HIGHWAY 10 THE HIGHWAY TO HIGHER LIVING
A Study of the Ten Commandments.
INTRODUCTION.
Exodus 20:1–17 LSB
1 Then God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. 5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 7 “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. 8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female slave or your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates. 11 “For in six days Yahweh made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the sabbath day and made it holy. 12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. 13 “You shall not murder. 14 “You shall not commit adultery. 15 “You shall not steal. 16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male slave or his female slave or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
MESSAGE.

I. The LAYOUT.

God establishing His covenant with the nation of Isreal.
the LAW codes - The point of such codes is that all the covenant stipulations are appropriate because of the wonderful things that the sovereign has done for the people.
Exodus 20:2 LSB
2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
The law legislated how Israel was to live in order to be blessed by God and used by Him as a kingdom of priests.
The Need for the Ten Commandments.
The Israelites had lived in Egypt for many years and had been accustom to worshipping many gods.
The breakdown of the ten commandments.
The first four commandments are what I call vertical.
Between God and Man
The the last six commandments are what I call horizontal.
Between man and man (person to person).
I. The LAYOUT.

II. The AUTHORITY.

Who Spoke the Words and gave the Ten Commandments.
Exodus 20:1 LSB
1 Then God spoke all these words, saying,
God is the one who gave the commandments not Moses.
The Authority for the commandments comes from the LORD. The phrase “the LORD your God” is repeated 5 times.
exodus 20:2, 5, 7, 10, 12.
Exodus 20:2 LSB
2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
Exodus 20:5 LSB
5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exodus 20:7 LSB
7 “You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Exodus 20:10 LSB
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of Yahweh your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female slave or your cattle or your sojourner who is within your gates.
Exodus 20:12 LSB
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.
God’s Name = YAHWEH
YAHWEH = the LORD
I AM WHO I AM
Exodus 3:13–15 LSB
13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, I am about to come to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you.’ And they will say to me, ‘What is His name?’ What shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 And God furthermore said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘Yahweh, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name from generation to generation.
Yahweh is derived form the berb HAYAH = “to be”
No beginning - no end
Not in time.
Not past, present or future.
He is “JUST IS

II. The AUTHORITY.

III. The POWER.

The power comes from His name first. The fact that HE IS.
God is transcendent above all.
He is the creator of all.
everything else is below Him.
His Holiness.
the standard for all worship and service.
The Holy and righteous nature of God.
“I” personal pronoun.
Exodus 20:2 LSB
2 “I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
God is a person a living personality, not an object or a mere thought.
the First command
Exodus 20:3 LSB
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
Is written with what is know as a negative.
the negative with the imperfect verb expresses the empathic prohibition, one theologian said it like this, “it is best said “you will not.” and has the strongest expectation of obedience.
Before Me.
in front = in the sense of the headed of a living creature.
over God
to His disadvantage.
could mean “in opposition to Me”
CONCLUSION.
Through this commandment we can see God’s nature and who He is.
We also see a pointing to Jesus.
What the law condemned there were provisions for in the laws of sacrifice and feast intended for atonement (Jesus in the New Testament.).
The Law also pointed to Jesus once under Jesus do not return to the Law.
The Law was given to establish the covenant with Israel (the Old Covenant or Old Testament).
Jesus was given to establish the New Covenant or New Testament).
