Introduction

Greetings…
The lessons that come forth from the book of Ruth are numerous but as we have been studying, here on these 3rd Sundays, by focusing on a specific person in the bible, I want us to focus this afternoon on Boaz.
When it comes to Boaz and Ruth’s marriage we don’t have much information.
In fact we only have five verses on it, Ruth 4:13-17.
However, today I don’t want us to focus on Boaz as a husband but what made him worthy of being a husband.
Young men can learn so much from this man’s actions towards a young woman he eventually marries.
So with that in mind let’s examine our lesson for this afternoon.

A Worthy Man

He Was Honorable.

The first time we read of Boaz we prepared for the kind of man he will show himself to be.
Ruth 2:1 (ESV)
1 Now Naomi had a relative of her husband’s, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
Before we read of Ruth ever meeting her future husband we are told that Boaz is a “worthy man.”
As we read about him it becomes clear he is a man worthy of trust and respect because he acts honorably in each circumstance.
A young man seeking a wife should seek to be a worthy man when people see him and when they don’t.

Summary

A young man seeking a wife should seek to be a worthy man when people see him and when people don’t.
Being found worthy “in public only” is not being “a worthy man.”
We also learn Boaz was…

A Protecting & Providing Man

He Was A Bulwark.

The worthiness of Boaz begins with who we see him care for this young, vulnerable widow who is far from home and not a born Jew.
Ruth 2:8–9 ESV
8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now, listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women. 9 Let your eyes be on the field that they are reaping, and go after them. Have I not charged the young men not to touch you? And when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn.”
Having just met her he took immediate responsibility for her well-being.
He made sure nothing on his watch would happen to her or the other young women working his fields.
Again he didn’t do this “after something happened” he was proactive in making sure nothing happened to Ruth in his fields.
He not only protected her but…

He Was A Server.

By that I mean he provided/served her needs.
As he told her, “do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to ‘my young women’ … and when you are thirsty, go to the vessels and drink what the young men have drawn.”
Boaz saw a young widowed woman in need and provided for her.
He did not ignore her needs, assume someone else would provide for her, or make excuses about not having enough for himself.
He gladly served and provided for her.

Summary

A man worthy of marrying is a man who is vigilant enough to protect & provide for “all women” in need of such and see it as his responsibility to do so, again, for all women in such a situation.
Not just those that “might” bring him later benefits such as being a girlfriend or wife someday.
We also find Boaz was…

A Kind Man

He Was Strongly Gentle.

The protection and service Boaz provided for Ruth demonstrated the gentleness and kindness he had in him.
A real man is one that not only provides protection but does so with a strong gentleness.
Naomi, upon hearing how Boaz treated Ruth, stated…
Ruth 2:20 ESV
20 And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the Lord, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” Naomi also said to her, “The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers.”
This time is not much different than today, but for different reasons.
Today, kindness in men has been neutered to only mean soft and pathetic, unable to do anything but be emotional.
Real men are strong but gentle.
As Paul put it in 2 Timothy 2:24, the Lord’s servants are kind.
2 Timothy 2:24 (ESV)
24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil
Kind is what men of God are.
Ephesians 2:7 ESV
7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Summary

A young man wanting to find a good wife (Proverbs 12:4) must not only be one that provides and protects but is kind while doing so.

Conclusion

Obviously, when a couple marries there will be growing pains and if the man is like Boaz and the woman like Ruth their marriage will get better with each passing day.
As one man put it when talking about marriage, “an oak tree starts out as an acorn.”
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
