Background

If we have not had the pleasure of meeting my name is John Colunga and I have the privilige of serving as lead pastor here at New Day Pasadena
I also have the privilige of bringing this weeks sermon
So if you have your Bibles, please turn to Psalm 110
Today is the second sermon in our six week sermon series in the book of Psalms
And the series name is On Repeat
You see, we want to repeat and know the Psalms in our minds and in our hearts
The Psalms are not a collection of outdated, meaningless, poems
Rather, they are a blueprint, a model for how we are to live, how our attitudes should be, and how our actions should reflect them
And depending on who you talk to and who you read - The Psalms are usually divided between 5-8 different kinds of Psalms
So for us, we will be looking at 6 different categories which are
Wisdom Psalms
Royal Psalms
Lament Psalms
Thanksgiving Psalms
Pilgrimage Psalms
and Enthronement Psalms
And each Sunday we will talk about one of these types specifically and will look at a Psalm that fits into that category
Last week, we looked at Wisdom Psalms and this week we will look at Royal Psalms
Royal Psalms
Royalty is often reffered to with Kingship and that is exactly what a Royal Psalm is about
A Royal Psalm has to do with the anointed King and the lineage of the Kings
And what we will find is that these Psalms ultimately point to the eternal King Jesus
These Psalms will have praises, thankgiving, and confessions towards the King
If you are taking notes, a few Royal Psalms 2, 18, 20, 21, 45, 72, 101, 132, and 144:1-11.
King David
And most of these Royal Psalms are written by King David
It is important to remember that God made a covenant to King David
And if youll recall when we were talking a lot about covenants in the book of Genesis
We know that God always upholds and fulfills his covenants
That God is incapable of breaking his covenant - it is not in his nature
In 2 Samuel 7:8-16 we find God giving his covenant to King David
Make his name great (v. 9);
Establish a home for Israel (v.10).
Keep the people from oppression (v. 10);
Give David rest from his enemies (v. 11).
Establish a house for David through his offspring (v. 11-14).
Allow David’s son to build God’s temple (v. 13).
Never take His love from him or his offspring (v. 15).
Lastly, God says, “Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever” (2 Samuel 7:16).
And so David - clings to this covenant
David is unsure how this will happen
David probably doesn’t fully grasp the spiritual implications of this covenant
But what David knows is that it was God who chose Isreal as his people
It was God who delieverd the Israelites from Egypt
It was God who was faithful in bringing the people to the promise land
That is is God who is eternal
So King David believes in faith and in trust that even after David passes away - God will fulfill his covenant
Psalm 110
And so David writes Psalm 110 and many of the other Psalms with this covenant in mind
And what is interesting is that Psalm 110 is the most quoted Psalm in the New Testament as
Verse 1 of Psalm 110 is the most quoted verse
Of all of the old testament scriptures, teachings, commands, it is Psalm 110 which is used most frequently
And then we find that Hebrews 7:11-28 is basically a commentary on verse 4
So with this emphasis in mind, lets read Psalm 110 and the verses concerning the Royalty of Jesus
If you are able to stand, I ask that you please do so for the reading of God’s word. I’ll read it as you follow along -
Psalm 110 “A Psalm of David. The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours. The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.”
This is the Word of the Lord, you may now be seated

