Feasting

V 29-30
at the house of Levi after Levi became a disciple of Jesus
Having a great party with tax collectors and sinners
the scribes and Pharisees started to grumble
Jesus was associating with the dregs of society
not following the rules of a good Jew
not following the rules set down by the Pharisees
the scheduled fast days are on Monday and Thursday
this might be one of theses days
the fast is a rule laid down by the Pharisees
as part of their worship system
a very elaborate / put on a show of how pious you are
Jesus and His disciples are feasting / having fun
Having fun is not allowed either one must be stoic at all times
have you heard the phrase “cleanliness is next to Godliness”
John Wesley was the first to speak the phrase
it dates back to Leviticus and the cleansing ritual
the clean and unclean animals to eat
the pharisees have taken the law of God and added immensely to it. and with that they have created a worship system from it
so now in order to be self righteous before God they have to fast, be clean, be stoic, and be miserable
and they are upset at the disciples of Jesus because they are feasting and having fun
read V 33-39

The Wedding Feast

V 33-34
Jesus said to them… the same as before V 31, V 22
V 32 Jesus said to them that He was not there to call the self righteous to be His disciples
now He is going to tell them their self righteous acts of worship in totally incompatible with the New covenant
the wedding feast there is a rule that there is to be no sad faces
7 days of Joy and feasting
it is the most wonderful time of a life dancing music and celebration
so this is the analogy that Jesus uses to describe being with Jesus
remember the wedding at Cana? water into wine
our life now is the beginning of the feast every one is joyful and happy
our life in Heaven is the second half when Jesus produced the best wine
Jesus is the bridegroom that the world has been waiting for
Rejoice people are being saved
Rejoice people are being healed
Rejoice the sinners are being forgiven
Rejoice lives are being changed
yet you are upset because you think being Godly is to be always sad, gloomy, fasting all the time
no this time is for celebrating
Matthew 13:44 LSB
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
Matthew 13:45–46 LSB
“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking fine pearls, and upon finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.
Having Jesus is like having that pearl of great price
he will bring us to the great city with the gates made of pearl
if you are a christian today and you are gloomy and sad
then you are not remembering your bridegroom
you are not preparing yourself for His return to come and get you
It’s just like his great love

Edna Randolph Worrel

1 A friend I have called Jesus, Whose love is strong and true, And never fails howe’er ’tis tried, No matter what I do; I sinned against this love of His, But when I knelt to pray, Confessing all my guilt to Him, The sin-clouds rolled away.
Refrain: It’s just like Jesus to roll the clouds away, It’s just like Jesus to keep me day by day, It’s just like Jesus all along the way, It’s just like His great love.
3 When sorrow’s clouds o’ertake me, And break upon my head, When life seems worse than useless, And I were better dead; I take my grief to Jesus then, Nor do I go in vain, For heav’nly hope He gives that cheers Like sunshine after rain. (Refrain)
4 Oh, I could sing forever Of Jesus’ love divine, Of all His care and tenderness For this poor life of mine; His love is in and over all, And wind and waves obey When Jesus whispers, “Peace, be still!” And rolls the clouds away. (Refrain)

A Parable Of Incompatibility

V 36
Jesus is comparing Christianity to The religion of the day
Judaism / What the Pharisees are promoting
following all of the rules
fasting 2ce a week
being miserable and calling it Godly
7th day Adventists have to obey all the rules to eligible to go to heaven
they try to mix the gospel with deeds
no one tears a patch out of a new shirt to patch up a old shirt
the new and the old is incompatible
there is no mixing
Jesus is the way the truth the life
not Jesus and works
not Jesus and sacrifices
not Jesus and legalism
we are saved by grace
we live by grace
we live by faith
we obey out of love
If we want to make a rule to help us remember that is fine
the church should not make the rule
if we want to sing the old hymns as part of worship
don’t require all churches to do the same
V 37-38
another analogy of Jesus to demonstrate that He is bringing a brand new way
the way is paved with the precious blood of Jesus
the way that Jesus said it is finished, the work is done
we don’t have to work for our salvation, but only repent and believe
we don’t have to stay right with God
God keeps us right with Him
so don’t try to mix the Gospel with anything to try to please God
BUT
V 39
people are set in their ways
they are more comfortable being miserable
it’s a familiar place to be
I’ll take my chances with pleasing God my way
a religion that one is Joyful just does not sound right to me
it is time to turn from the old ways to Jesus
allow Jesus to forgive your sins and give you a new life
Jesus came to die on the cross to appease the wrath of God
to satisfy the Justice that we deserve
Jesus did this by taking our sin upon himself
and if we put our faith in Him and the finished work on the cross then we will be saved
Christian
are you still trying to please God with your works
with you daily scripture reading
tithing
ministry
with your doing of good works to please God
what ever it is
these things should be done out of love not duty
allow God to lead in the good works
and the trials and pain of this world will be totally forgotten with the glory that awaits us
Philippians 4:4 LSB
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
Life with Jesus is a celebration not a pity party
yes there will be suffering, pain, and hardship
but we live with the hope that is in us
so lets celebrate Jesus
