Hebrews #16 Perseverance - Given or Done? Yes!

Hebrews 10:19-39

Perseverance – Given? Or Done? – YES

It is Mother’s Day today. I am not so much preaching a “Mother’s” or “Lady’s” sermon today. And I do not always preach a topical message like that. However this IS a subject today that is very close to the subject of Mothers.

Today we are talking about Perseverance. And if there is anything that Mother’s usually do or say it is to encourage us to keep going. “Come on, you can do it.” “Don’t give up, don’t give in.” “Hang in there baby.” “Forget about the past.” Those are phrases that are common for Mothers.

There is a poem that says

Go On!

One step won’t take you very far;

You’ve got to keep on walking;

One word won’t tell folks who you are;

You’ve got to keep on talking;

One inch won’t make you very tall;

You’ve got to keep on growing;

One deed won’t do it all;

You’ve got to keep on going.

There is a Greek Word – hypomones - hoop-om-on-ay steadfastness, constancy, endurance – the characteristic of a person who is not swerved from their deliberate purpose and loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings.

In English Persevere = to continue in a course of action in spite of difficulty or with little or no indication or success

And so with the thought of perseverance in mind, read with me our text in Hebrews chapter 10.

READ Hebrews 10:36

Keep your finger there and we will read down through the text and learn more about Perseverance

Some pretty powerful stuff we have talked about the last two weeks here in our Study.

We have talked about the Blood of Jesus and the ability of his sacrifice to forgive us, to bring us into the family of God and to rescue us from the penalty, power, and presence of Sin.

Having understood the Power of the Blood of Jesus, then we moved to the sacrifice itself the vehicle for the shedding of his blood, the Cross of Calvary.

We looked last week at the Old Testament sacrifices and how they pointed toward our sin but though addressing our sin, they did not eliminate our sin and so our Lord, the Son of God had to come, incarnate given the name Jesus, Jehovah Saves.

And Jesus Christ became our sacrifice, the quality of his sacrifice unparalleled as he died ONCE for all, presenting himself before the throne of God and thus securing our forgiveness of sin, changing us from inside to out and eliminating the need for a sacrifice.

So when we look to the cross of Christ, when we understand the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us, when we understand that the Eternal One, Creator of Time and Space, left heaven, set aside his privileges, came to earth, submitted himself to our weaknesses, was despised and rejected, was arrested for being the Son of God, was beaten, tortured, and forced to carry his own cross to Calvary where he was crucified, we MUST RESPOND with PERSEVERANCE … We must continue on.

But the question that I posed for you today is … In Christ and in the Christian faith, is Perseverance something that is GIVEN to us or is it Something that we do … and I answer YES!

Four things, quickly then, today as we are enjoined to Persevere.

First of all see

1. Perseverance Provided

Read Hebrews 10:19-23

The interesting thing about Perseverance for the believer is that you can’t make it until you’ve made it. You can’t persevere until you have perseverance ….

Now does that sound like double talk?

Well it isn’t really but is just a statement of reality.

When verse 23 says “hold to the hope we profess” it is not entreating us to hang on tightly for fear of losing it. He is giving a foundation for other areas of perseverance. The hope is NOT based on us so in the midst of other things that are done to us or things that we may or may NOT do … there is only ONE ANCHOR for our soul and that is the “hope we profess”

You need something to hold onto in the Storms of life?

Hold on to the thing that is certain

If you are in a storm you better anchor to something that won’t be blown away

If you are facing the decay of disease and death, you better you better hold on to a hope that will not decay.

So our writer begins saying “Therefore … since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place … by a new and living way … since we have a great priest … let us draw near to God”

A. The way to Perseverance has been provided for us

Considering what we have learned about the Blood of Jesus

Considering the Cross of Christ

Considering that He is our Great High Priest…

Therefore … Since we have confidence … perseverance comes because of confidence … To Enter … I like this … “by a new and living way”

The word there for “new” - prophatos pros-fat-os - freshly killed, new recent

We have confidence to enter God’s Most Holy Place because of the Fresh Sacrifice of Jesus Christ

Heb 4:16 told us that if we will draw near we can receive mercy and find grace. But the problem is if we are unable to draw near then we can’t receive Mercy and Grace …

But the Blood of Jesus provided for us the way

How then do we draw near?

With Sincere Heart

With Faith

Hearts Sprinkled

1) I look at what Christ did for me, revealed to me by the Holy Spirit and my heart is warmed, inspired, encouraged, wooed, and I come to him with a heart of love.

