1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you into a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” 4 So Abram went away as the Lord had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Now Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.

Jacob/Israel
the 12 sons of Israel
The Abrahamic Covenant
God established a covenant with Abraham -
Genesis 15 and Genesis 17 contain the details of the covenant
Genesis 12.1-3 - was the call of Abraham and contains the promises of God to him
Genesis 22 - God confirms His promise with an oath
Significance of Abrahamic Covenant
God establishes His plan of salvation for the whole world
It is the forerunner of the gospel of Christ

The gospel as a promise

God’s promise to Abraham was two-fold
Genesis 12:2–3 NASB 2020
2 And I will make you into a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
a promise of personal blessing to Abraham - verse 2
a promise of blessing to the nations - verse 3
Genesis 18:17–18 NASB 2020
17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 since Abraham will certainly become a great and mighty nation, and in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed?
Abrahamic covenant contains the gospel in the form of a promise!
Abraham’s life will lay the foundation of how God will bless the nations!

The promise and the blessing

God promised to bless Abraham and the nations.
Abrahamic covenant has 2 important promises - an heir/seed and a land
Genesis 15:1–21 NASB 2020
1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “Lord God, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 Abram also said, “Since You have given me no son, one who has been born in my house is my heir.” 4 Then behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir; but one who will come from your own body shall be your heir.” 5 And He took him outside and said, “Now look toward the heavens and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” And He said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” 6 Then he believed in the Lord; and He credited it to him as righteousness. 7 And He said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to possess it.” 8 But he said, “Lord God, how may I know that I will possess it?” 9 So He said to him, “Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds. 11 And birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away. 12 Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years. 14 But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterward they will come out with many possessions. 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you will be buried at a good old age. 16 Then in the fourth generation they will return here, for the wrongdoing of the Amorite is not yet complete.” 17 Now it came about, when the sun had set, that it was very dark, and behold, a smoking oven and a flaming torch appeared which passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 the land of the Kenite, the Kenizzite, the Kadmonite, 20 the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Girgashite, and the Jebusite.”
God promised him an heir and descendants at many as the stars
God promised him a land - Canaan
ALL of God’s blessings to Abraham are contained in these 2 elements -
without an heir and a land, Abraham will never be truly blessed
with a son/seed - Abraham will have an heir to his riches
with a land - there will be a place for his descendants to thrive and enjoy God’s blessings
God’s blessing for the nations is in the promised Seed
Genesis 22:16–18 NASB 2020
16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand, which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
the Seed is the Promised Messiah who will save the world from sin
the Seed brings with it the blessing of God to the nations
Galatians 3:8–14 NASB 2020
8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying,All the nations will be blessed in you.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. 10 For all who are of works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all the things written in the book of the law, to do them.” 11 Now, that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “the righteous one will live by faith.” 12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, “the person who performs them will live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a Tree”— 14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
as Abraham received the blessing by faith - so are the believers today
Christ was the promised Deliverer/Savior
Christ brings with Him the blessing of Abraham - the promised Holy Spirit!
Acts 1.4 - He asked the disciples to wait for the Promise
Acts 2.33 - He is the dispenser of the Promise
Acts 2:33 NASB 2020
33 Therefore, since He has been exalted at the right hand of God, and has received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He has poured out this which you both see and hear.
ALL THE BLESSINGS OF GOD FOR US TODAY ARE CONTAINED IN THESE 2 - CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT!
Ephesians 1:3 NASB 2020
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
Ephesians 1:13–14 NASB 2020
13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise, 14 who is a first installment of our inheritance, in regard to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
verse 3 - points to the plan of God
verse 13 - points to the fulfillment of God’s plan for us
Galatians 3:29 NASB 2020
29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
we are heirs of the land of promise - the Holy Spirit
QUOTES FROM WMB
38 Now, what is the land promised to the New Testament believer? The promise is the Holy Spirit. “For it shall come to pass in the last days,” Joel 2:28, “that I will pour out My Spirit upon all flesh… 60-0515E - Adoption #1
23 And the possession, that, the promise that was given to the Church is not a natural land, but a spiritual land, for we are a royal priesthood, a holy nation… And we are led by the Spirit. Sons and daughters of God are led by the Spirit of God; not by man, but by the Spirit. 60-0518 - Adoption #2
114 Moses, being a type of Christ, led the children up to the promised land, then Moses did not take the children in the promised land. Joshua took the people in and divided up the land. Jesus paid the price, led them up to the Holy Spirit. God sent the Holy Spirit down and He positionally put the church in order, each man, filling him with the Presence of His Being. - 60-0522E - Adoption #4
The promise is the baptism of the Spirit, which is promised all through the Old Testament and New too (see?), the promise: “Behold, I send the promise of My Father upon you…” Peter said that on the day of Pentecost. That is the Promise. The promised land is to live in this land of Holy Spirit. That’s God’s promise for the church, is to live in the power of the Spirit. It’s another world; it’s another land. You have to come out of the conditions that you been in, to come out to live in this promised land, to receive the promise. Remember the promise, “You shall receive power from on high, after this, the Holy Ghost is come upon you…”? - 61-1015M - Questions And Answers
