Sermon Topic: Ascencion /Himmelfahrt

Text: Luke 24:44-53; Acts 1:1-11

Luke 24:46-53

46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

Feelings: Today is a very important day for our congregation.

·        A mountain top experience for the baptismal candidates

·        A time to be reminded that Jesus returned to His heavenly Father with the promise to come again

Concern of sermon:

·        Christ’s work on earth was done

·        Our work as disciples in the Power of the Holy Spirit has begun

Develop major concern of the text.

·        Jesus appeared to the disciples for fourty days after the resurrection

·        During this time he provided many convincing proofs that he had risen from the dead

Significance of the Ascencion of Jesus into heaven

1.     Separation: the Ascencion was the bodily separation of our Lord from his disciples

·        He was no longer in their midst

·        Normally we would anticipate tears and sadness as a result

·        Instead they rejoiced and were praising God

·        The Lord’s departure brought in a time of even greater intimacy through the ministry of the Holy Spirit

·        “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:20)

2.     Completion: the ascencion symbolized that the work of Jesus for the Salvation of mankind was completed. He sat down at the right hand of the father in his Majesty and glory (Heb 1:3).

3.     Glorification: When our Lord returned to the Father, it was with splendor and glory. “Therefore God exalted him, and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, through whom we find salvation.”

4.     Confirmation: the ascencion was a confirmation of Christ’s person and work. He returned to the Father. In this his claim that the Father had sent  him was confirmed and vindicated.

The Ascencion is also a confirmation of our faith and assurance in Christ. “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a sure and steadfast hope [because] Jesus became a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek” (Heb. 6:19-20)

5.     Transition: The ascencion serves as a connecting link between:

·        work of Christ in Salvation & our sanctification

·        Gospels & Epistles

·        Whats accomplished in Christ & begun/ongoing  in the Power of the Holy Spirit

·        Role shift “Christ Savior” to “Christ High Priest”

6.     Anticipation: The ascencion creates a sense of expectation that He will return just as he departed

·        In glory & majesty

Importance of the Ascencion of Christ for us:

It is the introduction of a new phase of His ministry through His church, empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Today we are here to give witness to the Power of the risen Christ.

·        To hear stories of God’s activity through the Holy Spirit in the lives of people.

·        To feel and experience his presence with us now

·        To be reassured that Christ’s work of salvation is completed

·        To bring glory and honor to the one who is worthy

·        To be reassured of our undying hope that we have a High Priest who represents us with God

·        To be encouraged to take the baton of the Gospel and carry on the work of sharing the Good News with all the world.

·        To be on our watch in anticipation of Christ’s return in glory.

! Himmelfahrt

Apg 1,1       Die erste Rede habe ich getan, lieber Theophilus, von alle dem, das Jesus anfing, beides, zu tun und zu lehren,

Apg 1,2       bis an den Tag, da er aufgenommen ward, nachdem er den Aposteln, welche er hatte erwählt, durch den Heiligen Geist Befehl getan hatte,

Apg 1,3       welchen er sich nach seinem Leiden lebendig erzeigt hatte durch mancherlei Erweisungen, und ließ sich sehen unter ihnen vierzig Tage lang und redete mit ihnen vom Reich Gottes.

Apg 1,4       Und als er sie versammelt hatte, befahl er ihnen, daß sie nicht von Jerusalem wichen, sondern warteten auf die Verheißung des Vaters, welche ihr habt gehört (sprach er) von mir;

Apg 1,5       denn Johannes hat mit Wasser getauft, ihr aber sollt mit dem Heiligen Geist getauft werden nicht lange nach diesen Tagen.

Apg 1,6       Die aber, so zusammengekommen waren, fragten ihn und sprachen: HERR, wirst du auf diese Zeit wieder aufrichten das Reich Israel?

Apg 1,7       Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Es gebührt euch nicht, zu wissen Zeit oder Stunde, welche der Vater seiner Macht vorbehalten hat;

Apg 1,8       sondern ihr werdet die Kraft des Heiligen Geistes empfangen, welcher auf euch kommen wird, und werdet meine Zeugen sein zu Jerusalem und in ganz Judäa und Samarien und bis an das Ende der Erde.

Apg 1,9       Und da er solches gesagt, ward er aufgehoben zusehends, und eine Wolke nahm ihn auf vor ihren Augen weg.

Apg 1,10     Und als sie ihm nachsahen, wie er gen Himmel fuhr, siehe, da standen bei ihnen zwei Männer in weißen Kleidern,

Apg 1,11     welche auch sagten: Ihr Männer von Galiläa, was stehet ihr und sehet gen Himmel? Dieser Jesus, welcher von euch ist aufgenommen gen Himmel, wird kommen, wie ihr ihn gesehen habt gen Himmel fahren.

Was ist die Bedeutung der Himmelfahrt im Leben und Wesen der christlichen Gemeinde?

1.     Scheidung der Jünger vom Herrn

2.     Beendigung des Erlöesungswerks Jesus auf Erden

3.     Verherrlichung: “Name über alle Namen – Jesus”

4.     Bestätigung, daß Jesus Gottes Sohn ist

5.     Aufgaben-weitergabe: vom Sohn zu den Jüngern durch die Macht des Heiligen Geistes

6.     Erwartung seines Wiederkommens: “wie ihr ihn habt gen Himmel fahren sehen” - Verherrlicht
