Israel in sin (killing babies was a big one), God sent them into exile
Jeremiah told them this would happen and prophesied a return in 70 years
Right on time thanks to Daniels intercession, and the Angel Michael, and of course the Power of GOD....
They were released by the king of the world to build their temple so they started to, but ran into many obstacles. attacks, lies, practical issues, unfaithfulness.
God answered their prayers and caused the Babylonian KING to force their enemies to bank roll the entire Enterprise and the building of the wall.
They built the wall it was very tough and discouraging, and took amazing leadership to guide them through. Nehemiah is a book that shows much of what was going on.
It is during this time of hardship and trials that they could be wondering is God really out there , does he care?
Go used Ezra, Nehemiah, and the Prophet Haggai to help guide them during this time...

As Haggai encouraged the returned Jewish exiles to rebuild the temple, Zechariah encouraged them to repent and renew their covenant with God. Such spiritual renewal would be necessary for the people to be ready to worship God once the temple was rebuilt (about 516 B.C.). He accused them of doing the very things their ancestors had done before the exile. He was concerned about social justice for widows, orphans, and foreigners. But as the people endured opposition from the non-Jewish inhabitants of Judea, Zechariah reassured them of God’s abiding comfort and care. God would continue his covenant with Israel. Messianic hope was rekindled during Zechariah’s ministry, and the book ends with the promise that the Lord would establish his rule over all the earth (14:9).

We have now turned our attention to the little read and often neglected Book of Zechariah. Zechariah is a priest and prophet (one of the few with both roles)
First part of chapter 1 is a call for Israel to return to the LORD. Zechariah 1:3, Don’t be link you sinful fathers! And they repent!
Zechariah 1:3 ESV
3 Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.
Zechariah 1:14 ESV
14 So the angel who talked with me said to me, ‘Cry out, Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion.
Zechariah 1:17 ESV
17 Cry out again, Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.’ ”
Chapters 1b-6 = has a series of visions that clearly show that some of his prophetic material is about the promised Messiah!
VISIONS1-3: Horsemen, Horns (babylon, persia, greece & ROme) & Craftmen (detroy the horns), Man Measuring Jerusalem,
Zechariah 2:8 “8 For thus said the Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye: 9 “Behold, I will shake my hand over them, and they shall become plunder for those who served them. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me.”
Zechariah 2:13 “13 Be silent, all flesh, before the Lord, for he has roused himself from his holy dwelling.”
VISION4: Joshua High priest accused by satan given clean priestly garments,
Zechariah 3:9 “9 For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.”
VISION5 Golden Lampstand,
Zechariah 4:6 “6 Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.”
VISION6&7: Flying Scroll , Woman in a Basket,
VISION8: four chariots
Zechariah 6:15 “15 “And those who are far off shall come and help to build the temple of the Lord. And you shall know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. And this shall come to pass, if you will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God.””
Chapters 6-7 are about some issues current events epmasizing a call to Justice and Mercy. Some of the Jews in Bethel, near by that are not helping build Jerusalem are worried about fasting on the 9th of Av, Marking the Destruction of the Temple in in Jerusalem by King Nebuchadnezzar a 70 years ago… They were not truly concerned about rightly walking before god in a practical way… showing kindness, rendering true judgement, helping the widow, fatherless and sojourners.
Chapters 8-11 - Prophetic statement that shows God is concerned with them, and goes on to prophetically describe future events like Alexander teh greats conquest of the philistines, and how he left Jerusalem alone. — and also Jesus and the Triumphal entry into Jerusalem
Chapter 12 - Prophetic statement: one of the several place in in the Bible that appears to describe the battle of Armageddon.
God will make Jerusalem a cup of “staggering” to all surrounding people. a Heavy stone, and all who lift it will hurt themselves.
the enemies around Israel hate her strongly right now!
all the nations will gather against Jerusalem
God will defend her and strike every horse with panic & Blindness, riders with madness
God will make Judah HOT like a blazing pot in the midst of tinder, and shall burn up all surrounding peoples.
Inhabitants of Jerusalem will be protected by God and given great strength like a mighty angel
God will seek to destroy all nations that come against Jerusalem.
Then a picture of the Messiah
Zechariah 12:10 “10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”
all morning by them selves by tribes!
Chapter 13 - A fountain of cleansing (the blood of Jesus)
Zechariah 13:1 “1 “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.”
Cutting off Idolatry, false teachers and the spirit of uncleanness Zech 13:2 (goes back to vision of the woman in the basket Zech 5:5-11 )
False Prophets will go into pretending to be farmers because the backlash against them. even their parents will disown them and want them dead.
The true shepherd struck Zech 13:7 (Jesus quoted part of this prophecy when He was on His way to Gethsemane with His disciples Matt 26:31).
The nation will be refined (Zech. 12:10–13:9)
One third of the people will be spared, the true believing remnant, while the rest will be rejected and perish.
Zechariah 13:9 ESV
9 And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”

Half of Jerusalem will go into exile

Israel will be attacked, and will loose!

Zechariah 14:1-2 (ESV)
Zechariah 14:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
This will look very bad. It is hard to contemplate, after all they have gone through. Yet It will rock the Jewish world to the core.
This is as grim as it gets.

But GOD… Shows up!

Zechariah 14:3–4 ESV
3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.
God is here

Jews will flee to the new valley

Zechariah 14:5 ESV
5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

How God will strike the enemies

Zechariah 14:12–13 ESV
12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 And on that day a great panic from the Lord shall fall on them, so that each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other.
Zechariah 14:15 ESV
15 And a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever beasts may be in those camps.

The Spoils of War

Zechariah 14:14 ESV
14 Even Judah will fight at Jerusalem. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be collected, gold, silver, and garments in great abundance.

Did I mention God Shows up? (with guests)

Who are the Holy ones?

A Unique Day

Zechariah 14:6–8 ESV
6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. 8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.
