Hebrews 9:11-28

The Blood Will Never Lose its Power

The Cross is perhaps the most recognizable icon in culture today. It is also perhaps the most widely used icon. Everyone it seems at times, wears a cross. From the obviously religious, to movie and music stars, crosses are everywhere. They are worn in metals, precious and otherwise, made out of gemstones, or out of perishable materials. They are inked on in tattoos, placed on our walls, crosses are everywhere.

In the Protestant expression of Christianity, we prefer the empty cross over the crucifix used by our Catholic brethren. We prefer the empty cross because we don’t want to leave the world with the message that the story ended at the cross. Of course we know that the cross was not the end and that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest supernatural even in human History, rivaled only by the virgin Birth of Jesus. Jesus Christ got up from the grave and so we prefer to wear a simple plain empty cross. However, we have almost sanitized the cross to see it almost as a cake walk for Jesus.

Do not be deceived though, the cross was gruesome. It was violent. It was bloody.

There have been those who have, over the years, in Christianity suggested that preachers and songwriters tone down references to the gruesome image of the blood of Jesus. But if we take out the blood we take out the heart of the gospel. The old sacrificial system in the law established by God was a bloody system. Lambs, goats, dove, oxen were slaughtered for the sin of the people. It was a bloody process. That is why our writer says “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”

Read with me our text

Hebrews 9:11-28

The Old Law required sacrifices for the forgiveness of sin. Goats, lambs, calves, oxen, birds, all used for sacrifice, but their blood was just a salve on the wound of sin. It did not cure the inward infection.

The blood of those animals was an outward covering not an internal cleansing.

Not only did those sacrifices not free us from sin but they did not free us from the bondage to the sacrifices themselves. The one who wanted to please God was left with these “acts of death” over and over in order to serve the living God.

The Old sacrifice lost its power to forgive the moment the offering was given. Immediately another was required. The sacrifice in the old system always lost its power.

Think about it. That sacrifice was powerful. It could appease a just and holy God. It had the power to see our sin forgiven. But the MOMENT the sacrifice was given for the sin we had committed, it was IMMEDIATELY POWERLESS to do anything else!

But Oh the Blood of Jesus

It will NEVER Lose it’s Power

He was offered on the altar of the cross, on a hill called Golgotha, just outside Jerusalem. He was buried in a borrowed tomb and on the 3rd Day he arose, alive and victorious over sin and death. After 40 days he ascended to the right hand of the Father and there he offered himself taking the role of both High Priest and Sacrifice offered.

What Jesus Christ did … Oh the Blood will NEVER LOSE its Power!

V14 says “how much more will the blood of Christ cleanse our consciences … so that we may serve the living God.”

Focus with me for a moment as we worship … can you sing this song

-Oh the Blood of Jesus …

Look with me at the Power of the Blood of Jesus

There IS Power in the Blood, as the hymnwriter wrote, it is wonder working power because In the blood of Jesus there is

1. Power to Forgive

The word Forgive insinuates that there is a debt.

A debt is not ignored someone must bear the cost.

Romans 3:23 says that we all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

We cannot measure up to the Holiness and reputation of God. If He is the measuring stick, we come up short.

Coming up short, creates a debt because Holiness and perfection is what God demands.

Romans 6:23 explains the debt.

The wages of sin is death

Our debt to God is death. But Romans 6:23 thankfully continues …

The free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord

Oh the blood of Jesus, it will NEVER lose its power to Forgive

V12 says that the blood of Jesus “obtained eternal redemption”

Obtained = heuriskohyoo-ris-ko to come upon, to find a thing sought

Redemption = lytrosisloo-tro-sis ransoming, redemption

In English, redemption means “to buy back”

The blood of Jesus buys our forgiveness

Our sin sold us like an indentured slave. It sold us to the ruler of this world. The only way to buy it back was through payment of the debt which is death.

When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden they were told by God that they could eat of any tree in the Garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God told them that the moment they ate of it, they would surely die.

Adam and Eve knew the cost and they chose to strike the deal. By that willful act, death entered our world, just as God has warned. So, we all are slaves to sin and what sin produces is death

James 1:14-15 each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15 after desire has conceived it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

However, the Blood of Jesus has the Power to Buy us Back.

Jesus Christ made us but he also paid our ransom.

In the Garden, Adam and eve sinned and God himself killed the 1st innocent animal to pay for their sin and He made clothing to cover them. How shocking that 1st death must have been as innocent blood covered their sin.

And so, look at the cross. See the innocent bloodshed and know the power of the blood to forgive.

Psalm 49:7-8 no man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom of him 8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough

is costly because the ransom is death.

But Oh the Blood of Jesus.

Mt 20:28 The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life a ransom for many.

