Ferd Funk Farewell Speech  – Springfield Heights MC

May 24, 2009 – 4pm

Liebe Gemeinde,

Man könnte sagen,

beim Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home

Ich will euch ermutigen,

Allow me to switch gears and say a few words in English.

It is hard to put in words the emotions

that overwhelm us at this time.

Man, these gifts are awesome!

If I had known this, I would have quit long time before!

Or maybe not.

I guess this comes with staying a long time.

I guess if I had quit at the first sign of trouble

I would have left with a bag of peanuts or something.

But, seriously.

I’m speechless.

This is too much!

We will put these gifts to good use,

and we will think of you often when we enjoy them.

As I mentioned before,

this moment is filled with a mixture of sadness,

expectation and a lot of gratitude.

I would venture to say

it is a feeling of satisfaction and completion.

It is indeed a gift from God to able to finish well.

And I have felt the support,

the prayers, the encouragement and teamwork

from so many of you right to this day.

To God be the Glory for that!

I won’t mention any names,

because there are simply to many.

You all have done your part

to build the body of Christ here at Springfield Heights. And I am filled with deep gratitude

for the authority you entrusted to me

as your pastor

and your spiritual leader for these many years.

I want to say one long overdue

personal and public thank you to my family.

Hedi, Karis and Mattias,

it was not always easy for you to be a pastors’ family.

You were always aware that the people were watching you,

and that they were measuring their pastor

by his family’s behavior.

Thank you for always being transparent,

always being yourselves

and not putting on a show

to make your pastor-dad look good.

My love for you cannot be put in words.

Each one of you have also enriched this congregation

in ways that cannot be measured.

I love you for that!

Dear friends,

we will go from here carrying a rich heritage

of spiritual friendships,

gifts of love, forgiveness,

compassion, friendship,

and so much more.

And we will face the future knowing

that we are better people

because each one of you has touched our lives.

We also rejoice with you

that God has provided you with new leaders

in James Schellenberg and Jack Dyck.

And I ask of you,

that you would extend to them and their families

the same degree of trust,

love and friendship

that you have shown to us.

And don’t forget about Kyle & Ashley.

I don’t know if you are aware

that Kyle is your most senior pastor now.

I could go on for a long time,

and bore you with many stories

of significant moments in our time of ministry here.

But instead,

I will ask Jeremy to play a slideshow that I prepared.

Each picture tells a story of the journey we shared.

This is our gift to you with love.

Thank you!
