A Familiar Story

if you grew up in church you have heard the account
the four friends and their doing everything to get him to Jesus
cut a hole in the roof..
we learn the lesson about doing anything to bring our friend to Jesus..
or we learn about how Jesus can heal
Today I want to concentrate on what Jesus initially said to this man
V 20
The power of God to forgive
Read Luke 5 17-26
Pray

The Scrutiny has started

We have some things to look at first..
when a person of interest appears on the scene the Sanhedrin will send out some observers
they will watch closely and then report back to headquarters.
if there is an alarm then the Sanhedrin will send out more to question the man
Jesus has healed a leper and, the leper has gone to the temple to be ceremonial cleansed
so instead of the sanhedrin getting all exited because of the Messiah being there.
and come running to worship
they send out the spies
and verse this in verse 17
these people were the ones filling the house
blocking the entrance against the paralytic
these people are above every one else so they don’t care about this man
Another thing to look at is at the end of verse 17
There was power present?
if the power was not present could Jesus heal somebody?
Jesus is fully God isn’t he?
Philippians 2:6 LSB
who, although existing in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,
I believe as a man Jesus chose not to use His power as God
as fully man Jesus had to rely on the Holy Spirit for power to do miracles

Jesus Forgives

V 18 ...
V 19....
V 20 your sins are forgiven
V 21 no one can forgive sins but God
they are right
Psalm 51:1–4 LSB
Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the abundance of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And pure when You judge.
When we sin against anybody we are sinning against God
and God is the only one who can forgive
but on what basis can God forgive?
Romans 6:23 (LSB)
For the wages of sin is death,
God is a just God and all sin has to be punished
under the Old Covenant all sin was to be covered by a sacrifice
the blood of an animal covered the sin from Gods sight
the bloody animal skins that God provided to Adam and Eve
to cover their shame
to cover the result of what they had commited
The sinner Able brought by faith an animal sacrifice to God to atone for his sin
Cain on the other hand tried to worship God in his own way and was rejected
and the Old Covenant blood sacrifices were coverings only
in anticipation of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world
The only way God can forgive sin is through the blood of His perfect sacrifice
The Lord Jesus Christ
This man was given the healing for eternity
By grace God has forgiven all of this cripples sins
how was Jesus able to do this?
because of their faith V 20
and when God forgives He ..
Psalm 103:10–13 LSB
He has not dealt with us according to our sins, And He has not rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, So Yahweh has compassion on those who fear Him.
Acts 3:19 LSB
“Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
When God forgives he sends our sin far far away
unlike us who say I’ll forgive but will never forget
I wonder what God thinks when we bring up old sins that He has forgiven...
when God saves gives us a clean heart
changes our heart

Jesus Heals

Jesus knowing what the leaders were thinking asked a question
V 21-23
only God can say your sins are forgiven
only God can say get up and walk to someone who is paralyzed
even today.
Jesus was teaching these men of who Jesus really is
but they have a heart that is a rock as Isaiah tells us
they have one goal and that is to find fault
V 24
I am giving you my credentials
I healed a man that only god could heal
I am the son of man of Daniel
Daniel 7:13 LSB
“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And came near before Him.
Daniel 7:14 LSB
“And to Him was given dominion, Glory, and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations, and men of every tongue Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not be taken away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
this same Jesus that has the authority to forgive
will have a kingship on this earth for ever
V 25
The man got up and left with praise on his lips
V 26
all of them left amazed at what had happened
bu it does not say that any one stayed and by faith asked Jesus to forgive them
like a lot of people at so called healing crusades
go home amazed
but just as lost and going to hell as when they came in
Jesus forgives which is much more valuable than any healing of the body
are you angry at God because He has not healed you?
have you by faith come for forgiveness?
Has he forgiven you? your praise to Him should reach the heavens
You have been given a wonderful gift that should outweigh anything else
Read 1 Cor 15 50-58
I will close with these verses of encouragement
...
bring your friends to Jesus even if you have to cut a hole in a roof