2 Chron 16:9 says “the eyes of the Lord (are looking for those) whose hearts are completely his

Jesus told us the greatest command is to love God with our HEART soul mind and strength

Coming with my heart

2) Exercising Faith

Heb 11:6 says without faith it is impossible to please God because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him

If I come to him with my heart and faith … find then we will be in the state of

3) Having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience

Sincerity of Heart

Exercising of Faith are something we do toward God

But HAVING OUR HEARTS SPRINKLED is something that is DONE for us. The Word is PASSIVE in that it is done for us not something we do

And so because we have responded with hearts full of love and faith

The Blood of Christ covers us

4) And then we are washed with pure water

He has sprinkled us He has forgiven us …

He has cleansed us and made us clean

1 John 1:9 if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness

And all of that completed in us is HOPE

Hebrews 6:18-19 says we have fled from our own way and grabbed hold of the HOPE that has been offered to us … and that this hope is the anchor of our soul.

It is a hope we can do nothing for

Hebrew 6:12 says the way we receive this hope is through faith and patience … in other words we exercise faith in the promise of God and then wait for him to give what he promised

Hebrew 13:14 says - we are looking for the city that is to come

Not the city that might come

We will make it we will persevere in our faith to the end because it is GIVEN to us by God because we have placed our faith in Christ with a sincere heart

And so the ability to MAKE it in Christ is ours because we have been MADE into the image of Christ.

2 Cor 5:17 – if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has passed the new has come

And he gives to them

John 10:28 Jesus says that all who come to him he will - give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of his hand

John 17:2 Jesus prayed to the Father - you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him

John 4:14 – whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life

Oh how good the news that We can persevere because it has been provided for us in Christ Jesus through his sacrificial blood, sprinkled over hearts in love with him, full of faith in the promises and provision of God.

So, does that answer the question, is Perseverance GIVEN or DONE?

No, not fully because it is a question with two answers.

In regards to our salvation, Perseverance, Praise God, is GIVEN when we receive him … But we are still here, we are still living, life is still a struggle, storms rise up, persecution comes at us … so what are you going to do?

Quickly notice the other three references to Perseverance … It has been provided and see then

2. Perseverance Provoked

Read Hebrews 10:23-25

The Perfect Eternal Persevering Salvation that we have been given DEMANDS a response from us

Perseverance encourages us

… is in the PRESENT TENSE which means KEEP ON HOLDING FAST

UNSWERVINGLY – aklines ak-lee-nace steady, unwavering, bending to neither side

I am an PROVOKED our encouraged to go on without swaying

And our Perseverance encourages us to persevere

A. in Worshipping Together

Not forsaking = not leaving behind or leaving in the lurch (unsteady staggering movement)

Because we have security and perseverance … it would be against the gratitude we have toward God, to leave our assembly of fellow believers in an unsteady motion, staggering

  • Folks, because it is in our text I need to speak to this.

Our response to the Perfect Work of Christ in our Salvation should be for us to Persevere in encouraging one another

When we call ourselves the body of Christ, we need to act like a body.

  • I woke up the Monday morning after the Super Bowl in 2005 and I couldn’t pick up my right arm. My right rotator cuff was torn.
  • My arm left me in a lurch. And my WHOLE BODY felt it. With my right shoulder bad, my left shoulder and arm had to do a double share. My left arm / shoulder isn’t as strong as my right. I started having a flare up of pain in my left shoulder because of a condition that is normally quiet when both arms work together. My point is that my shoulder decided to bail on me and it left my body in a lurch and I lived with pain for months until my right shoulder got stronger and began pulling its weight.

Folks we are told not to FORSAKE – leave one another in a lurch by leaving or even just “taking a break” from this assembling together

2 Tim 4:10 tells us about such a believer that was like my shoulder … (here one day and gone the next) …

Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica.

When we forsake it is a question of what we love more.

Sometimes it is the World,

Sometimes it is leisure,

Sometimes it is work

Sometimes it is just a little extra sleep

Let me tell you when my right shoulder went out, my left arm didn’t want to work

When my left shoulder didn’t want to work, my back bore the stress

When my back was hurting … Well you get the picture

We are provoked to Persevere because it encourages one another and when we forsake it DIScourages

When you leave your post of service

When you decide not to support the ministries through attendance, giving, prayer, and service, it hurts the body and it discourages the body

B. So Consider how to spur one another

It is not so much MY job but YOUR Job to SPUR one another …

The word SPUR in the NIV is PROVOKE in other translations

Paroxusmos par-ox-oos-mos to sharpen, stimulate, to incite

Prov 27:17 as iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another

Folks things aren’t easy or perfect in relationships. Things aren’t perfect in church. Sometimes we irritate one another, we challenge each other,

But that is iron sharpening iron

And when we forsake the sharpening influence of gathering together, we all get dull in the faith

I can’t sharpen a knife without striking it against something else.

