In The Sanctuary

We say we are to transform lovers of self into lovers of God, worshippers

So as we seek to move forward

We thus, continue on our study in Hebrews, moving “Forward in Faith”

We lift our hand in the sanctuary is a song we sing but there is more to it than that.

Read with me this passage in Hebrews 9 …

Next week we will focus on the blood of Jesus and what it does for us … but today … we talk about worship?

I want you to see this picture of the Old Sanctuary, the Earthly Sanctuary and then see the Heavenly Sanctuary and talk for a minute about how to worship the Lord understanding the Sanctuary

In the Church, at Home, In the World, and in Heaven …

Now as we have been learning and as we know, the Old Covenant was meant to teach us and prepare us for what was given to us in Christ Jesus and for what we will experience in his presence in Eternity.

How do we become worshippers?

Let’s about the Old or Earthly Sanctuary

And then the reality of a Current or Heavenly Sanctuary …

And then let’s close with how we can Worship, even now, in the Heavenly Realms

It talks about the Old Sanctuary

1. The Old Sanctuary

Now the Tabernacle Structure that God instructed them to build was very detailed but also very simple. But we also know from chapter 8 that it was built to exacting specifications and regulations for ministry as given by God to Moses.

Our passage here talks about the two places, inside the Tabernacle. Now you will remember that the Tabernacle was the “mobile” sanctuary. It was predecessor to the Temple which was built in Jerusalem. It traveled with the children of Israel in the desert and in the Promised Land until they were able to build a fixed permanent site under Solomon.

They had to take it down and set it up every time they moved.

Two parts inside … Let’s talk about them for a minute

A. “First Room” – Holy Place

The priest would enter the initial doorway or veil into the Holy Place … and there would be

  • 1. The Lampstand -

It was a 7 branched golden lampstand. There were 7 identical lampstands that burned pure olive oil. There were no windows so they provided the light necessary for ministry by the priests in the Holy Place. If you have been here when we studied the Tabernacle it had four THICK layers of linen and animal skins so it would be VERY dark without those lamps for light

  • 2. Table of Showbread

Also in the Holy Place was a Table with 12 Loaves of Bread. The Table of Showbread of the “Bread of Presence” – and the “Table of Presence” It was a symbol of the Presence of God with them and that he was their sustenance for life

Ex. 25:23-30; 37:10-16

B. The Most Holy Place

          • 1. the Veil -

the first thing that is referred to about this room is that it is separated from the rest by this veil. The Holy Place could only be entered by Priests and then the Most Holy Place could only be entered by the High Priest and then once a year and after he had dealt with his own sin.

After the veil it mentions the Golden Altar of Incense and if you read it, it could appear that the Golden Altar was BEHIND the veil … But perhaps a better way to understand this is that the Most Holy Place is behind the veil and these two items referred to BELONG to the Holy Place. Because it says the Most Holy Place HAS these things. One is before the veil and one is behind the veil.

  • 2. Altar of Incense

is immediately before the veil. The High Priest offered a sacrifice there daily in the morning and in the evening. It represented Prayers offered to God as David says in Psalm 141:2 may my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

The incense was a blend of the most beautiful perfumes including four special perfumes one of which was pure frankincense. It produced a sweet smelling fragrance before the Lord.

But more than that on the Annual Day of Atonement, the High Priest would take hot coals from this altar of incense and burn incense directly before the Mercy Seat Behind the Veil. So it was as if the prayers offered daily for an entire year then were taken straight to the mercy seat that God would accept the sacrifice for their sin and atonement.

  • 3. Ark of the Covenant

So there behind the veil the most important furnishing was the Ark of the Covenant. It was the only thing behind the veil in a perfectly square compartment 15 feet by 15 feet by 15 feet. It was a chest a little over 3.5 feet long, 2.25 feet high, and 2.25 feet wide. On the Day of Atonement the blood of the sacrifice was sprinkled on the mercy seat Covering the peoples sin but also covering what it contained.

Inside the box were three things.

a. A pottery jar containing some of the manna that the Lord had used to provide for them in the wilderness for their daily food a symbol of God’s provision.

b. Also inside was Aaron’s Rod. Why? Moses took one rod from a leader of each Tribe and placed them in the Tabernacle to allow the Lord to choose the Spiritual Leader of the people. Aaron’s Rod flowered and produced almonds. So that rod was kept there as a symbol of God’s choosing of the Spiritual Leadership of his people. So the Preacher was represented.

c. Finally inside, also, were the Tablets which contained the Law of God. So the Provision, the Preacher, and the Proclamation of God’s Truth were inside the Ark in the Holy of Holies. When the blood poured over the mercy seat it also covered the law which was a testament to the fact that the people had broken it but it was covered in the blood so God only saw the blood.