1 Tim 2:5-6 There is one mediator between God and men, the man, Christ Jesus 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men

And here in Hebrews 9:15 it says he has died as a ransom to set them free

Oh the Blood will never lose its power to forgive

And in the blood of Jesus there is

2. Power to Give an Inheritance

Romans 8:29-30 those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers 30 those he predestined he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified

So v15 here in Hebrews 9, because we are forknown as his, predestined and called …

“called”= kaleo – called by name, summoned

Called to receive not just eternal forgiveness but an ETERNAL Inheritance

Receive = lambano – take hold of; acquire, receive, collect

Eternal = aionios – eternal, an unlimited duration

Inheritance = kleronomia – an inheritance, property received; what is given as a possession; the eternal blessedness of the consummated Kingdom

This is not referring to just an inheritance but the article “THE” is there, the Greek Word is HO this is Promise of God. This is being in the family of God

The blood of Jesus, when received by us makes us heirs to the Kingdom of Jesus

John 1:12 – yet to all who received him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God

Romans 8:16-17 the Spirit himself testifies with our Spirit that we are God’s children 17 now if we are children then we are heirs – heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ

Co-Heirs – we are heirs to an eternal home in heaven

Co-heirs – to the Resurrection as Jesus is the firstfruits or the firstborn of the resurrection so we will also experience life in Christ Jesus

Co-heirs to transformed bodies because when we see him we will be like him

Co-heirs of a will – remember the word “covenant” is a promise but it also means a testament or will

And when you make out a Will, that Will may promise possessions, treasures, authority, and property but the will means nothing until the death of the maker of the will.

V16 says it is necessary to PROVE the death of the one who made the will

Well, that Friday afternoon on Calvary, after Jesus said “it is finished” and bowed his head in death, then one of those executioners, who were killers by trade, thrust a spear in Jesus’ side and verified his death.

So the blood of Jesus released the terms of the Will.

Remember Jesus, on that Thursday had said that the cup symbolized the New Testament, Covenant, Will in his blood (Luke 22:20)

And the blood will never lose its power to give us an inheritance in Jesus Christ.

Oh the Blood of Jesus …

It washes white as know …

So, the Blood will never lose its power to Forgive

Power to give an Inheritance

And ultimately

3. The Power to Save

V15 says he died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant

V28 says Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him

The Blood will never lose its power to save

Perhaps you are here today and you have thought that there was no more possibility for YOU to receive the salvation of God

I want you to know the Blood will never lose its power to save

Zeph 3:17 the Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you …

The Blood of Jesus is Mighty to save and he saves in three ways

see the totality of the Salvation that is offered you in Jesus Christ

He will save you save us from the

A. Penalty of Sin

I’ve already told you that there was power to forgive our sin. But we aren’t just talking about a financial debt, our sin has a penalty, a consequence. We are under a death sentence. And the Blood of Jesus has the power to remove from us the penalty of sin

John 11:25-26 I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.

And then Jesus asked the critical question of Martha – Do you believe this?

And Martha answered in John 11:27 Yes Lord … I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.

When we believe in Jesus, when we confess him as Lord, knowing that he has died for us and been resurrected from the Dead, Romans 10:9 says we are Saved …

And the penalty of sin is nullified … death is gone Life replaces it

Jesus said

John 10:10 the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but I came that you may have life, and have it to the full

The Blood will never lose its power to take away the penalty of our sin …

And it will never lose its power to Save us from the

B. Power of Sin

In Romans 6 Paul paints the picture. Let me read these verses

Romans 6:4-11- we were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united wit him in his resurrection 6 for we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with that we should no longer be slaves to sin – 7 because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. 8 now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 the death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 in the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus

The Blood will never lose its power to take away the Power that sin has over us

It is not to say that as Christians we cannot sin,

but we no longer HAVE to

Titus 2:11-13a For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 it teaches us to say “no” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age 13while we wait for the blessed hope …

Sin is not our Master and we are not the slave to it any longer because of the Blood of Jesus

It has Power to Save us from the Penalty of sin

The power to save us from the Power of Sin

And one day it will exert its power to save us from

C. the Presence of Sin

We will not live in this world forever, but we will live forever. But if I know Jesus Christ, I have a future separated from the presence of sin.

V28 again - he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him

The Blood will never lose it’s power …

Rev 21:1-7 – Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”

The Blood will never Lose its Power

The Power to Forgive us of our sin is in the Blood of Jesus Christ

The Power to Give us an Inheritance that is Eternal

The Power to Save us from the Penalty, Power, and Presence of Sin

Oh the Blood

Oh The Blood of Jesus

Oh the Blood of Jesus

Oh the Blood of Jesus

It washes white as snow

There’s Power in the Blood of Jesus

There’s Power in the Blood of Jesus

There’s Power in the Blood of Jesus
