Christmas Eve Candlelight Service 2004

Scripture readings on “The Light” that is Jesus come into the world:

(to be read in succession by each one coming to light a candle on the altar – please speak your verse into the microphone so all can hear God’s Word and worship the Christ child)

A. “the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."” (Mt 4:16 NivUS)

B. “"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel."” (Lu 2:29-32 NivUS)

C. “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” (Joh 1:3-5 NivUS)

D. “There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.” (Joh 1:6-9 NivUS)

E. “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."” (Joh 8:12 NivUS)

F. “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world."” (Joh 9:5 NivUS)

G. “Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light." When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.” (Joh 12:36 NivUS)

H. “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” (Joh 12:46 NivUS)

I. “There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.” (Mt 17:2 NivUS)

J. “I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’” (Ac 26:17-18 NivUS)

K. “But I have had God’s help to this very day, and so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen— that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles."” (Ac 26:22-23 NivUS)

L. “Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.” (1Co 4:5 NivUS)

M. “For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.” (2Co 4:6 NivUS)

N. “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” (2Co 6:14 NivUS)

O. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)” (Eph 5:8-9 NivUS)

P. “But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."” (Eph 5:13-14 NivUS)

Q. “giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,” (Col 1:12-13 NivUS)

R. “You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” (1Th 5:5 NivUS)

S. “who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.” (1Ti 6:16 NivUS)

T. “but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” (2Ti 1:10 NivUS)

U. “Remember those earlier days after you had received the light, when you stood your ground in a great contest in the face of suffering.” (Heb 10:32 NivUS)

V. “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” (1Pe 2:9 NivUS)

W. “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2Pe 1:19 NivUS)

X. “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (1Jo 1:5-7 NivUS)

Y. “Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him.” (1Jo 2:8-11 NivUS)

Z. “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. --- There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.” (Re 21:23-25, 22:5 NivUS)

Hymn #147 Silent Night! Holy Night! (all)

Isaiah 7:1-17, 9:2-7, 42:1-4, 49:1-7

Message: Thoughts and Applications about the Christmas Story

We celebrate Jesus’ birth as a baby and not as an adult (like Moody for instance) because of his accomplishments even as a baby. (Lk. 2:34-35, Php. 2:5-7)

Jesus came as a baby. (Luke 2:4-7)

Hymn #157 Away in a Manger (all)

Hymn #144 How Great Our Joy! (1, 2, 3)

Jesus must also be born in us. (John 3:1-8, 16)

Hymn #141 O Little Town of Bethlehem (all)

Jesus came because God is opposed to divorce.

(Mt. 1:18-25, John 3:17-18, Rom. 8:32-39)

Hymn #127 Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne (1, 2, 5)

Hymn #125 Joy to the World (1, 3, 4)

Jesus came to face what we face. (Mt. 2:13-18)

                   Wise men not politically correct.

They shook up the establishment (gave notice).

The world is still trying to kill Jesus.

Those desperate for power are never comfortable with Jesus.

Hymn #139 I Wonder as I Wander (1, 2)

Did the people in the Christmas story return to an ordinary life after Jesus’ birth?

Can we?

Can we, or should we stay in Bethlehem?

Does the birth of Jesus propel us on a pilgrimage?

Jesus was born to die.

Isaiah 50:4-9, 52:13-53:12

Jesus was born to die, and so are we – to sin, to self, to a new life. (Rom. 6:1-4)

Seeing Jesus: Carol Calenberg Chrismas letter

“Give Us This Day” – Christ in a Prison Camp

Let us not be like “church art” hiding in plain sight.

“"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Mt 5:14-16 NivUS)

Let us not let the world overlook the priceless Son of God come to earth.

Let us not overlook his worship.

Luke 1:32-33