Lord to Lord

Jesus is Lord
Many of you know that I am a fan of the Texas Longhorns
And so by extention - I am not a fan of a team who I will not mention because they will break out in obnoxious noise making
And that also means that I am not a fan of Oklahoma University
But I found myself rooting for the Oklahoma Universtiy Softball Team
You see I have been a fan of their coach, Patty Gasso
Iv’e known that she is a Christian but I did not realize that God is using her in a big way with her team
You see before this past week, her team had won back to back championships
And they were about to play for a third
And at the press conference a reporter asked three ladies of the Oklahoma team how do they find joy in the ups and downs of softball and with the pressure
And the first girl responds that the only way you can have a joy that doesnt fade away is from the Lord - That winning games can bring happieness but that happieness fades away and so true and everlasting joy is from the Lord
And the second girl responds that her freshman year when she won the championship with Oklahoma, after the game she didnt feel joy because the next day she was like now what? She didnt feel filled and so she had to find Christ in that
She said that now, win or lose, she has purpose and joy because her purpose is in Christ
And then the third girl says that their slogan is eyes up and they point upward but really they just have their eyes on Christ - and that this game is giving them the opportunity to glorify God
And once the team was all in all that, it changed everything - that they live to eximplify the Kingdom
And I bring this up and say this because everyone wants to win - everyone wants to have victory
And what David hears through the power of the Holy Spirit is that Christ will be victorious
It is declared, it is fixed, it is solidified that Jesus will be the victorious King
King David starts this Psalm off by saying The Lord says to my Lord:
And I want you to realize that the L in both Lord’s is capitalized
This means that these Lords are equal - They both have authority
And in the english language this can cause confusion
But in the original Hebrew language this makes perfect sense
The Hebrew word for the first Lord is different from the second
So the first Lord means Yahweh which also means the God of the Israelites
And the Hebrew for the second Lord is Adonai which does mean my Lord
And the “my Lord” is Jesus
And there were many who thought that King David was referring to his offspring
And so Jesus, in his teaching had to dispell this thinking - Matthew 22:41-45
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet” ’? 45 If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
Jesus stumps the pharisees because in no earthly Kingdom does the King call his son, the future King, my Lord
Rather, it is the other way around, the son is suppossed to call the Father, the true King, My Lord
But King David knows that this Adonai is the one who will fullfill Yahwehs covenant
This Adonai will be the one who sits on the throne forever
And so King David refers to this future King of Glory as my Lord
Yahweh speaks
Yahweh speaks to Adonai (Jesus) and says - “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” The Lord sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies! Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.
Yahweh - The God of Covenants will keep his covenant
And of this, King Jesus needs to only sit as Yahweh delivers his enemies unto him
God will establish Jesus as the King of Victory and will be set as ruler over all
And we must remember that is rule is both divine by nature and is over human nature
Jesus being fully God and fully man is the only one who could live a perfect life
Jesus was the only one who could conqure sin and death on the cross
And Jesus is the only one who could redeem his people through his death and resurrection
Peter refers to Jesus as the Messiah in this Psalm in Acts 2:34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,”
It wasn’t David who ascended but it was Jesus
And it is Jesus who is currently sitting at the right hand of God
And so it is important for us to remember that although evil and wickedness still exists in our present world, it is bound and has no power over King Jesus
King Jesus is divine, Jesus is part of the triune God
And because Jesus is God who fulfilled his responsibility of redeeming his people
At the appropriate time, God will make all things new again and there will be no evil left
All evil and wickedness will be conquered and under Jesus’ feet
But all those who put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ as Savior and as Lord,
They will worship and exalt Christ as King
And just as we cannot possibly count the amount of dew drops in the morning, so we will not be able to count all those who are made new in Christ and worshiping him
And then God effectively says - and you can trust me
Yahweh is sure
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath. He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs over the wide earth. He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.”
Why can we trust God?
Because his plan is perfect
Check this out - Most of the time in scripture there are three seperate offices - Prophet, Priest, and King.
And most men were either one or the other
But what we do find in scripture is that Melchizedek was a King who also acted in the roles of a priest
Genesis 14:18 “And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)”
Jesus, Is the Priest King for his people
His body broken as the bread is broken
And his blood poured out as the wine is poured
And in 1 Corinthians 11:26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
When we commune together with the Lords Supper
We are remembering Jesus as the Messiah, as the priest King
We are proclaiming that we believe that he died but that it is not the end - that he is coming back
And thats exactly what King David is writing about here
That right now Jesus is sitting on his throne but there will be a time when he will have to get up to get to his final and eternal throne
We talked about this in our heaven and hell series - that the current heaven is not the final heaven
It is an intermediate heaven until Jesus comes,
And when he comes, judgement will be carried out, all things will be made new, and Jesus will sit eternally on this throne forever!
And I dont want you to miss this, that we will one day be there with Jesus as he rules eternally!
This is what it means that the Lord is sure and wont turn change his mind
That Jesus is enough and if you have Jesus then you have everything!
You are eternally secure with the King!
It is my hope and prayer that if you have viewed the Psalms as boring, or unecessary, or minor in comparison to other texts that this Psalm changes your mind
The Old Testament and the New Testament works together so intricately
There are so many connections between the two and the beauty of the Psalms is that they tie both of them together
I am not sure about all the new Bibles coming out but it used to be that you just open the Bible in the Middle and you will be in the book of Psalms
The beauty of the Psalms is that they proclaim Jesus and hail him as King long before he was even born!
God’s plan of redemption was so perfect and was conveyed through the Holy Spirit so clearly
No man could make this up nor can any man escape the truth and the authority of it
So what does this mean for us?

Application

Rejoice in the fact that Jesus is Lord
Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice
Your joy, your fulfillment cannot come from anything other than God
Anything else will leave you empty and unsatisfied
Rejoice that no matter what happens in life, you are eternally secured with the everlasting King
Rejoice that althogh evil is still around us, it has no hold over us
Rejoice that God’s covenants are sure and that his plan of redemption is perfect
Live kingdom minded
Do not be afraid to lose - Do not be afraid to have conversations about Jesus
Do not be afraid of rejection, alienation, or persecution
Rather, seek to do the work of God and to use the gifts and talents he has given you
Love others, serve others, pray for opportunities to interact with others
Listen, you cant be afraid to lose because you have nothing to lose
In the physical state of the world there is evil and that evil is going to oppose
That evil is going to try to corrupt, decieve, and will try to burry you in guilt and shame
But when you are living like there is nothing to lose, when you live for the Kingdom knowing that there is everything to gain - then take it
And friends this is so hard!!!!
What happens when your family member is taken from you?
What happens when you lose your job?
What happens when you are hurting so bad that you cant even get our of bed?
We are going to have human emotions, human reactions, and human feelings towards these things
But even in the midst of this all you can rejoice, breathe, take your next step -
Because the same Spirit that led King David to hear this take place, the same spirit that was in Paul,
Is the same Spirit that is in you if you have put your faith and trust in Jesus
Fix your eyes on the sure Victory
Jesus is the sure victory
Jesus is the sure King
Jesus is the sure God
If you haven’t put your faith and trust in him - I want to encourage you not to delay
When I die, I know for a fact that I am going to heaven -
And I know for a fact that its not because of anything that I have done
But that my Lord and Savior - my Priestly King laid down is life for me
He suffered and died that my wicked and sinful heart could be changed
So that I dont live by my own ways, but that I live with my eyes fixed on Him and His ways
For His ways, his plans, his victory is sure
And if you are here today and you have already put your faith and trust in him,
My question is this: What is distracting you from keeping your eyes on him?
The world will try to pull us a thousand different ways
Our own excuses will be used to try to justify our stunted growth
And when this happens is when the lies and the deceit of the evil one comes out
And will try to make you think that you are unworthy
That you are too far gone
That your sin is too much
And when those lies and deceptions come about -
Fix your eyes on the one who says that he will never leave you nor forsake you
Fix your eyes on the promise that you are child of God and an heir to the throne
And when you confess and repent of your sins, he is sure to forgive and make you righteouss
