Uncomfortable things

Story: Entering boot camp (failure, hard, too hard to do; told would not make it). Same thing with going to Sunset, what if I fail? I was not a spring chicken when I went.
Have you ever had to face uncomfortable things?
Have you had to do uncomfortable things, then found out it was really easy to do?
Have you done uncomfortable things for the sake of others?
Jesus knew what He had to do. He had prophesied about it several times. He quoted the prophets who spoke of what He had to do. He was going to face an uncomfortable thing in the flesh so that we could be saved.
Back up with me and look at what was just before our passage tonight:
John 12:23–24 NASB95
23 And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
John 12:25–26 NASB95
25 “He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. 26 “If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him.
He talks about, using an analog of a seed, He having to die so that it would bear much fruit.
This leads us to our passage tonight.

Just the facts

You want to know truth? Then, you want to know the facts. May we together glean from the facts now?
John 12:27 NASB95
27 “Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.
John 12:28–29 NASB95
28 “Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came out of heaven: “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
John 12:30–31 NASB95
30 Jesus answered and said, “This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes. 31 “Now judgment is upon this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.
John 12:32–33 NASB95
32 “And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself.” 33 But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.
Just the facts picture here
Just the facts, what verse sticks out to you?
Just the facts whose soul is troubled (v.27)?
What did Jesus desire (v.28)?
What was the response and from whom (v.28)?
What did the crowd think (v.29)?
What was the purpose of the voice (v.30)?
Why was it for their sake (v.31)?
How was the ruler of this world going to be cast out (v.32)?
Why was Jesus telling them all of this (v.33)?

Jesus public prayer proves His resolve

What do you think the word resolve means, in your own words?
Resolve (in noun form): firm determination to do something.
What was Jesus resolved to do?
John 12:27–28 NLT
27 “Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came! 28 Father, bring glory to your name.” Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, “I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again.”
Be Resolved picture here
Jesus was resolved for this hour, the hour in which He had come.
He was not resolved for the Father to save Him, for that was a rhetorical question, for He came for this purpose, for this hour.
Jesus resolve got a heavenly answer.
How do you think, what do you believe (v.28) about “have” and “will?”
Could be in sending Jesus (that would have been glorified); will, well that could be going to the cross.
Jesus very soul was troubled, why? Because what He was resolved to do (go to the cross for us).
Clarke: “As a man he was troubled at the prospect of a violent death. Nature abhors death. God has implanted that abhorrence in nature, that it might become a principle of self preservation and it is to this that we owe all the prudence and caution by which we avoid danger.”
Morris on this verse said: “It seems clear that the words represent a rhetorical question, a hypothetical prayer at which Jesus looks, but which He refuses to pray.”
Jesus concern was not about Him and His flesh, but in bringing glory to the Father. Glory by the suffering He is about to endure.

Did you hear that?

Have you ever heard something and you were not sure what it was, or who it was?
Lets look and see what they heard this time.
John 12:28 HCSB
28 Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again!”
John 12:29 HCSB
29 The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him.
John 12:30 HCSB
30 Jesus responded, “This voice came, not for Me, but for you.
Heavenly voice, now the third time (Mt3:17, 17:5)
The announcement of “this is MY SON”
Then at the mount of transfiguration “this is MY SON, now listen to Him.”
Divine testimony about the Divine Son who is about to make the acceptable sacrifice.
This divine testimony was the assurance from God that Jesus as He approached the cross was needed, prophesied and would be acceptable.
The crowd heard the voice, but did not understand the message.
They heard the public prayer (which is out of the ordinary) and the prayer, the voice should have been a conviction that Jesus was in contact directly with the Father.
Jesus gave the message purpose (v.30)
Have the Lord given us a message that was purposed? Can you give me an example of one?
And will glorify it (v.28)
At the cross
At the resurrection
At the ascension
At the sending of Holy Spirit

Can you understand this?

Sometimes we can hear something, but not really be listening. Jesus speaks plainly, let’s look together.
John 12:31–32 HCSB
31 Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out. 32 As for Me, if I am lifted up from the earth I will draw all people to Myself.”
John 12:33 HCSB
33 He said this to signify what kind of death He was about to die.
Plainly: This is not for Me, it is for you
Jesus did not want there to be any misunderstanding. The heavenly, divine message was for them, not for Him.
Plainly: Judgment is upon the world and the ruler will be cast out.
Jesus had spoken of the pending cross
The death of Jesus might seem like victory for the world and for Satan, but the resurrection showed the victory and the defeat of Satan.
Galatians 6:14 NASB95
14 But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
Plainly: How there will be victory
It was at the cross the world and the world system is judged and there is victory for the believer.
Satan for a time is permitted to go to and fro on the earth, but the reality is he is a defeated enemy.
The demons are subjects to the Lord and Satan cast down (Lk10:17-19)
Luke 10:17 NASB95
17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
Luke 10:18 NASB95
18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.
Luke 10:19 NASB95
19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
Satan was cast out of heaven, and will be cast into the lake of fire one day (Rev19:20).
Revelation 19:20 NASB95
20 And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.
Lifted up, not the first time, we have seen before (Jn3:14, 8:28; and Isa52:13)
Isaiah 52:13 NASB95
13 Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted.
Lifted up has a double meaning, lifted up literally on the cross (elevation) and (exaltation) glorification, also can mean elevation to His rightful place in heaven on the throne.
Draw all men (v.32)?
Does this mean all? Does this mean universalism that all men will be saved? But the opportunity for all men to be saved by faith is available.
It means all men with no other distinction except faith.
Guzik said: “Jesus new that the benefit of His work on the cross would go far beyond blessing and salvation to the Jewish people. He would draw all peoples to Himself.”
How about another quote worth quoting?
Spurgeon said: “There is no exclusion of any class or creature from the mercy of God in Christ Jesus… The history of the church proves how true this is: the muster-roll of the converted includes princes and paupers, peers and potmen.”
Jesus knew the manner of His death, the humiliation of His death, the pain of His death yet He went to the cross anyways for YOU and for ME. - for this was God’s will, this was God’s purpose for sending the Son, and that hour had come.
