Jesus Saves

The mission of Jesus is to preach the good news
the miracles was only to prove to the world that He was the Messiah
so Jesus came to His home town to start His mission by proclaiming who He is
Luke 4:18–19 LSB
THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.”
He and Peter on the boat and the amount of fish that was caught
opened Peters and James ,John , and Andrew’s eyes to the fact that Jesus is God
then Jesus cleansed the leper
Forgave the paralytic
but now here is somebody who is so bad that the pharisee wont let even his shadow touch his robe
in Jewish society they are the worst of the worst
the tax collector
this job is bought from the Roman government
these tax collectors are mob hit men
they will send their thugs out to collect or break someones arm
all the Roman government wants is a certain amount
the rest that they collect is pure profit
so these men were considered the dregs of society
the worst of the sinners
un-savable
their only friends were other tax collectors
Jesus is going to do the unthinkable
He is going to save this man
Jesus is going to give this man a new life
a life that will be poor in money but rich in every spiritual blessings
Read Luke 5 27-32

The Effectual Call

this calling is from the Holy Spirit to the persons heart
without the Holy Spirit changing our heart of stone to a heart of flesh
without The quickening / making alive
because we were dead in our trespasses and sins
children of wrath
without being born from above
without the conviction of the Holy Spirit
these people that have this calling in their heart from Jesus will be saved
Romans 8:30 LSB
and those whom He predestined, He also called; and those whom He called, He also justified; and those whom He justified, He also glorified.
in the New testament the term “The Called” and “those who are called” are used as titles for believers
Romans 1:6 LSB
among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
Romans 8:28 LSB
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
1 Corinthians 1:24 LSB
but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Hebrews 9:15 LSB
And for this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the trespasses that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Synonym for called
1 Corinthians 1:18 LSB
For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.
the un-called the gospel is foolishness
but to the called - the power of God to salvation
the gospel is blinded to the un-called
2 Corinthians 4:3–5 LSB
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this age has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for the sake of Jesus.
this calling is the means which a sinner is brought into salvation
and if the sinner is called of God to salvation then he will be saved
1 Corinthians 1:2 LSB
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called as saints, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
this is just a small portion of the subject of Effectual Call
when we see Jesus call this tax collector
considered the dregs of society
this man who is classified as a sinner by society
the calling of Jesus is life changing when he said...

Follow Me

Jesus is now calling Matthew as a saint
V 27
I wonder what the other disciples were thinking
they have all been to Matthew’s tax booth
the extortion and thievery they endured at the hands of this evil man
Don’t you know Jesus this man is the worst of the worst
he is not worthy to be with us, and one of yours
What is the result of the Effectual calling of Jesus?
V 28 Repentance, and faith
the have a godly sorrow of their sin
Ezekiel 36:31 LSB
“Then you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves to your own faces for your iniquities and your abominations.
and their sin they begin to hate
they begin to see their sin the same way that God sees it
Psalm 119:128 LSB
Therefore I deem all Your precepts concerning everything to be right, I hate every false way.
Confessing the Faith: The 1689 Baptist Confession for the 21st Century (XV. Repentance to Life and Salvation)
15:5 God has made full provision through Christ in the covenant of grace to preserve believers in their salvation. Thus, although there is no sin so small that it is undeserving of damnation, yet there is no sin so great that it will bring damnation on those who repent.
V 28 Levi left everything
he left his very lucrative job
by the next day the tax booth was probably filled by his successor
V 29 he wanted all of his friends to meet Jesus also
V 30 why does Jesus associate with the riff raff
this is the same people that seen Jesus forgive the cripple
the observers who will report back to Jerusalem
now he is forgiving the tax collector?!!

Sick And Sinners

V 31
the sick don’t wait until they are better to go to the Dr
V 32
Jesus calls sinners
Jesus calls those who know they need a Savior
those of the religious elite were self righteous
they did not see themselves as in need of forgiveness
Matthew on the other hand saw himself as
poor in spirit
spiritually bankrupt
in chains to sin
blinded to the spiritual light
and oppressed by his sin
ans when the call from the Savior came
he jumped at the opportunity
and left everything behind and followed Jesus
I Jesus calling to your heart right now?
don’t put off another day
come to Jesus and be saved
be willing to leave all behind to follow the King