We encourage one another to persevere or to shrink back

We encourage to continue or discourage to fade away.

The Busy Bee

  • The bee has been aptly described as “busy.” To produce one pound of honey, the bee must visit 56,000 clover heads. Since each head has 60 flower tubes, a total of 3,360,000 visits are necessary to give us that pound of honey for the breakfast table. Meanwhile, that worker bee has flown the equivalent of three times around the world.
  • To produce one tablespoon of honey for our toast, the little bee makes 4,200 trips to flowers. He makes about ten trips a day to the fields, each trip lasting twenty minutes average and 400 flowers. A worker bee will fly as far as eight miles if he cannot find a nectar flow that is nearer.

Therefore, when you feel that persistence is a difficult task, think of the bee.

Perseverance is DONE for us by Christ Jesus

Perseverance is PROVOKED as we continue gathering together sharpening one another continuing

And when we are in fellowship with God, knowing that we will persevere in our salvation and we are encouraging one another provoking perseverance … then we can experience

3. Perseverance in Persecution

Read Hebrews 10:32-34

“Wait a minute … what did he just say? Persecution?”

“Oh I don’t do persecution”

Persecution has been the norm for Christians for the entirety of the last 2000 years. For People of God for ALL of creation since the serpent on Eve and Cain on Able

John 15:18 Jesus said – if the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first

Some report that 100 million Christians are being persecuted worldwide today so we cannot be surprised when we are persecuted

Do we cry “woe is me”?

Jesus said

Matt 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I will not play down the persecution you may feel at work or at home because it is real to you. But whatever you face, you can persevere because Christ has Created you to persevere

Some of the greatest words in the Bible are “It came to pass”

Persecution isn’t eternal … Relationship with God through Christ is Eternal.

That’s why Paul said

2 Cor 4:8-9

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, perplexed but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed

David before he became King persevered Saul’s attacks because he had been anointed King so he knew his future and he could persevere

Paul and Silas were singing prison because they knew they were FREE in Christ

Martyrs for thousands of years has sung, and testified, and withstood sword, flames, lions, extortion and extermination for the cause of Christ and remained TRUE because they KNOW they have been GIVEN Perseverance so they can DO Perseverance

That’s why Jesus said

Matthew 5:11-12 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Thomas á Kempis said "there is no means of escaping from tribulation and sorrow, except to bear them patiently"

The Word Persevere means

i.e. Going through Severity is Perseverance

Persevere because we know what is to come

Because IN a Little While … New Heaven, New Earth, New Bodies, perfect relationship with God and one another

Perseverance provided

Perseverance provoked

Perseverance in Persecution

And that leads us to the final encouragement … he said all that to say this

READ Hebrews 10:35-36

4. Perseverance Persuaded

vv 35-36

the NIV said “don’t throw away your confidence”

The Young’s Literal says CAST NOT AWAY YOUR BOLDNESS

Boy that may very well be the greatest problem we have in the church today

We have tossed aside our boldness

Not obnoxiousness … BOLDNESS

That is a willingness to speak

A willingness to persevere

A willingness to share

A willingness to suffer

A willingness to BE who we are already in Christ

Don’t Throw away your Boldness New Life

If you HAVE thrown away your boldness,

then pick it back up and persevere in Faithfulness

Don’t throw it away because you will miss the REWARD

Like a ball team that loses it’s edge in the fourth quarter or the 9th inning and lose the win

Don’t throw away your boldness

Persevere so you don’t LOSE the reward

Perseverance is Given and DONE for us in Christ Jesus for our salvation

But there are things WE are told to do …

Keep on gathering strengthening and encouraging each other

Keep on through persecution

Because it is only for a little while

V 39 says those who shrink back are destroyed

That word apoleia ap-o-li-adestruction, waste, ruin

When we shrink back it is ultimately a WASTE … it destroys what we have accomplished

Persevere because it has been given to you to persevere

No matter the struggle

No matter the strife

No matter the challenge

For in a very little while, ‘

“he who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.”

The reason you can make it is because you have already made it

The reason you can persevere in persecution is because you know that you will persevere to Eternal Life because it is already there. It’s like standing in front of an open door and asking, “can I make it across the threshold?”

Sure you can