Did you

There atop the Ark were the Cherubim displaying the glory of God. And so the Glory of God overshadows even the atonement. God’s glory should overshadow everything even salvation, God’s Provision, the Preacher and the Proclamation.

One thing before I move on about the Earthly Sanctuary and that is

C. Limitations

  • 1. Daily observances required.

The different priests, when it was their time, had to enter the Holy Place and perform their duties

  • 2. Yearly

the High Priest entered the Holy of Holies and offered a sacrifice there

  • 3. Priests ONLY

could enter the Holy Place and that was the only place and people who had access to the elements of worship

  • 4. High Priest ONLY

could enter the Most Holy Place and then only once a year with a blood sacrifice that was not effective to do away with their sin.

We know that the Old Sanctuary was built to a pattern of what was in Heaven according to Heb 8:15 … but a sad thing about the Old Sanctuary was that it also made ever clear to all our SEPARATION from God …

We needed something MORE because v9 says that the old sanctuary wasn’t able to “clear the conscience of the worshipper” And that is what we need to be worshippers …

2. The Current Sanctuary

Hebrews 8:2 says that the Current Sanctuary the One that is in Heaven was set up by God not by man.

Verse 11 says “When Christ came …” aren’t you glad there was a transition?

Aren’t you glad that we aren’t on the outside looking in any longer?

We are no longer on the outside because

v11 says He went THROUGH the Greater and MORE PERFECT tabernacle …

v24 says the PERFECT ONE not the COPY … he appeared before God FOR US …

And he’s not there offering sacrifices for use over and over, again and again … and it isn’t a substitute disconnected sacrifice, he offered HIMSELF for us.

No! Praise God, Jesus Christ presented himself for us ONCE and FOR ALL

We don’t have a substitute

We don’t have an artificial

We have REALITY in Jesus Christ.

Oh people we can’t trust in things made with Human Hands.

You can’t trust in forgiveness given by a man

You can’t trust in a church membership to be your salvation

Our salvation is in Jesus Christ.

The Tabernacle was temporary until Solomon’s Temple was built.

Solomon’s Temple was desecrated by the Pagan’s from the Babylonians.

They returned and rebuilt the Temple, Herod expanded the temple twice. But it was destroyed by the Romans and General Titus in 70 AD and it has never been rebuilt.

The High Priest LEFT the Holy of Holies

Jesus has never left He is THERE

The sacrifices of the Law were ONLY for Israel

but the sacrifice of Christ is for ALL people

When the blood was offered in the Holy of Holies it covered the law thus covering our sins

but Jesus Christ did away with our sins

The High Priest would return from God’s presence and bless the people but leave them still outside

However, Jesus Christ now in God’s presence will also return one day and take us to be WITH HIM … v28 Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him

When Jesus said “It is Finished” he meant it … it is COMPLETE in Christ

  • A Lampstand – Jesus is our Light - Jesus said in John 8:12 that he is the Light of the World … he is our Lampstand the light by which we see our way into the Holy Place of God
  • Jesus is our Bread like … The Showbread - In John 6:35 I am the Bread of Life he who comes to me will never go hungry
  • He is our Intercession - Altar of Incense - Passing through the Holy Place we come to the Altar of Incense … what are the prayers that go up? What is the sweet fragrance that is pleasing to the intercession for us?

Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against those whom god has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died – more than that, who was raised to life – is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Remember we learned already from this book that Jesus doesn’t have to keep ON interceding for us but has interceded for us ONCE and it is Sufficient for Always.

  • Veil - And when Jesus Christ died that veil in the Temple that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was torn removing the separation between us and God. Jesus Christ ascended to the right hand of the Father where he is even now and he presented himself for our sin
  • He is Our Salvation - Ark - And so leaving the Altar of Incense where Christ is our intercession we go behind the veil And Christ is presented for us at

The Ark of God

The Ark of God’s Strength

The Ark of Testimony

Those are all ways that the Ark of the Covenant was known

Jesus is our ARK that carries us into God’s presence for God’s strength because of his testimony.

