The message of the cross is the good news of salvation, and the story of the cross is the story of God’s love for sinners.
The most amazing truth is that God loves sinners and Christ died for the ungodly.
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 3:1 ESV
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
These three words (crucified, dead, and buried) tell the story of the cross in its power and in its brutal force.
The Three central truths confirmed here affirm the fact that Jesus was crucified on a cross by the act of scornful men, that he truly died, and that after His death He was buried. All of this in perfect fulfillment of the plan of God.
Acts 2:22–23 ESV
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
This text underlines that the cross was not something that surprised God or merely happened to Jesus. It was Gods plan.
John 1:29 ESV
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
The lamb, spotless and with out blemish was the best-known symbol of the entire system of blood sacrifice.
This is why Christians loo to Jesus on the cross as a victor not as a victim.
He came for this purpose, and he fulfilled this redeeming purpose-completely.

The Enemies of The Cross

The modern enemies of the cross of Christ have their roots in the times of the apostles.
The message if the cross offends prideful and darkened minds.

The Repugnance of Sacrifice

No salvation with no sacrifice.
Such beliefs also reveal a horrible misunderstanding of the holiness of God and the reality of sin.
If you can imagine the holiness of God and rob him of this most important attribute, you can also redefine sin as something less than an infinite violation of Gods holiness.
Hebrews 9:22 ESV
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
The Bibles understanding of the seriousness of sin and the holiness of God go hand in hand.
The Bible answers this objection in two ways:
It reveals the glory of God in His holiness.
Leviticus 22:32 ESV
32 And you shall not profane my holy name, that I may be sanctified among the people of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you,
1 Samuel 2:2 ESV
2 “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.
Psalm 47:8 ESV
8 God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.
Isaiah 6:3 ESV
3 And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
1 Peter 1:16 ESV
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
The Bible corrects these retractors by showing the seriousness of sin and its consequences:
Psalm 37:38 ESV
38 But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed; the future of the wicked shall be cut off.
Isaiah 13:11 ESV
11 I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
Isaiah 26:21 ESV
21 For behold, the Lord is coming out from his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and the earth will disclose the blood shed on it, and will no more cover its slain.
Romans 2:12 ESV
12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The holiness of God bubbles over into His wrath against sin.
God must punish sin; for nothing in all the cosmos equates to greater evil than the sinfulness of mankind.
To Deny, therefore, the need of a sacrifice amounts to nothing less than a denial of the gospel.

God the Cosmic Child Abuser

This position insulates the crucifixion narrative from the rest of biblical revelation.
The Bible often describes the love that exists between the Son and the Father.
Matthew 3:17 ESV
17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus made clear that he hung on the cross not by abandonment but by His own will and desire.
The Bible does not speak of a father abandoning a child to the cross. It describes, rather, a son who willingly gave up His life for His people.

The Cross-Only a Moral Lesson

The Scriptures clearly detail that when God created the world, He purposed His son to redeem sinners by the shedding of His blood. (Eph 1:3-10)
Ephesians 1:3–10 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
This false gospel upholds Jesus’ love on the cross as an ethic for all to imitate rather than an event necessary for salvation.
This theology assumes a lack of a sin problem in the creation.
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
He credited our sin to Christ and gave us His righteousness through faith.
This is true love. This is scandalous love.
This is Glorious love that calls us to worship.
Though denied by some, the atoning work on the cross reveals the fullness of God’s nature and character.
God revealed in Jesus sacrifice the overwhelming intersection of His divine love and justice.
In The sacrifice of Jesus, God the Father revealed both His justice in requiring a sacrifice for sin and His role as the justifier by providing the sacrifice in Christ.
To deny substitutionary atonement, one denies the nature of God and the only hope of salvation for mankind.
Furthermore, to deny the atoning work of Christ nullifies Christs mission on earth.

The Cross: The symbol of Our Faith

Jesus’ cross represents a powerful symbol for the faith because of its centrality, scandalousness, and glory.

Centrality

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
The apostles, therefore, erected the cross as a central pillar of truth in the earliest days of the chruch.

Scandalousness

The Cross, however as the alter of an eternal sacrifice for sin.
The cross of Christ ascends as a monolith of salvation where Gods love and justice meet together in beautiful, scandalous power.
Though a stumbling block to some and foolishness to others the power of God for salvation flows from the crimson tide of Christs blood on calvary’s cross.

Glory

The cross enshrines the true glory of every believer in Jesus Christ.
The Cross stands not as a tool of execution but as a monument of glory.
Jesus on the cross contains a magnificent and indescribable glory that overshadows every earthly ambition and hope.
The cross is our glory.
With all this in mind, the words of the creed “crucified, dead, and buried” serve as essential pillars of the Christian truth and point to the centrality of the cross as the symbol of the Christian faith.
