they entrusted them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
The Apostles appointed
or ordained elders
in every church.
& these elders were to represent
the Apostles
& teach the faith
the Apostles taught.
In Acts 15...
We see the same thing
had already been done
in Jerusalem.
There we learn how
the Apostles & elders
handled a problem
that came up in the Church.
Luke says:
Acts 15 (NIV)
1 Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.”
2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders about this question.
By this time
in Church history
the Apostles
had already ordained elders
in Jerusalem
to work w/ them
in building the Church.
The Apostles ordained elders
who were to represent
the Apostles
& teach the faith
the Apostles taught.
When we look at Paul’s letters
to Titus & Timothy
we see that the authority
to appoint or ordain elders
was passed on
frm the Apostles
to the elders
in the Church.
In Titus 1:4-5
Paul writes...
Titus 1:4–5 (NIV)
4 To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.
5 The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.
Titus
who was appointed
to be an elder
by the Apostle Paul
was also gvn authority
to appoint others
as elders.
& in this way
the authority
& the faith of the Apostles
was passed frm
generation to generation.
How was that authority passed on?
Thru prayer
& the laying on
of the Apostles hands.
As we read in 1 Timothy 1:6
Paul says...
2 Timothy 1:6 (NIV)
6 ...I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
Paul tells us what
this gift is
in 2 Timothy 1:7
2 Timothy 1:7–8 (NIV)
7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
8 So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God.
Timothy received
the gift of the HS
when Paul laid His hands
on Timothy.
& thru the power
of the Spirit
Timothy was enabled
by God to continue in
Christ-honoring service
as a minister of the gospel.
But Paul was not alone
one who laid his hands
on Timothy
to give him the gift
of the Holy Spirit.
In 1 Timothy 4:14
Paul says...
1 Timothy 4:14 (NASB 2020)
14 Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was granted to you through words of prophecy with the laying on of hands by the council of elders.
By the time Paul writes this letter
around 20 years after
the Day of Pentecost
there is already
a council of elders who were
laying hands
on ppl in the Church
to give them the gift
of the HS.
& here we see the purpose
of HS baptism spelled
out very clearly.
Timothy was gvn
the gift of the HS
when Paul & the elders
placed their hands on him.
& w/ the HS
came the spiritual gifting
the supernatural power
that qualified & equipped Timothy
for Christ-honoring service.
& just like Titus
Timothy was also gvn authority
to appoint others
to the office of elder.
1 Timothy 5:22 (NASB 2020)
22 Do not lay hands upon anyone too quickly and thereby share responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin.
The laying on of hands
here is in appointing ppl
to eldership in the Church.
& w/ that appointment
elders are gvn authority
frm the Apostles
to baptize w/ the HS.
So in the Church
The Bishops
The Elders
The Presbyters
have been gvn authority
that was handed dwn
by the Apostles
to administer the gift
of HS baptism.
CONCLUSION
As we close
How does this
apply to us today?
2000 years
after the 1st Pentecost
How do we receive
HS baptism?
After ppl are baptized in water
the elders of the Church
shld lay hands on the
newly baptized believer
& ask God to give them
the gift of the HS.
& we shld expect God
to answer that prayer
& baptize them
w/ the HS.
& w/ that gifting will come
supernatural spiritual power
to enable them for
Christ-honoring service
in the Church.
One question we
have not addressed yet
in this series is:
Should we expect something
to happen
when ppl are baptized
w/ the HS?
You’ll need to come back
nxt week to here the answer
to that question.
PRAYER
Let’s all stand for prayer.
