GO!

Have you ever been told to go? I’m sure you have, go to school, go to your room when you were young. Maybe, go to work, go to the doctor when older.
What have you been told to “go” do that had significance in your life?
In the bible there are lot’s of “go” let me give you just a few
Gen46:3 Jacob was told do not fear to “go” to Egypt
Deu11:8 Israel was told to “go” take the land they had been given
Mk6:45: Jesus told His disciples to get in the boat and “go” to the other side.
Some others were
Go into the city
God into the village
The most famous, or known one is
Jesus commanded a “go” that many know as the “great commission” (Mt28:19-20)
Matthew 28:19–20 NASB95
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Go! Picture inserted here
The term “go” is not just go, it is as you are going, and what you are to do as you are going. It is a continuous thing.
We are all called to be disciples of Jesus, but are we all truly disciples of Jesus?
Most will say they believe in Jesus
Many will even attend the assembly, but does that make them a disciple?
The aim of this study is to answer the questions
What is a disciple
What is the proof of a disciple
What are the rewards of being a disciple and
The beginning of becoming a disciple.
Defining disciple
He is a learner, follower of a teacher.
Notice not just learns but follows, but also adheres to the teaching
That is why Paul said 1Cor11:1 (Look it up) - Jesus was Paul’s teacher and he followed the teaching of his teacher.
Goal of a disciple be like the teacher (Lk6:40)
turn to and read
Lk6:40 “40 “A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.”
Another goal is to be conformed to image of His Son (Rom8:29)
turn to and read Rom8:29 “29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;”
Do you want a closer walk with Jesus picture here.
You need to be a learner
You need to be a follower
You must be a “go” person; for that is what Jesus did, He went, He taught and had the disciples go. They went and taught others to go and make disciples in all the world.
Marks of a disciple
One who abides in God’s word (Jn8:31; Mt7:21-27; Jm1:21-27)
John 8:31 NASB95
31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
In Mt7:21-27 turn and summarize.
Turn to and ask everyone to turn to Jm1:21-25.
One who loves the brethren (Jn13:34-35)
Turn to and read
Jn13:34-35 “34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.””
One who bears fruit (Jn15:8; Mt5:16; look out Jn15:1-2)
The Father is gloried when the disciples were to bear much fruit (Jn15:8) and you are proof of the fruit.
Let your light shine (Mt5:16) and people will see it and glorify your father in heaven
To bear fruit, abide love, stay attached (Jn15:1-2) and you will have the marks of a disciple.
Cost of being a disciple
Cost of being a disciple picture inserted here
There is a cost for everything.
Do you think there is a cost for being a disciple of Jesus Christ? If so, what might a cost be?
The cost must be putting Jesus first (Lk14:6; Mt10:34-37; Lk9:23-25)
The cost must be willing to suffer for Christ (Lk14:27; 2Tim3:12)
So, a disciple must be willing to expend time and effort into being a disciple, sometimes at great personal cost by
The paying the cost of forsaking all to follow Christ
It was not Jesus intentions to attract large crowds, to fill stadiums, large venues, but to make disciples. To teach people how to get to His Fathers house where there are many rooms prepared for those who believe and bear much fruit.
Benefits of being a disciple picture inserted here
Jobs have benefits (or at least they used to, beyond pay)
Marriages have benefits
Being a disciple of Jesus has benefits, what benefits or rewards do you think come as a disciple, a follower of Jesus?
Saved from the wrath to come (Rom5:9)
(turn to and read) rom5:9 “9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.”
Anticipation of complete freedom of sorrow, pain and death (Rev21:1-8)
Today we have Jesus peace to calm the troubled heart (Jn14:27)
turn to and read Jn14:27 “27 “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be
fearful.”
Today we have His word that can have His joy so our joy may be made full (Jn15:11)
What other blessings, rewards can you think of either future or present tense that come from being a follower of Jesus?
Want more, than we need to continue to walk with Him, to draw closer to Him, and that starts with the beginning of a disciple.
Becoming a disciple picture inserted here
Remember
turn to and read again Mt28:19-20 “19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.””
You need to know it involves hearing (Rom10:17); belief (Jn3:16; Rom10:9); Confess (Rom10:10); and as our passage says baptism (Mt28:19) then the go (also Mt28:19) but you can’t go unless you know and you can’t go until you are His.
Baptism picture here
Briefly explain purpose of baptism, the starting place, the birth place of the Christian and death place of the sinner.
Baptism is act of submission
Baptism is act of obedience
Baptism is act of faith
Baptism is a place of birth
Baptism is place for the start of a new life in Christ.
So, want a closer walk with thee? that is what this series is all about, teaching, reminding the disciple of Jesus about a closer walk with Jesus. Let me put the verse up again
Matthew 28:19–20 NKJV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
First we learn
Then we apply
Then we go
Then we teach others