He is our Covering where we Receive MERCY and Find Grace

He is the Substitute Sacrifice that makes atonement for our sins that is the word “Propitiation”

1 Jn 2:2 he is our atoning sacrifice (propitiation) for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world

Rom 3:25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement (propitiation) through faith in his blood.

And within Christ we have the Provision we need, the Preacher of the greatest Gospel, and the Greatest Proclamation, “Be Reconciled then to Christ, Salvation is in Jesus Christ alone”

Oh did you see the completeness of the work in Christ Jesus?

Notice the TENSE of the words

In v26 – HE has appeared once for all

In v24 – He NOW appears for us in God’s Presence

And in v28 – He will appear a second time

Currently we are residents of Heaven while living on earth

But is that all there is to learn from this look at the sanctuaries? Praise the Lord I’m saved, forgiven, and free?

Since we don’t have the law, are we free from Lives of Sacrificial Worship?

Romans 12:1-2 - Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

NLT - And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Living Sacrifices … that is what we are

In other words, Theology isn’t just philosophy and knowledge

Orthodoxy, (right doctrine) should lead to Orthopraxy (right living)

Theology (knowledge about God) should lead to Doxology (worship of God)

Lives of worship … how do we offer lives of sacrifice, like the Sanctuary? And thus be people who LIVE …

3. Worshipping in the Heavenly Realms

The greatest thing is that we are no longer separated from God

And because of Christ Jesus we can enter with a clear conscience before God

1 Peter 2:9 you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light

When we know what Christ has done for us we can worship him in every aspect of our life and work

But let me give you a few ways that we worship him

A. In the Church

Did you see the correlation between their Sanctuary Worship and what we do in Worship?

  • 1. Lampstand -

You come to this place to receive Light from the Word of God in the darkest place of places. Remember that in Revelation there are 7 Lampstands that are 7 real churches but symbolic of all churches, and in the Tabernacle there 7 Lampstands. So the church today is Light of the World. Jesus called us a City on a Hill that cannot be hidden in Matthew 5, so we don’t hide our light but shine and you need this light in the darkness of the world. Not just once a week either.

  • 2. Showbread –

did you notice it … NEW BREAD was placed out every Sabbath. It represented God’s presence with us as sustenance and life. Well folks we bring you new bread every week. Don’t miss the New Bread that God has for you hear every week.

  • 3. Christ has given you something, just like in the Ark,

The Provision of Salvation, Preached to you through a God called Preacher, the Proclamation of the Gospel of Christ and the Truth of his Word teaching us how to live.

Worship him here receiving light and life – straight from the Most Holy Place

B. At Home

  • 1. Lampstand and Showbread –

it’s not enough to just get light or bread here on Sunday but open his Word daily as a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path … you wouldn’t walk down a dark forest path without a flashlight but you go out into the darkness of this world we live in without the daily light of Jesus the Word of God. You wouldn’t only eat once or twice a week no you may like to Go out and have someone make you a fancy meal weekly but you have to know how to feed yourself too. Open that Word and worship him daily

  • 2. Incense –

Remember David said Psalm 141:2 may my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice.

You worship him in the morning and worship him in the evening following the pattern of the Altar of Incense as you come before him with your prayers. Notice David even suggests a pattern. As he set before God his concerns in the morning and lifting up my hands praising him in the evening like the evening sacrifice that goes up before the Lord.

Worship him in the pattern of the Heavenly Temple that was copied in the earthly.

We worship him in the church and in our homes and

C. In the World

  • 1. Lampstand …

YOU ARE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD … YOU --- why because Christ is IN you and shining through you

Philippians 2:14-16a do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life

Know his Word and Hold out his Word

Worship him in the World by Proclaiming him

  • 2. incense –

worship him by lifting up your neighborhood before the throne of God

And finally we worship him

D. In Heaven -

  • 1. we are no longer separated … we come boldly before the Throne of God through Jesus Christ, we receive Mercy and Find Grace and we Enter in – we touch Heaven when we worship … we are NOW residents of Heaven

Hebrews 4:11 Let us therefore, make every effort to enter that rest

Heb 9:12 says that Jesus entered into the Most Holy Place once and for all … So that WE can enter in - - because Jesus is already there and he lives in US!

Enter In

Enter in, enter in

Surrender to the Spirit’s call to die and enter in

Enter in find Peace within

The Holy Life awaits you

Can’t we worship him?
